PostSubject: RANT - irresponsible owner   RANT - irresponsible owner EmptyThu Jul 26, 2012 10:02 pm

A former student of mine posted on facebook several months ago that she was getting a husky puppy. I commented and gave her the whole speech about knowing the breed and what a great but time consuming companion they are, and about needing a fenced in yard and time to give him plenty of exercise. She went ahead and bought him. Her boyfriend, whom she lives with, got a job in Columbus OH and they are moving there in September. So she posts on facebook tonight that since she is moving she has to sell him and wants $650.00 for him. It just makes me angry because I can't stand owners who don't consider that a dog is a forever pet. They get a dog now and when anything changes in their lives they toss them aside. /RANT

ETA: I asked her why she couldn't take him with her and this is what she said

Quote :
We can't take him with us because we are gonna be living in a townhouse and we are aloud to have pets but he will be very confined and he won't have no place to run and play and we have to keep him inside. He is still in his puppy stage and we would rather him no tare up or townhouse. Most of them have carpet and he isn't potty trained and we will be working a lot and not have much time for him. We want him to have a loving family that will have time for him and a place where he can play and run around. I feel its not fair to him to have to be confined in a townhouse and always having to be on a leash everywhere he goes.

Yeah, cause a nice house is so much more important than the animal you took in and made part of your family. Not to mention that a Husky should be on a leash everywhere he goes. Ugh.

Yeah...I was her senior English teacher, but in my defense, by Senior year she was too far gone to help much in the writing department. lol

Both the sentiment and the grammar would piss me off to no end too, as a retired HS English teacher and human with a husky.

It sounds like she's trying to make back her money.
Do you have any idea how long she's had the dog?

Perhaps returning it to the breeder or surrendering it to a husky rescue would be a better option (?)

I'm certain that she's just trying to make her money back so I don't think she'd surrender him to a rescue or return him to the breeder. I don't think she really cared about him at all to begin with, just wanted something cute as an accessory. :/ She has had him since May, and I think he was born in March.

He's an adorable little pup

What makes it worse is that this isn't the first Husky she has had. When I went to swipe his picture, I saw in her photos that she had this female pup named Kaylee in 2009.

She doesn't have her anymore, so I'm thinking something similar went down with Kaylee.

This girl should not be allowed to ever own a dog again.

I can see why you would be angry... how frustrating.

What annoys me a little bit as well is that i am wondering why did the breeder let her buy the pup in the first place? she doesn't sound very responsible, especially if the pup is a few months old already and she hasn't started on "potty" training, and her main concern it seems is the house and her carpets of the new place.

I agree this pisses me off to.
All I see here are piss poor excuses because they can't step up to the extra responsibility a puppy brings to their lives.

Wow. I'm irritated as well. She just disposes them! My pup is 13 weeks and is about 95% potty trained! She goes days without peeing in the house. It sounds like she is irresponsible.

The grammar bothers me too.

If she buys another husky in OH, I bet you're going to be even more livid. Ugh!

The poor thing, I really hope that it finds a home that will be able to take the care it needs. and that this girl NEVER gets a dog again.

I told my boss when we were getting Tika that we were going to have a husky. His response was oh wait they'll destroy everything. I had one once and it chewed up the baseboards, the table legs and my couch.
I asked if he exercised it , he said "well it went in the backyard etc. one day I came home from working a double shift (14 hours) and my couch was torn to shreds, thats when I gave up and sent him packing". RANT - irresponsible owner 85993
I hate people who blame their dogs for things that they can prevent. He recently bought himself a new puppy from the neighbours, a labxrottiexwolfhound mix. I asked him why he thought that THIS would be any different. He just shrugs. Idiocy. he constantly comes and asks me for advice on what to do or how to train her. I tell him and then he ignores my advice.
I really really really cannot stand ignorance in this respect. I am just waiting for the day that he comes in and tells me he HAD to give her up because of whatever reason. Then I really might not be able to keep my mouth shut.

On a hijack (sorry, I NEVER do this) I hate our provincial animal protection laws. We had a really highly publicised case of a pitbull "attack" that was sent straight to be euthanised without the courts looking at the police file and understanding what did and more importantly did not happen. Our town/province/country has terrible laws that protect puppy mills, and do very little for animal abuse. I have signed every petition that I see on increasing penalties for abuse and to review cases of supposed attacks, as well as the ones to lift pitbull bans. I absolutely am heartbroken over the state that we are in where this is acceptable and in practice every day.
Sorry, needed that off my chest.

I really commend those who can and do take in the dogs that need these homes, its not an easy thing to do, and so many of you go so out of your way to help them. Its really refreshing and it makes me think better of people. I really hope that this pup gets the home it deserves.

This is horrible, we had a hard time finding a place that would allow Luna when we moved to another state but we vowed we would live in a cardboard box with her if we had to. She is just as much our family as a child would be!

Welcome to the world of Back Yard Breeding.

It definitely does not restore my faith in humanity when so many people in the world who look at animals and just see dollar signs and money bags. I couldn't imagine giving any of my animals away, i couldn't even put a price on my animals. There is something really wrong with people. Although, i think the pup will be in much better hands with a person who loves it & cares for it, and is willing to train it. It sounds like it will be better off out of her hands away, not that i am condoning her behaviour at all, it is extremely irresponsible.
