PostSubject: Concerned Parent   Concerned Parent EmptyTue Jul 10, 2012 10:27 am

It's been about 2 days and change now and Thane has been acting very odd and this has me very concerned. I'll try to layout as much info as I can to paint an accurate picture of what is going on.

Typically our schedule is:
I wake up at 6:00am, Thane does his business and then we play for 20-30 and then we eat breakfast.
He goes in his crate, I'll usually provide him with a kong and I go to work.
My sister or dad will then walk him in the afternoon and train him and then feed him lunch.
I come back home at 6:00pm he does his business and we go for a walk and we train
I make dinner, we eat, we hangout in my room and we'll play or just relax.
Then it's bed time so he goes in his crate at 9:00pm.

He is usually a happy puppy, energetic, with no complaints.
I feed him 3 cups of Orijen puppy food(a cup a meal), he eats it all no problem and provides a solid big stool when he goes to the bathroom.
He's been on Orijen for about a month now.

What has been going on:
He doesn't really want to play with his toys and it looks like effort for him to wrestle the cat but he does it anyways cause the cat will meow at him all day.
His poop is runny
He howls, barks, and whines when in his crate now and will hide behind me and resist's going in which has never been a problem
We'll hangout in my room and all he'll do is bark and whine, I'll sit on the floor to comfort him and he just plops down on my lap and will whine the odd time
This one isn't to serious but he's been scratching himself a little bit more then usually , don't think he has fleas or ticks and we have already started flea protection stuff about a month ago with the vet so I'm not to worried.

Maybe I'm just being a little to worried but this is really bugging me cause he's not in sync with his normal self.
I have a vet appointment for shots next week Friday but I'm not sure if I should get it bumped up to this week or if I should wait it out and see if he'sll bounce back.
Anyone have any advice on the matter?

This one kind of has me stumped because I haven't really had this problem. Hopefully some others will chime in with help also.

My only concern is that maybe he is getting into the cat food somehow. Cat food contains alot of ash (all brands even the top of the line stuff) which is really bad for dogs (can cause kidney stones) and for Saphire makes her act really strange like what you have described (especially the runny stools). Thats the only thing I can think of. Hope it helps.

How old is he? If he's still a young puppy, I would bump up the vet appointment just to be safe.

Hi!
What brand of flea and tick do you use?

He's 4 months next week Friday.
I don't have the box with me for the flea and tick but the vet swears by it. I'll make sure to post it as soon as I get home.

Just askin beacause hopefully.. it'snot the one my pup was on(we r changin this month) it's making a lot of dogs sick. Vectra3d.. alot of dogs have similar reaction to your pup..probably something else though.. nothing serious I hope! I hope your baby gets better, quickly.. He is very cute!

Just googled Vectra3d image and no it's not that brand. I'm hoping its just a bug or something very minor. It puts me into super worried mode and on high alert when I see him in this state.

Yea.. any little change in my pup and I'm freakin too.. he is my first dog.. I hope it's nothing.. I read on another post that the puppy food you use is very high in protein and someone else's puppy got runny stool. But we can only guess.. My vet treated my pup for kennel cough.. he didn't really get better.. then she says maybe just allergies...

Orijen is a really rich food if I'm not mistaken. Could you possibly be overfeeding? I know he eats it all, but not all dogs, especially puppies can regulate themselves very well. It's possible he's getting too much of a good thing.

Yes, I read this post also but not sure why it would start messing with him now. Anyhow I cut back his breakfast to 1/2 a cup, my dad is gonna feed him lunch at 1/2 a cup then I'll supply him with 1cup for dinner. hopefully cutting a cup out will provide better results.

Got home an Thane is doing much better, only problem no is he has diarrhea and it smells terrible. It's looking like the food may be the cause.

Have you considered vaccinosis?

Here is a list of symptoms.

http://www.thedogplace.org/VACCINES/Vaccinosis-1_Bloomer&Thomason.asp

It's a lot more common than you think, in fact Delilah was suffering from it for a while and we didn't even realize it until we switched to a holistic vet.

Interesting, its possible. Only thing that I've noted is the diarrhea maybe some anxiety when I'm gone.

The whining could be attributed as a symptom.

Scratching can also be a sign, as vaccinosis is usually an allergy to the vaccine. I have had bad run ins with conventional vets, but some people have had good ones. I suggest you find a holistic vet who can give you the proper diagnosis.

Yea I'll do some research and see if I can dig one up. Is there a way to test to see if it's vaccinosis?
Also is there a few things I can do to try and harden up his poop. I've started supplying him with more water so he doesn't dehydrate.

Yogurt or plain canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie stuff). These worked wonders for Saphire. Just add some to his food everytime you feed him.

You could also try a bland diet of either boiled chicken and green beans or eggs and carrots. It would also tell you if it's an allergy or not.

Hi there,

My puppy showed the same symptoms, lethargic, runny stools, and eventually vomiting. We were treating him for diarrhea, a bland diet of boiled rice and chicken, thinking it might be his food, then he pooped out a worm. We battled worms with him, despite having all his vaccinations and deworming shots until almost 6 months of age. At around 6 months all puppies naturally develop an immunity to worms, but let me tell you the battle getting there was full of challenges, and and off and on again sick puppy.

Canned pumpkin also seemed to do the trick for runny poop!

Hope Jordan is feeling better!

Managed to get a vet appointment today. Hopefully we get to the bottom of this and it's nothing super serious. I'm going to run to the store tonight and pick up some supplies to try a bland diet. At least he's back to hyper/kissy face mode so that's a good sign at least.
