Help! I have a 5 yr old male Husky, Ghost, which has been left loose in the house during the day with his lab mix female companion for 2 years.
He was destructive right after I moved to a new house 2 yrs ago, but was fine after I kept the blinds up so he could see out. I bought a house and moved again 3 mos ago. No problems. His 14 yr old companion passed away 3 wks ago and he is now destroying everything in sight trying to escape the house. He's been better for a week having a borrowed playmate over, but lost it again today and tried to dig through a window. I know it will take time and I am adopting him a buddy soon, but that also takes time. Any suggestions? He was crated before I got him at 5 mos, but I never have needed to. We walk in the morning before I leave and he has toys and Kings with treats. He is very subdued and sad, but getting a little better. Actually was excited to go walk this morning.

You may need to go back to crating. Even when you get him a buddy I wouldn't allow them to be loose together alone for a while and would crate the other dog as well. When you are dealing with a dog that digs at a window I wouldn't risk it. If he broke the window during the day he could really injure himself and then be loose and you wouldn't know it for a bit. You can also try leaving a television or radio on for some noise. Some dogs do better if it sounds like they aren't totally alone. Rotate who you have doggy play dates with and when you get the new dog it's still important that they get to meet and play with other dogs both together and on their own. This is the tough part of having dogs that are deeply bonded and why independent socialization is so important, not just as puppies but as adults as well.

Thank you for the input. Yesterday was a really bad day again. Destroyed my bed, and the windowsill in my room. He had his best buddy with him for the day, calming bites, tv on and treat toys. He is just so sad and now wants out of the house. He got that window open and escaped on his first episode. He tries all the windows now. I caved and bought a crate last night, but feel terrible.
He is around a lot of dogs at different times, as I am the "go to" dogsitter for friends and family. I just don't know what else to do to keep him safe.

he will get used to the crate again. If he is that destructive though you may need to zip tie or carabiner clip all the walls together if you got a wire crate as he may try to pull the wire crate apart and escape it as well.

Sounds like a doggy daycare or dog nanny situation. Spider escaped when i was in denver. She actually chewed the mobile home floor all the way through and escaped through the floor
