| Yesterday I went to the dog park and there was another female dog there. Tobi mounted her. I tried to get him to stop as much as I could but he kept trying to go at it. After a few too many times, I took Tobi and Poppy home. There were "sorries" and "it's okay, dogs will be dogs", but the owner and I didn't really talk about it. I've never had this happen before, so I don't really know how to handle it
Poppy is spayed and when he does try to mount her she will definitely get angry at him, so he doesn't try to do it to her. Since he's almost hitting the 6-month mark, I think Im going to call the vet today to see if I can get him neutered before anything serious happens.
The thing that I'm worried about is ..I don't know if this female dog is spayed..or if she was in heat ..or if Tobi is mature enough to impregnate her...if she is spayed, what if he does it to a dog that isnt..I don't want to be responsible for breeding puppies..etc.
So is he mature enough to impregnate her? or am I just worrying too much? |

| Doesn't sound like they "tied." To impregnant the female the two would have "tied" up for a little bit (this is after the humping and the male will usually get off the female and they will turn around tail to tail. sorry didn't want to get into too much detail there! lol. hopefully you can understand what I'm trying to describe). Just humping won't do anything unless he actually penetrated her. I'm assuming his testicles have dropped by now and that's why he's humping! lol. Then yes he could breed even this young. I would say with his desire to hump, I would get him neutered as soon as possible and try to get after him whenever he humps. He needs to learn that that's not an okay thing to do, cause it will get annoying and if he does it to the wrong dog, they could trun around and hurt him. _________________ -Sara |

| Ah, okay, it's my first male dog so I don't really know much lol but I understand what you mean They weren't tied so that's a relief I'll try correcting this and hopefully get him neutered soon. Thank you! |

| lol. Good. Don't worry. I wouldn't know about it either if it wasn't for my mom who's been dealing with dogs her whole life and watched a breeding when I was young.
Talk with your vet and see when's the best time to neuter. He's just acting like a silly teenager right now! lol. But if you plan on going to dog parks a lot in the future, I would definitely try to curb his desire to hump. It could be hormonal and it could be showing dominance. Either way, it's usually looked at poorly at dog parks and you might get some owners giving you nasty looks. lol. I know I got mad at one 100 something pound dog for trying to hump my, at the time, only 30 pound sibe! It really wasn't fair to her and she couldn't get away! The owner just said they were playing and wouldn't even help to stop his dog. Needless to say heated words were exchanged and I left quickly after that.
Or sometimes I see the poor owner who truely wishes their dog wouldn't hump other dogs and ends up following around their dog the whole time pulling them off of other dogs! So sad, but funny at the same time. Yours is at a good age to nip the problem in the butt! If your park has time out sections, like a 6 x 6 fenced space for time out, it would be good to put him in there if he tries humping and if he keeps it up, just go home. Or if there's no time out place, just put him on a leash for time out. You don't really have to get mad at him, but he needs to learn that humping = no more fun. _________________ -Sara |

| RAndom question. If his 5 month old did get a female pregnant that young.... If the dog was older and impregnated the same do would the litter be any different. Like would there be more likely health issues or anythig else? |

| I don't think so, other than you can't check a dog that young for most health issues. Also I think it is more unlikely that the pregnancy would take. Young dogs are new at stuff like that and don't always get the job done. _________________ -Sara |

| I should add, if a 5 month old female got pregnant, then the puppies could have problems and develop poorly, because the mother is still a puppy herself! Plus being preganat that young can hurt the female's development too and she may have a sagging back the rest of her life. _________________ -Sara |
