| Really sorry to hear about your loss, even when they aren't the best of friends (thinking about my female with a food problem) I think we find it hard to deal with their loss.
Now on to the challenge. I have two 13+ year old huskies (one Siberian, one Alaskan) and recently added a third dog, a NON-husky. She's interesting in that her DNA is all over the place (see Belle's DNA) (( 'scuse me, just got barked at, I'm 15 minutes past supper time ))
My way is to give them time to 'talk' ( a walk outside ) and see how they're going to get along for that time. If they don't try to eat each other then I give them time in a common area to 'play' (hopefully). If all goes well then I bring the other animal into the 'pack' (is two a pack?)
You said specifically that this is a puppy and you should have a lot less problem than I did. Most dogs respect something called 'puppy license' (google it) - think of it in terms of how we adults react when a 1 year old human child just dumps supper on the floor. If the adult dog is even basically 'social' then you can probably dump the puppy in the middle of the living room and watch an adult do "okay, what the blazes is this!?!" but you don't want to 'abandon' your dog to play with the puppy, even a good puppy license won't take sway over jealousy.

| I did not find that to be the case when tucker came over for a week. But a 10 month border collie is not in the small puppy group.
But in all seriousness, we tried to get a puppy a few years ago and while shadow was not out right agressive, we did notice some disturbing behavior. It was enough that im not comfortable bringing a puppy into the house with him. Maybe he has ptsd from the many years ago when spider took on 9 4 week old orphan pitbull mix puppies and ended up with 14 dogs in the house for about 6 weeks.
Spider and tucker got along great up until spider nipped him on the muzzle. And it did leave a nice little gash that bled. Kids freaked out 15 seconds later tucker was licking spider under the muzzle in a submissive posture but we did keep them separated the rest of the time he was here. That was a very fixable issue of spider resource guarding jerry and while she was peacefully sleeping next to jerry on the floor, tucker jumped on the couch on jerrys opposite side and layed on him. That might crop up, but one thing that seems to help is to have an area where the older dog can get away from the younger dog and also to dedicate specific separate time and space for each dog. |

| ... and I didn't say and probably should have, puppy license expires at about 3-4 months (sometimes as early as two months!)

| I can't say it's getting better but one day at a time... Kramer is jealous no matter what and can't say he is interested in all the smooches he gets from her and the way she looks at his enormous tail waiting for her chance to bite it would make anyone nervous. She just loves him watches everything he does closely. I can't wait for this biting phase to be over I forgot how sharp those teeth are? I put a bell on back door for potty training and she got that right away... Still so much more to learn... Best advice for the biting would help right now...my wife's arms and my hands would greatly appreciate it... |

| Regrettably I relate, Belle - who's about 2 years old - will play with Sky until Sky says "no" and then she quits. For some reason she seems to love to antagonize Avalanche - let's grab a hind leg; no, let's get that tail; if I go under his belly I can get that front paw ... and Avalanche puts up with for a while but when he's had enough he let's Belle know that "enough is enough, stop!"
I won't recommend this since it borders on being abusive ... but it's what I resort to when my hands are all scratches. I you're quick enough when the little monster try's to bite, grab her muzzle - the upper part - and carefully, gently squeeze and hold. You're not trying to hurt her, you're just trying to teach her that there are ramifications ... and she will learn. The reason that it's discouraged, of course, is that it's too easy to turn into something that really hurts and / or since you're dealing with his nose, you can damage the airways <??? I've been told> _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |
