| I have a 5 month old puppy ZEEV ( born on May 26th ) who weighs about 55 pounds now we got him when he was 8 weeks old and about 14 pounds. He has been growing at an avg .of 3 lbs per week consistently. We got him from a backyard breeder . His mother and Father are NOT AKC registered . His mother was brought to the US from Turkey . The owner still has a puppy ( fully grown now ) from one of her previous litters whom we got to meet , who is extermely big ( could be atleast 90 lbs) but didnt look fat at all. The owner said Zeev might get that big too .. How do i know if my Puppy is overweight or just he is big by bone structure.?/ What is the maximum size and weight my husky might get to ? Will there be any weight issues if my husky is growing at this rate ?? |

| Indu, he may indeed get up to 70 pounds, he does look slightly heavy, but he may be due for a growth spurt. Stick to a puppy, and more importantly a large breed puppy food until he is 18 months old. You do not want him to grow too big too fast, since it affects their bones and joints. I can not remember what you are feeding him and how much. My girl is around 65, similar circumstances, and at around 5 months was pretty close to same weight, just she was taller than your guy. |

| Indu, also I see a distinct growth plate on Zeeve, so he is still growing, and he may grow up until he is around 2 years old. You may want to back off a little on his food. Growing too fast too soon, may result in problems as he ages. Lean dogs are healthier dogs. |

| I was feeding him I am's and purina puppy before.
Now we switched to TOTW pacific stream and Blue wilderness both puppy formula. I sometimes mix these both too or alternate each other.
After an earlier discussion on these forums ( thank you all for your inputs !!) I cut back his portion size from 4 cups to 21/2 cups per day .
I am only giving him treats when its absolutely necessary.
what are his exercise requirements ??
We go for about a 1-1.5 mile walk atleast 4-5 times a week which includes quick sprints and fast walking for parts of it.
We live on 4th floor apt , there is no elevator and he loves to climb up and down the stairs very quickly and he does that atleast 5-6 times days.
When its rainy outside , we mostly play fetch and catch indoors. He likes to play fetch and catch, so we play fetch with him at least 10 mins a day and he likes to chase around and catch the laser light pointer.
Is he getting enough exercise ? What are his exercise requirements at this age ?
Also, Please excuse my ignorance. what are his growth plates and how do you identify them ..
Please advise. |

| There is a little bump on his front legs, just above his ankle area first pic you can see those bumps. When they are gone, he is done growing tall wise.
You are over exercising, and that may be why he is eating a lot. The amount is a good amount, and may take up to a month to see results. I would play more with him and less walking. At 5 months rule of thumb is 5 minutes for every month old, so at 5 months a half hour of continued exercised is the max. And on soft surfaces. A mile may be about 25 minutes, but make sure it is on grass and not concrete. let him rest while walking if he needs to. A great exercise for you both is to walk and then do command training, this will exercise his mind and body, so less on his growing bones and joints and tiring his mind will tire his body. |

| Indu, an excellent source for viewing pups and dogs, and seeing how a standard husky grows is in the show section of the forum, first thread titled Conformation a realistic view. Going to page 25, if you don't want to read all of it, explains growth plates from one of the most knowledgeable people on the forum as far as show dogs, and the conformation of huskies. Hope that helps more. |

| He looks like he's going in the same direction as my dog. Lycus was approximately growing almost 10lbs a month as well. He is currently between 75-80lbs now and definitely not overweight, but he is very tall. As Renee stated, I would cut back a little on the heavy exercise, especially the sprints.
Lycus also had 'bumps' on the front of his feet and our vet said he was actually growing a little too quick so I had to be extra careful not to let him get overweight and hurt his joints.
Since you got him from a backyard breeder, it's more than likely that he will be above standard size and weight as well but just make sure he is healthy and he should be fine! |
