I understand that the majority of you members here are in winter, but here down under we're smack bang in the middle of summer and it's only going to get hotter.

Today it reached 35c (95f) towards feb/march it will get to 45+ degrees c (113+f).

Do you have any tips on how I can keep my girl cool?
I make chicken broth ice cubes and let her munch on them, she's 90% inside, only going out for bathroom breaks and when it's cool enough to go for a run and play with the boys.
The A/C is cranked but it still so hot even inside, we're an unofficial nudist colony at the present. I feel bad for Freya, she cant electivly remove her coat.
I put ice cubes in her water. And give her frozen raw bones to chomp on. I spray her with a mister (a bottle with trigger action) and I wipe her face and paws with a cool flannel.

I dont know if there is more I can be doing.

A cheap Kidding pool might help if you can pick one up if your boys don't have one already you are willing to let them share.

Apart from that you are doing everything right. Keep the outdoor time at a minimum and make sure She has plenty of water

Sounds like you are doing everything good right now..

One of my pups likes to sunbathe in the summer he thinks he needs about 3 to 4 sessions out side during the heat of the summer laying in the sun.

I had thought about the clam shell pawing pool things, but was in 2 minds about it. She's not a fan of being drenched - she fell in hte bath wsith the boys once and it kinda scared her, and when ever she's outside with the boys playing under the sprinclers or with the hose she avoides it like the plague. Also my back yard is just all black sand, no grass grows in summertime, she'd get absolutelly filthy, in turn making my house black.
I've got a paved courtard that connects to the backyard, I could put it in there, but I was just wiondering if putting the plastic shells on a paved surface would make the water get hot too quickly?

If she will actually use it dropping it on a paved surface should be fine. Most dogs I've had tend to just dig in them until the water flies everywhere anyway after an hour or two prompting a refill later on. (Destroying the pool after a couple of months so if your sons still use it you might not want to allow them to share if she does dig in it )

It is just something containing water that gives her the opportunity to refresh herself from time to time. It won't need to be cold really... Like on a really hot day when you just dip your feet in water and feel better.

Obviously if it could be shaded from the sun somehow that would be ideal, but just having the ability to jump in and out fast can help some pups.



That is just if you really want to use the pool though. If it just isn't practical (Water restrictions, Dirty, or avoids water) you're doing everything fine right now. Just keep an eye on her and it should be good.

It sounds like you're doing everything just right. Down here it gets to be well over a hundred and constant 80-90's most of the year and my husky has always done just fine. From my experience they like to sleep on tile or brick floors, some surface that is usually cool, so if you can provide that it could add to her comfort. And make sure she has access to all the water she needs.

Thanks, I'll look into the pool and try it out. I'll give her the benifit of the doubt.
