I recently adopted a 7 month old female husky. I've been meaning come on here and do an introductory post, but things have been expectedly crazy. She's 7 months old and weighs 37 lbs. She appears to be very thin and almost everyone that sees her comments on it. I know some huskies can be thinner than others, but I feel that she needs to gain a little weight.

I adopted her in Alabama (I live in Georgia) from the humane society and had to take her to a vet over there. Not knowing any vets over there I took her to one closest to where I was staying. The vet suggested feeding her some ridiculous amount of food like 5 cups of food a day. I know that's too much, but how much do you all think she should be eating? I'm taking her to my usually vet on Friday, but I wanted to get opinions before then. Don't want her going hungry!

In my opinion, if you feel as though she is underweight then feed her the recommended amount that is on her food. Huskies typically don't eat as much as the recommended value and if you think that she is still not getting enough then up the amount. My husky is 43 pounds at almost 8 months so I really don't think your too far off! She may just need to fill out more Remember if your overfeeding she may get diarrhea which really isn't helpful or pleasant to clean up after! On the other hand, see what your vet tells you! They are the professional and can probably help you alot more than I can, I'm just speaking from experience. Huskies are typically a smaller breed and females usually only average to around 50 lbs.

Huskies in general are a lean breed. You should easily be able to feel her ribs, but not see it through her coat. She should have a nice taper at the waist, but you shouldn't be able to see her hips through her fur. And she should also have a natural 'abdomen tuck' from side view.

With her being a pup she will need more food since she is growing, 37 pounds at 7 months sounds pretty good to me though.

I have to agree with the above responses. She does sound normal to me and be mindful that even vets may not remember what each breed should be and may tell you that you need to feed more than you really should. How much and what are you feeding currently? At her age I think 2 - 2.5 cups of a good quality kibble would be sufficient for the average pup. Maybe 2.5 to 3 cups if she's going through a growth spurt, has a high metabolism, or is more active than the average pup her age.

FWIW, many of us have gone through the "skinny" stage with our dogs when they were younger and it has nothing to do with under feeding or being underweight, and it's totally NORMAL for this breed. I adopted my sibe from the shelter when he was 2 yrs old and he was a skinny little thing. He was a healthy weight for his age and breed, however he elicited comments from so many about how skinny he was. He finally filled in by the age of 3, which is also common for the breed to continue filling in till about 2 - 3 yrs of age.

I feel like it's a normal weight, I just can't get over how skinny she looks. I can definitely see some of her ribs through her coat which is why it worries me. Her coat is rather thin through her middle though.

I'll continue feeding her what I was, unless my vet thinks differently. Thanks everyone!

What food are you feeding? On a good quality kibble that amount should be sufficient, however you should not be able to see her ribs. On a lower quality food you would want to feed more. When do you see her vet? I would definitely get the vets opinion.

I just made the transition to Nature's Domain from the Science Diet she was supposedly eating before.

She's scheduled to go to the vet Friday, I think that's probably soon enough?

3 cups of Nature's Domain should be enough for the average dog. Yes, Friday is soon enough, it's not an emergency.

I agree with Val. Kody was SUPER skinny up until recently that he started filling out. He's going to be 2 years old on Saturday. Everybody commented on how skinny he was and my parents were constantly telling me that I was starving him. He ate 2.5 cups of food a day!

Now, we're going through the e"skinny" stage with Asia. She's a small husky. Weights 27lbs, but she's little. She was "chunky" when we got her from the shelter at 5months old. I was starting to get concerned that she had gotten too skinny so i upped her food intake by 1/2 cup. She's now getting 1 1/2 cups a day. She's about 10months.
