| Good Morning All,
We have read on here to not run our Frigga until she is over a year old. When I say run, I think of hooking her up to a bike or a sled. But, she is such a bundle of energy and I am wondering how far is too far to walk her (more like drag me)? She is up to an hour walk for being 14 weeks. Usually afterwards she is pooped out for 2 days. Nothing personal; but, pooped out puppy is nice with the exception of being an overly tired toddler with a tendency to throw temper tantrums. We mostly walk on the streets. This last week I took her out on old logging roads through a redwood forest close to our home. She had SOOOO much fun smelling, playing in the creeks; and rolling in all the tall grass. Could I cause injury walking her for too long?
Today Ty and I are purchasing her a equine lunge-line (30 meters long) and as a reward a smoked cow femur (this is to help with her gnawing and chewing since she is of age that she will start to loose her teeth). We are taking her to Headwaters Forest, just 10 miles away from our home, and there are LOTS of creeks for her to play in.
About the cow femur, any advice on these? Has anyone ever given one to their Husky? Did you have any problems?
Thank you all for your advice in advance.
Erica

| I'd be really careful with hour long walks at this age. The general rule of thumb is 5 minutes per month of age, so really she should only be going for 15-20 minutes right now. You could do several of the shorter walks per day, but mental stimulation and training is really exhausting (and very good) for them as well. Start mixing in little periods of training, like maybe 5 minutes here and there to help supplement the walks. Also, and I'm really jealous of all the outdoor stuff you have (I love NorCal), but be a little careful exposing her to too much before she's finished her shots. Not sure about your part of the country, but here on the east coast and where I used to live in FL, we had huge Parvo problems because it lives so long in the soil. As an aside, I love reading your Frigga stories. She sounds like quite the little character _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. On the one hand, you become a fierce defender of the ways in which your little one is perfectly ordinary — all the things he or she can do that are just like what everybody else does. And yet, you never lose sight of how absolutely extraordinary that very ordinariness is, how difficult, remarkable and rewarding that fight to be 'just like everybody else' has been." -Gwen Cooper, "Homer's Odyssey" Shadow - 03/01/2013 - 10/02/2014 |
