| My husky is seven months old and will be almost a year when summer comes. Here in alabama it gets hot very soon, like around April. My husky is an indoor dog but when taking her outside for walks and play how do I keep her cool and comfortable? |

| Ghost did just fine when we were living in the Florida panhandle. We would avoid heavy exercise during the heat of the day, and we also had a kiddie pool in our backyard. Just whatever you do, don't let anyone talk you into shaving her! That's an unfortunately popular practice down there with northern breeds. It'll ruin her coat and take away her heat, sun, and parasite protection. _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | Oh gosh...I'm from Las Vegas...I'm sure you have to worry about humidity which is a bit different though...
I personally believe they do fine. My GSD doesn't have a double coat (to absorb the heat) and she does worse than my husky when it comes to the heat. I used to walk them in the evenings sometimes (105+ for an hour walk) and they'd be fine. I carried water with me, remained in the shade...actually I used to walk through a dual purpose park/detention basin. Detention basins are depressed into the ground so the temperature was actually a bit cooler there and it was completely grass and tree lined....
Things to be careful of though: hot sidewalks of course having enough water acclimating them slowly to the temperature (so before I took them for a walk I'd let them lounge around outside) do not EVER wet a dog down in an attempt to keep them cool because it doesn't really work; it's like lugging around a wet towel which sort of actually holds the heat in...I mean it's fine to wet them down during play or cooling off but not before a walk or something... |

| I live in Mississippi right now, in my second year here. I have had no problems keeping my girls cool. Just make sure you keep them brushed out really well with an undercoat rake. Keeps the thick undercoat out during the summer but retains the long guard coat that protects them from the sun. Most of the time my girls are inside but we do like to be outside a lot. Biggest help? WATER. Make sure you have lots of it. My girls both LOVE digging in their water bowls. In fact, I just posted a pic in Journey's album of her doing just that earlier today. |

| haha, nice. My parents live in Seven hills. Used to run the loop, and then cut through that big park. Autumn Wind Way is the name of their street I think. Great looking pups. I am born and raised in Seattle though. Parents couldnt handle the Cold and rain so, they left me for warmer weather. |

I hate to hijack this thread...:c My parents are still in that area as well...I visit often. Love Red Rock (have you been?) and all the outdoorsy stuff that people don't believe Las Vegas has to offer. Do your parents have dogs? Just curious...C: I will move back hopefully to that area at some point in my life...I love it there. I've heard Seattle is rainy (duh!)...lol. |

| Hey guys, just a reminder, the "good advice" button is not like the "like" button on Facebook. _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | They have like 2 lhasa apso and a cocker spaniel. I have definitately hiked through red rock, and Mt. Charleston. The only thing I didn't like about hiking down there was waking up Super early to beat the mid day heat. But the hikes are fun, going to Lake Mead is fun as well if you have boat access. |
