| Subject: food aggression... Tue Sep 13, 2011 5:21 pm | |
when we got our boy husky about a month ago, he was slightly food aggressive due to not being fed properly. He would growl at my girl husky, but was fine with me and my husband. Now, he has started growling at me and my girl, but not my husband. Im not sure why. For the past few weeks neither of them liked their food, so they didn't really eat it, this past week, we ended up getting to the bottom of the food barrel, which had their previous food in it, and he chowed down. I went to move him to put something in his bowl, and he growled at me. I popped him (b/c that is not gonna happen) and he growled again. I put him in his cage and got on to him. When I let him out, he went back to the food bowl and did it again when i tried to move him. So... im not sure what's going on. He was doing great until this past weekend. He is a sweet boy other than with his food bowl now. Any advice?

Try hand feeding him for a few months or longer, then put the food in his bowl but hold it while he eats. While hand feeding him don't pull the food away from him, bring it up so he can't reach it anymore. If you feel any teeth at all, say ouch, pull up the food, make him sit, and then let him eat again after you give him the command to. Even if your hand is lowered with food in it don't let him start eating until you give the command to eat. I did this the first 6 months with Kale, I have never had any food aggression with other dogs or my cats, I can stick my hands in his food and water bowls and he immediately stops eating and back away out of respect and doesn't start eating again until I tell him it is okay to.If I forget to give him his release command he will literally stare at me for 10 mins until I realize haha

I had a very similar issue with Mya. check out the thread below. She still does it, but is definitely better. I make her "sit and wait" before eating and pet her head while she's eating. She doesn't growl anymore...just sometimes bears teeth, BUT at least I can take her bowl away once she's done. I couldn't do that before. She would guard the empty bowl! My two always eat separate though.... https://www.itsahuskything.com/t1206-guarding-food

Thank you guys. He only seems to do it when i try to move him. I can pet him, they can eat together, i can stick my hand in the bowl, i can drag the bowl around, but if i try to move him, its on then. lol. Im hoping that this will all make it easier.

I would never physically move ANY dog while they are eating. That's just asking to get bit. I remove the food first, then move him.

I normally lean on him a little, not moving him completely from his food, their bowl is big enough that i can get them to move to one side of it, and they still have half the bowl to eat out of. I was doing that to transfer him to the other side to add the other food to it. I never drag them away or lift them up, just ask them to move to the other side of the bowl.

That's not asking, that's physically moving. If you want to add food to the bowl, lift it up, add to it, and put it back down. Nudging a dog away from food will illicit that reaction in any breed of dog, even my timid Dachshund. If you want them to do it without picking up the bowl, ask him to move on his own. It might take some training. I might start training Kale do that
