So Hayden has developed this new habit of digging his water bowl like the's outside digging a hole, but there's nothing there! He dig's it like crazy splashing water EVERYWHERE and then he'll lay in the water puddle and drink it off the floor. lol ... is my dog just crazy or are there other dogs that do this too?? Anyone know why they do this? My sister think's he's cooling off his belly, but it's still pretty cold out!

Siku did that a lot as a puppy, but never really grew out of it. I got after her for doing it at home, so she won't do it here. But she will do it at the dog park sometimes.

i see dogs at the park doing it a lot (mostly labs)! I posted a video of Hayden playing in his bowl knocking the water out, but now he's getting to the point where it's like full blown digging action! i've never had a dog do it before so i was just curious as to why they do this and if anyone knew Smile

Dakota does it all the time! Then he lays in the puddle. We have a towel under his bowl though so it doesn't get water all over the place. I think he just tries to cool himself off or play or something. It cracks me though haha

Bella did it a lot as a puppy but now she will only do it when she's thirsty but there is no water in the bowl. As she can make enough noise digging and dragging it across the lenoleum that I'll hear it in my room and will go fill it up.

Sabaka did this some but mostly just picked up his full bowl and carried it around spilling water everywhere! We bought one of those ugly, weighted, plastic water/food bowl where the water and food are connected. He evidently found it unenjoyable to dig in this and impossible to carry around. So he eventually stopped doing it and we were able to bring the metal bowls back.

I saw a water bowl at Petsmart that had a cover with a circle opening in the middle that was considered splash proof. It would also make it impossible to dig in if you wanted to fix the issue.

Mine used to do that all the time, I think they still do it especially in the summer. I'm pretty sure one or both of them still do since I've come home to water all over the kitchen...

Ava used to do that all the time as a puppy. She still does sometimes, but not too often and usually not at home. I bought her a water fountain and it seems to satisfy her need for splashing water lol

Of course, she also has a kiddie pool in our yard that she loves to splash and lay in whenever she gets the chance. She had to break the ice before she could lay in it a few days ago...
