| I currently have a pit bull mix and at the end of this month we will be picking up our husky from the breeder.
I have read and also heard that feeding a large puppy or extra large puppy puppy food you are causing the puppy to grow to quick which can cause orthopedic issues in the future. That feeding adult dog food is ok as long as it is wetted down, since puppies in the wild would be eating the same thing as the adults. But to be fair they are not eating dry dog food so I can't really agree with that argument.
I feed our pit bull TOTW. If feeding adult food is better we will be wetting down the adult food down for our puppy. We thought about feeding the puppy food that TOTW has but its only 4 stars. I thought about feeding the grain free authority that's 4.5 stars.
But we are also considering Canidae All life stages but this is also 4 stars and I am a little iffy on feeding anything under 4.5 though I would prefer 5 stars.
We are on a budget. So foods like Acana and Orijen is too much for us. Also I don't like Fromm I dont think they are as "great" as everyone says. I don't think they are comparable with TOTW at all. But thats just me.
I am getting my ratings off of Dogfooadvisor
Any help on this topic would be wonderful. Also I think a raw diet would be to much $ for us. Also I think I couldn't stomach it.

| Welcome to the forum Alexis. From reading your other post, I would imagine your guy may end up being over breed standard, but you never know. My newest addition is a GSD and they are considered large breed to a huskies medium breed. Adult dog food is not recommended, an all life stage food like TOTW is fine for small/medium breeds. However, adult and all life stage food IS NOT ok for large breeds. Adult/all life has too high of a calcium to phospherous ratio, which is not good for puppies. Puppy food is designed specifically for puppies. Since you are on a budget, and you do like TOTW, I would go with TOTW puppy version for your new pup. Many huskies are very sensitive in the tummy area, and many do well on TOTW, but if Acana, Orijen, or raw fit your budget I would lean towards them, since they do not fit your budget, then TOTW will work fine. My husky has been on it for over 2 years now and does great on it. My new gsd is on the puppy version and is doing good too.
Now back to your first paragraph. Feeding too much calcium is not good for a large breed pup. If they grow too fast, indeed could have issues as an older dog. Adult foods tend to have a higher calcium percentage. With a large breed dog you want ratios as close to 1.1:1 Calcium to phospherous as you can get with 1.5:1 being the extreme high end, not going over that. I can think of no adult dog food that is high quality that fits that. TOTW puppy is on the high end at 1.4:1 and felt that would be the highest limit I felt ok with, since TOTW fits my budget. So fitting into your parameters TOTW puppy is what I would recommend. If I can clarify something let me know.
BTW, my gsd pup at 9 weeks weighed 11 pounds, small end for a gsd, we have a thread here called the weigh in and has weights listed from members here of their pups, it will give you an idea where yours fit in. My husky did not weigh as much as my gsd, as an adult my husky is over standard at around 65 pounds. I would question the breeder, and see if they have malamutes at their site, mals are much larger than huskies, and have some similarities in the looks department. $450, technically is on the low end for cost of a pure bred husky, imho. Did they have record of the dams and sires hip and eye certifications? Are they giving you a health guarantee? Of course you will love your little one, however, I would be a little leery in them being "pure", just my thoughts, I may be definitely wrong. He/she is a cutie. Good luck. |

| No malamutes on the site three purebred AKC registered huskies. They had two dogs running around outside. A great dane, and a Newfoundland mix but I was told they were only visiting. The parents are fine. I never asked for a health guarantee. They only breed huskies, but the dad is over breed standard at 70 pounds but he is defiantly a full blooded husky. The lineage proves it. They are licensed and everything. I am just a little worried since he seems so big. I know $450 is low but they are starting out. We jumped on the deal as I have been looking for a husky for so long. Every husky found in a shelter is gone in a matter of hours. So we had to try to find someone in the area who breeds as a back up. I saw him and fell in love. A vet I talked to today said it would be best to feed him adult food. I am beyond confused. It's starting to make me sick to my stomach will all of my worries about this puppy. haha |

| Sorry I was short on that, tending to my new pup. Vets are not properly trained, they are as far as health issues, but not feeding. Feed him TOTW puppy for at least a year, if at a year he is still growing, it is recommended to feed large breed dogs puppy food until 18 months.
The breeder is a back yard breeder, they are not breeding to standard. Please don't take that as rude, because my girl is the product of a byb. It just leads to potential issues down the road. There is a possibility tho, that one of these other dogs could have mated with the female, and this is the result, a very large puppy that should be considerably smaller. Trust me it has happened to many people. The breeders, because they are not skilled, don't realize that a female can mate with more than one dog, and have puppies that end up being all different.
I understand the why's of getting your puppy, I have been there. Licenses does not mean they are healthy dogs. Licensing is a regulation from where you live, not on if the dogs are bred to better the breed. That is why going to a reputable breeder is so important. Of course what I am saying is a moot point, in that you have paid for your pup, but realize that just because your pup has AKC papers does not mean he/she is not going to have problems with hips and eyes in the future, it doesn't mean that he will fit breed standard if you decide you want him to compete in AKC events. It is not that difficult to get a dog AKC papers. Again, my husky is from a similar situation, so I am not chastising you to be mean, not at all, but be informed, a dog from a byb, may not be healthy, and will not fit the standards and you have to make adjustments because of this. A quality breeder will ensure that your dog will be breed standard, they give a health guarantee, and they can prove their dogs are healthy through hip and eye testing. We have a member here that has a one year old husky, gorgeous guy, looks breed standard, and he has juvenile cataracts, because she unknowingly purchased her pup from a byb, or a less than reputable breeder. Had she went to a quality breeder, they would be able to say with pretty good confidence that their pups will not have cataracts because they did the testing on the sire and dam.
Again, Please do not take any of that wrong, I am trying to have you realize, that in the future please buy from a reputable breeder. and ignore a vets food suggestion. |
