Hi guys. So I just adopted a friend's husky. She's almost two years old. He was feeding her cooked chicken and rice with some kibble (not sure which kibble). I felt she wasn't getting enough nutrients so I switched her to orijen kibble with rice. She didn't like it. I put a little of the yoghound yogurt on top and that has helped but she's still being really finnicky. I know the adjustment is hard for her but we just want her to eat. We've had to slow the treats down to see if that helps her eat her meals more. Any suggestions?

It may take her a while to settle in your home and feel comfortable enough to eat.
A lot of them stop eating when the move owners as they dont realise they are there to stay at first.

You could try some grated cheese on top of her food .
I dont feed kibble but this is what i would do if i did.
Make up some scrambled eggs and mix it in the the kibble and then sprinkle alittle cheese over the top.
Failing that some canned pumpkin over the kibble may entice her.

Linzi has some great suggestions to try. I personally mix my dogs' kibble with wet food for several reasons, one of which is taste. Wink

Give her time to adjust. Ours didn't eat much when we first brought him home and even to this day when we travel he eats less due to the stress. He also doesn't eat much when we board him. She's likely stressed and will need some time. As long as she is eating something I wouldn't be too concerned yet.

Hi There!

We do raw food only - chicken, pork, steak, turkey - whatever we can get on sale. In our experience, when a friend's pup is bored with their food, we suggest raw. Once the dog gets the hang of eating raw chicken (tearing it apart) they are excited again about food. For our Jack Russell, it's been like having a treat every time she has a meal - she never cared about dinner until we switched her to raw. Now, she'll gladly knock Evo (100+ lbs) out of the way for her meal!

I'm sure your new addition will settle in soon and find that you love her and will be eating again in no time. Plus, my understanding from this site is that Huskies sometimes will just not eat - apparently that's just their nature.

I also see you are a "newborn" on the forum, so welcome!

Your three year old is probably just getting used to the other dog being around. Dogs act funny when big changes occur and it's their appetite that usually gets hit the hardest. Give her a few days and let her adjust. If you're really concerned with her not eating you can separate her for a bit, throw an egg in her food and let her eat in peace. I wouldn't worry though, she just needs to get into a new daily rhythm since there's a new friend in the house now.

We'd need to know a bit more before letting you know if there's a concern. How long have you had the 2 year old? Is anything else out of the ordinary?

However, I'm inclined to echo Chad's sentiments. Dogs stop eating for the slightest stress. For example, Koda loves the car, but anytime we go on a long car ride, he stops eating regularly for a couple of days afterwards. Chad's right- it's usually the first thing to take a hit when your dog is stressed out.

I wouldn't worry about it for now. Just keep an eye on it Smile

I agree with the above , its nothing to worry about as long as they havnt been in your sock drawer.
Make sure both dogs are up to date on worming meds though , once is notenough so a second dose may be in need.

Try some warm scrambled eggs mixe in with thier food , or some grated cheese , works a treat in this house.

If she's only been there 5 days, I wouldn't worry Smile The older one just needs time to adjust.

If she doesn't start eating regularly soon, try feeding them in separate rooms for a little while, then gradually move them so they can see each other, then closer and closer together. It may take a while, but she just needs to know that you aren't trading her in for a younger model Wink

I agree with the others - it'll just take time for her to get used to her new surroundings. I would try the scrambled eggs and the cheese as others suggested. Sometimes these huskies can go days without eating much. She'll "catch up."

I'm not familiar with puppies, but if she wasn't eating normal within a couple of days, I would see the vet thinking worms or something. The Huskies I've had a chance to be around don't really eat all that much. In fact, my sled dogs go through phases where they skip an entire day before eating again. Usually that happens when our exercise routine changes and the seasons change.

She honestly may be bored with her food. Have you tried putting something in it to supplement it? Every once in a while we'll throw a raw egg in Koda's kibble or yogurt. It's good for him and keeps it interesting.

Huskies are often picky eaters, especially when it comes to kibbles. May I ask what kind you are feeding? How thin is thin? You shouldn't be able to see her ribs, but you should be able to feel them easily. Huskies often stay lean in their younger years as well. For example, Koda just turned too and he JUST finally filled out in the last couple of months. Before that people always commented on how thin he looked.

Raw egg. It's good for their coats too.

There are two ways that most of us feed our dog. You can free feed, which is to leave their bowls down and keep it filled all the time, which is much harder to gauge how much they are eating, etc. Or you can schedule feed. We schedule feed Koda. He gets fed twice a day and we'll put his bowl down for about 10 mins and then pick it up. If he doesn't eat within that 10 mins, we wait until the next scheduled time to feed him. It teaches him to eat when we tell him to and allows us to more closely monitor his food. He doesn't usually get anymore food if he misses a meal. If you're feeding Kibble, it's okay to save the food until later, you don't have to throw it away.

Feeding in the crate is always good as it helps associate the crate with positive things and makes it them feel more at home in it, but you don't have to feed in it.

We also feed ours 2x's a day. they also eat all the food in like 5min so never have to worry about leftovers. we also feed them in their crate as it also helps keep each of them from eating the others food, we do not lock them in the crate to eat though, or close the door. I think you just need to find a food she likes and it can be trial and error. I know when Jack was sick and we switched to chicken and rice he was so picky to go back to the kibble, because he wanted the chicken but it only lasted a few days, so I see how you would be worried about her only wanting to eat if there is good stuff in the food so maybe do it every so often. what we did to find a food they liked was going to a "mom and pop" dog store and asked for samples then feed the samples as "treats" not food to see what ones they liked best, then we went and got a larger bag of the one they pick which was TOTW

Raw egg is perfectly okay, and very healthy for them actually Smile It's a good source of protein and healthy for their coats. You can give it to her plain or on her kibble, whichever you would like Smile

Scrambled egg is also a good treat if you want something less messy for her Smile

Thank you very much! One raw egg per meal, right? Is it advisable to put a raw egg everyday on her meal?
