Hello everyone. I am new here and decided to try to get advice from fellow husky owners who may have been through spaying their young pup.

My girl, Zydra, (7.5 months old) was spayed 4 days ago (09/19). It's been a challenge to keep her calm and not running or jumping. Each day gets harder! Last night I decided to give her a chewy toy to try to give her something to do, as she was clearly bored. It wound her up way to much, and I had to take it from her after a few minutes. She went bonkers with it! Yes, she chewed it like crazy, but also tried to play with it. Then she was super hyper afterwards for about 15 minutes, and very difficult to control.

This morning when I checked her incision it was a little weepy, but not bloody. I gently cleaned it with an all natural, fragrance free baby wipe (Seventh Generation brand). It isn't red or hot. There is a tiny spot on the end where it's coming apart ever so slightly. I am keeping an eye on it for now.

She has of course managed to run and jump several times since surgery. She gets bursts of energy, mainly when hungry. She's been pretty good, really. I'm just so paranoid of her not healing properly and having to go back under anesthesia to re-suture her incision, or just having prolonged healing time. I feel so badly for her with no exercise or playtime, so I just want her to be healed and back to puppy life.

So, the advice I'm looking for is how some of you have managed with restricted activity while healing. I clearly can't even give her something to chew because she gets way too excited.

The vet prescribe Trazodone and I gave her one today. It has helped a fair amount. We were mainly needing them for while we're at work, but I wanted to give her the first dose when I could watch her. I've been home with her since her surgery, but have to go back to work tomorrow. I'm hoping the medication will keep her relaxed enough all day to not cause damage to herself.

I'm keeping a close eye on that incision and so far it still looks the same. As long as it doesn't get worse, I think it'll heal fine.

Is she crated? The easiest way to keep jumping down is to crate when giving a chew so that she has to chew on it and not run around and throw it in the air a few times before chewing on it. I don't tend to be too up tight with my animals about activity after a spay. They usually do their own limiting for the first 3 days and then they get to feeling fine and want to go. Frankly, not giving pain meds helps keep them settled much of the time. If it hurts when they do it, they will stop doing it. lol. The main thing I pressure to control is jumping and rolling around in the dirt/grass. I resume walking, albeit shorter walks, as soon as the dog feels up to it. Anything that will strain the incision is a no-go, but most calm walking doesn't really bother anything. Weeping is normal. As long as it doesn't get inflamed or completely break open, you are fine.

While she is crate trained, it's been much harder since her spay. She goes nuts in it. While in there, she works hard to destroy her e-collar, which is a softer nylon version (not the hard plastic). She rolls and twists around the best she can, and it seems to make her energy levels skyrocket when we let her out. I haven't tried the chew in the crate, that is a good idea. However, I'm always concerned about toys/chews in crates where I might not notice something bad as easily as if she's in the middle of the floor.

She was only on pain meds for the first 3 days and hasn't had any today. You can tell when she does something that hurts, she'll react for a split second, but the keep doing it...ugh, lol!

Im getting spider spayed oct 15th and i worry about it alot, some of the things like when spider starts bouncing off the walls. We didn't limit squirt when she was spayed, she did a good job self limiting. My other worries have to do with wolfdogs and anaesthesia, and the not so uncommon problems squirt has from being spayed BUT the world does not need more wolfdogs as it is 70% are euthanized before they turn 3

I would not leave an ecollar on inside a crate. They have the ability to get hung between the bars sometimes and can do neck damage if the dog struggles trying to get it loose. Remove the ecollar before putting in crate and put it back on when she comes out. that will assist in protecting the collar and herself.
