| Does any one else have a household with other dogs and one husky is food aggressive? Kya does not bite other dogs but she will stop eating and keep her face in the bowl until the poms leave.
She doesn't however, have an issue with the cats eating out of the same bowl with her. It's weird. She will even stop eating, sit down, and wait for them to finish.
But with the poms, she is food "gaurding". She does nip at them though, if they come near her when she has a bone. We have never deprived her of food or treats, everyone has constant access to some kind of food (they all eat at different times, and different amounts) but she still acts like that.
Anyone else have this issue? Any advice on how to stop it?
PS. She will let me stick my hands in the bowl and not even think twice about continuing on, It's JUST the dogs. |

| Usually I try to keep the others away during that feeding. But guarding for the sake of guarding I will take the whole bowl away and forget about it until the next meal. It's still a warning signal that's being given off to the dogs. Also a signal in a chain of likely events. You don't know what might trigger the next response. The lighting in the room one day might light their eyes in a way that makes Kya think she needs to give a stronger signal. Like a snap. Or they might be one step too close on the wrong day. And with dogs that size, I would probably focus on training them to stay away while that one eats (and I keep the cats away because they get nasty smearing poos when they eat dog food).
If they were 30 pound or larger dogs I would have different ways of dealing with it. |

| When we got Thor he tried with our GSD I immediately took his food away and said no really loud. We waited about 5 minutes before we gave the food back. That seemed to work the first time for us. |

| There are a couple of methods I recommend for guarding. One is giving her too much to possibly guard. At meal time, split each dog's meal up into several bowls (if there are 3 dogs, put the food among 5-6 bowls. Space them out somewhat evenly and then let them eat. Giving Kya too much to guard can desensitize her to the need to guard. Another thing you can do is practice switching. This is usually best done with two people and two dogs. Give one treat to both dogs and then switch treats, saying "switch". Each time Kya gets something new and better (always higher value to her) and the other dog gets what Kya had. The idea is that she learns that when you take something away and give it to the others, she is getting something better. Do this a few times each time you do it. Both of these things should help _________________ www.itsahuskything.com It's a husky thing... you wouldn't understand. |
