Grass and Huskys Empty
PostSubject: Grass and Huskys   Grass and Huskys EmptyFri May 17, 2019 8:31 pm

Sasha is my 3 year Siberian husky that my sister found (someone had abandoned her @ 10 weeks) and I gave her a lifelong home. She is absolutely beautiful and I just love her to pieces! She is well taken care of and walked daily around 3-5 miles a day. She is an indoor / outdoor dog and does very well with those living arrangements. She seems to be in excellent health and I feed her the best food I can find for her. Right now I feed her Nutri-Source Super Performance kibble. On occasion she will get boiled chicken of course some high quality treats.

So here's my question and I searched the Internet for answers and they all say the same thing that its normal for dogs to eat grass.

She loves to eat grass. Not everyday of course but once in awhile. After she eats it she throws up a clear sometimes milky liquid along with the grass she ate. Sometimes the liquid may have a lite yellowish tint to it, but not always. So I decided to keep track how often it happens and in the last 3-4 months she seems to do this once every 3-4 weeks? She has no other symptoms and she acts like nothing is going on. She always ready for her walks and very sassy when I get home from work and always hyper of course and when I'm at work she sleeps all day. My Mom actually takes care of her during the day.

I walk her every morning before going work about 3 miles and at least once or twice on the weekends. Keep in mind she has been doing this since I got her and it doesn't matter what food I she's on she still does it.

To help her with an upset tummy I give her boiled (organic) chicken w/ steam white rice and organic chicken stock. She loves it and later that day or next day she's back to normal. Sometimes I give her boiled chicken as an added treat.

So how often is too often for a dog to eat grass? When should I be concerned enough to take her to the Vets? Every article I have read says the same thing, but they never tell you exactly what is considered too often for this behavior?

I mean sometimes she will go out of her way to get the tall sweet grass you find at the parks and after they water grass she is all over it like a duck on a June bug. Go figure? I thought maybe I should just grow some special grass in the back yard just for her or add some green beans to her diet.

I just recently started giving her Primal Goats Milk. I read a lot of great things about it and she loves it!

So can anyone offer up some suggestions or have any of you experienced this sort of behavior with your Husky?

BTW she eats good when she wants too, but she is mostly grazer. She knows how to get what she wants.

She weighs about 40lbs and is 22" at her shoulders.

Other routines I have with her:

After each walk I clean her paws with a 4:1 mixture of ACV and water to remove  anything she may have picked up off the ground during her walk.
She is brushed out 5-10 minutes after each walk and longer on the weekends.
She is also professionally groomed and bathe twice a year

She current on all shots and had her 1 year booster shots, but I refuse to over vaccinate her with yearly boosters

Our dogs eat grass quite a bit. I had to cut back the grass from our neighbor's side of our fence because they were chewing the fence to get to the grass.

Didn't notice any issues before or since.

One did occasionally, the other one didn't. Oddly enough, the one that did seems to gag more then other as a general rule. e.g. drinking water too fast (?) and gags, coughs and sort of throws up a bit of something.

My husky-shepherd mix does exactly the same thing. He enjoys eating grass, he looks for certain kinds and prefers long grass. If he eats a lot, he sometimes vomits out a wad of grass or sometimes it might have some kibble in it. He doesn’t do it often. I never thought much about it, I figured he is self-medicating for an unsettled tummy or he was lacking some nutrients. He is healthy and active and normal like your dog...

What a beautiful dog you have. It seems a lot of dogs do this just not sure why? Someone told me they clean their palette and as you mentioned they have an upset tummy. Maybe some dogs have more sensitive tummies. Not sure? Wish I knew more.

Spider does that about once a week when the grass sprouts after winter. Also happens if she eats bread or breaded chicken. I went as far as taking her to the vet for it. I was told it was either nothing to worry about or it could be a small resurgence of parvo because parvo is never really cured it just goes into a remission/dormant phase but once they have it it is never as bad as the first time.
My other 3 eat grass and dont puke

Here's how sensitive Sasha's tummy. I don't know if any of you are familiar with Cadet Chicken wrap sweet potato treats. They also have duck wraps as well. I use to feed Sasha's these months ago, but after Chewy raised their prices from $12 a bag to over $25 a bag I just stopped giving them to her.

Yesterday I was at the pet store picking her up some Primal Goats Milk and I saw that they had some you could buy individually in a container for 35 cents each and thought why not. I wanted to get her something special. She eat it down loved it.

2:00 am she was having tummy issues so I was up fixing her chicken and rice mixed organic chicken stock. She's better now, but she just has a very sensitive tummy. I can tell when she's not feeling well just by the way she acts. I guess this is something that I have to accept and do my best to provide her with food that won't upset her stomach. If she had it her way she would eat chicken and rice everyday. I'm hoping the goats milk will help ..I've read nothing but great things about it.
