 Puppy Walking how long? Empty
PostSubject: Puppy Walking how long?    Puppy Walking how long? EmptyThu Sep 06, 2012 7:17 am

hey,

Nikiya has had her second injection a week ago and went for her first walk last night. Am I right in thinking there is a rule of thumb for how long / far puppies can walk in relation to their age because of their joints?

she is just over 12 weeks old. last night we did about 12 minutes, mostly on grass. Doesnt seem very long considering she runs around a lot in my garden etc and it was only walking?

Open to advice ofcourse Smile

5 minutes per month of age, and no running until they're close to a year Smile

Yeah I thought it was 5 mins per month but seems awfully short in reality, its not even once round the block and she runs about in the garden like crazy some days so would this not damage her joints by the same principals?

what about if the walk is mainly on grass can it be a bit longer? softer on her joints?

Thanks guys Idea

Structured walking, and romping and playing in the yard are very different. The consistent pounding on a puppies growth plates during walks is different than stop'n go running/playing. That's why we all advocate for 5 mins per month, it's in the best interest for your pups growing joints. Smile
