Hey all Smile
I have 2 amazing fur babies; Maddie, 4yr. old, 94lb., spayed, blk. German Shepherd/blk. Lab mix & my handsome boy... Mala"chi", 3 yr. old, 83lb. husky. Both are rescues. Maddie was first... have had pets my whole life & have NEVER bonded like I have to these 2!! They are super special!! Maddie was 7 months & 45lbs!! & I had her bout a year before we got Chi who was aprox 1yrs old.
Did not intend to adopt Chi... he was a "foster fail" LOL!!! Laughing
I contacted our local husky rescue to volunteer to help batten down the hatches for hurricane Marie in September 2017... [my sister had/has 2 huskies & I knew, through her, the girl at the shelter & wanted to help!!]… their reply was that they were ordered to leave & didn't have enough room to bring all the rescues with them... it was not what I had intended, but HATED the idea of dogs being left behind so I agreed to foster Chi for the duration of the storm until they could get up & running again... picked him up LITERALLY as storm was bearing down on FL!! affraid  it hit the next day as far as I can remember... by the day after that... I was done for Rolling Eyes  I called the rescue & told them they would have to fight me to take him back Rolling Eyes Laughing  Anyway, Maddie & him fell in great together & the rest is history... I WAS feeding them Taste of the wild/bison variety but Chi refused to eat it or the food they gave me... Maddie will eat ANYTHING!! started adding people food, mainly scrambled eggs, beef or bone broth, or sautéed ground beef, pork or turkey... besides the expense [kibble wasn't cheap either!!]. In addition they were getting "Waggin Train chicken jerky tenders", & a few other types of treats... but, I was worried about whether it was good for them especially after I found out dogs were dying of Salmonella affraid ... new vet says NO!!! & told me to stop ALL the treats too??!!!!... told me to switch to Royal Canin prescription HP & only treat was to be old fashioned PLAIN large Milk Bones... now my baby won't barely eat at all!! Vet said the $100++ price of kibble was worth it b/c he'd NEVER seen ANY dog not like it... & the people food & treats were VERY unhealthy & I should stop immediately!! Wellllll… he was WRONG... Chi hates it... & the milk bones... so I started giving them cheapie [doggie McDonalds] treats;"Purina Beggin strips" but not nearly as often & have held fast to no additives in the kibble... he will begrudgingly eat it... when he's starving... but that's it!! he even broke into the gate on my bathroom to eat kitty poops from the litter box???!!! scratch  I'm at a loss... I am aware of the "Husky thing" that they can go a time w/o eating, that they were bred that way... but he's just NOT HAPPY & I NEED him to be happy!!! Any suggestions for a Husky friendly healthy kibble or a fresh diet I can afford [for the love of God... it would cost me $1,500.00 PER MONTH for that... more than my mortgage!!] & some healthy treats that won't kill my dogs!!! H E L P!!!!!

83lbs for a Husky?  That's a big boy! You sure he's just not full?  Very Happy

It sounds like he will eat people food so it doesn't sound like a medical issue.

If it were me, I'd get a couple samples or small bags of different types of decent quality kibble to see if he showed more interest in one or another.  We use Costco Nature's Domain.  Taste of the Wild is considered a good quality kibble so that would be a good choice if you can get him to eat it.

Then I'd put him in a room by himself and put a bowl of whatever kibble you choose down and give him 15 minutes to eat it.  If he didn't, I'd pick it up and hold it until dinner and try again.  Assuming he wasn't losing excessive amounts of weight I'd continue this for a day or two to see if he would start to eat.

Feed him twice a day with no treats in between to start.  As a reference, our huskies only eat 2 cups of food per day.  One in the morning and one at night.

Edit: Just read a little closer: So he's 3?  You've had him for two years?  Has this always been a thing?

Huskies can become picky if you cater to them too much. How do his poops look when he does eat? Are they firm and as they should be? Making sure he doesn't have an intolerance to something that might be making his stomach hurt and cause an aversion is a starting point. Does he have any known allergies? The easiest is just adding water or bone broth to his current kibble which you have done before. Bone broth has good properties as a supplement and topping a kibble with it I would not have a problem with. Bone broth is very healthy for joints and on a husky as large as he is that is a benefit you will need as he ages. So if he will eat kibble that has water or bone broth in it then that is the route I would go.

I do partial raw. The kibble I use is Zignature or Go! Solutions Carnivore. Both are good quality and they eat it, but my bunch isn't particular picky. Sometimes I do my raw diy and balance it all myself which is very time consuming but more cost effective. When I don't have time to properly balance and meal prep I use Grandma Lucy's pre-mix and just add water and meat. It adds up, probably about the same cost as the RX diet your vet pushed, but a high quality diet for sure if you have an interest in it.

You can go the starve him out route. Apparently that works after a while on him so he is just being a butthead more than likely. You will have to do that to him for a long time before he will move over to regular feedings. So you would be doing the starvation dance for several months potentially.

I tried to go the starve out method with blue buffalo. In the end only 1 of my 4 would eat it and the magpie and crow population went down significantly. No matter how much mine like whatever kibble it never lasts so usually i have a few i rotate through. I also am on a carcass salvage list and 2 game processors give me scraps
