| I was always confused about what the exact color of my huskies were. This really helped me me figure it out. I have a black and white, and a dilute black and white. What color are your huskies?

| Konrad's a copper. I found this page a while back, it's also a good page and it has a really cool article about the genetics behind the coat colors, and to some extent the patterns (then again I'm a big dork, could be boring to everyone else...).

Check out Kristina's (arooroomom) Mickey According to that one site, Koda is a Dilute Black and White and Hailey is a Wolf Gray and White (I think- I still haven't quite figured out the official name of Hailey's coloring). _________________ www.itsahuskything.com It's a husky thing... you wouldn't understand. |

Check out Kristina's (arooroomom) Mickey I actually thought the black/tan's were husky mixes. The all black ones too.... Learn something new everyday. - Lokipaws wrote:

| Koda is wolf gray (http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs057.snc4/35211_1519177147661_1481501051_1332169_4182654_n.jpg good picture of his color). Our next will either be an agouti or dirty red if the litter turns out like the last one between the two parents planned for the breeding. |

She looks kind of like an isabella white. http://www.huskycolors.com/kim.html "There are two types of white Siberian, each a result of a different series of genes. The Extended-white is a result of complete restriction of pigments and extension of white over the entire body. The Isabella White is a result of the black pigment being oxidized into yellow or white and is nothing more than a bleached blonde! In the Isabella White there are noticeable buff tones with black points and masks and markings are sometimes visible. This coloring is due to the lack of melanin present and freckles often appear on the muzzle with buff saddles and ears. The genes whose action restricts, dilutes, extends and allows are present but not easily detected as the phenotype is all white. Progeny from either the Isabella or Extended White Siberian may be of any color." |

| She very well could be! What is odd to me is the amount of red/brown she has in her. Like the tips of her ears are reddish and she has a red/copper running throughout her coat. I don't see that on almost any of the colors! _________________ www.itsahuskything.com It's a husky thing... you wouldn't understand. |

| I must admit I've never heard of a dilute black and white. Is that really an official color? If so, then I'm still learning new stuff...as usual. Our boy is a black and white, I've always considered him a black and white and when he was younger he was a much darker black. A breeder from another husky forum always said to go by the color on the back of their ears to determine color. Well the back of my boy's ears are a solid, jet black even though his coat has lightened significantly over the years. Based on the OP's site you'd probably call my boy a dilute black and white by looking at him now but you would definitely not have classified him as such when he was younger. As for the banded hairs, it's quite normal for black and whites to have their black hairs banded, meaning alternating black and white. Back when my boy was a very dark black his black hairs were banded and they still are even today. I still call my boy a black and white because as far as I know the AKC does not recognize "dilute black" as a color, please educate me if I am wrong. My boy's coat color at 2 yrs old: And his coat color at 5 yrs old: Most people mistake him for a grey or even a silver these days. He's not, he's still a black and white. You look at the back of his ears and they are still jet black despite the changes in his overall coat darkness. _________________ |

| I don't think it's an official color, Val. I think it's more distinguishing the different varieties of color this breed has. I mean if you look at Jenns Jack and then at Jennets Zoey... Those are 2 totally different reds, yet they are both classed as Red and White. _________________ Force Free Training ThreadCheyenne, Mishka, Mickey, Rodeo, & Odin Are you a Husky owner in South Florida?! | Thanks Kristina, good to know. Yeah, I'm one of those simpletons. Red is red and black is black no matter the shade, part of my reason for not specifying dark versus light is that reds as well as blacks will often change shade throughout their lifetimes . It's so different from other breeds. With chihuahuas you have dilute blacks which are officially recognized as blue, and then you also have dilute blues which are officially recognized as silver. And then silver in a Chihuahua coat is totally different from the silver describing a husky coat. Such an intriguing topic...which leads me to wonder...why do other breeds officially name and recognize dilute colors while others do not? _________________ |

| Yeah- Koda's ears are totally black and for that reason, I think people on other forums have told me he's black and white. That's normally what I go with... Hailey, however, is still a mystery! _________________ www.itsahuskything.com It's a husky thing... you wouldn't understand. |

Thanks! I wish I could tell you what it was! It's got too much brown/red to be a silver, nothing in coat to indicate black, but too much black/silver to be a red & white... so what the hell is she?! _________________ www.itsahuskything.com It's a husky thing... you wouldn't understand. |

| I would get an experienced breeders opinion on Hailey's color. I was reading up on Isabella white and basic gist of the color is:
An Isabella White Siberian Husky is usually monochromatic, with jet-black points. The points may also be liver or flesh toned. Isabella White Siberian Huskies have a white undercoat with distinct buff tones above the hock and elbow, on the ears, on the saddle and buff down the center of the tail.

| She doesn't have a saddle so that rules that out. Maybe she is a sable? Cindi's Gus is a sable and he's got some similar color to Hailey. Also if you do a google image search for "sable siberian huskies" the results come up with number of them with similar colors. My best guess at this point for Hailey would be sable.
The AKC description of Sable: SABLE AND WHITE The guard hair is banded with a reddish cast near the root with black tipping. Always accompanied by black points; this color gives the dog a reddish cast and is not to be confused with wolf gray
Here's another description of sable from a breeders website: Sable & White - Sable is a gray & white Siberian with red highlights thrown in. The guard hairs of their coat (the longer coarser ones) will be white on the bottom and black at the tips. _________________ |
