Won't eat breakfast, but then throws up/dry heaves Empty
PostSubject: Won't eat breakfast, but then throws up/dry heaves   Won't eat breakfast, but then throws up/dry heaves EmptyFri Jul 18, 2014 1:47 pm

Hello. I have read other topics about Huskies not eating, but haven't seen any where the dog will throw up. My sister has a 2 year old female Husky, Zala, who is only about 35lbs. She is very thin and you can see her spine and hip bones easily. She will scarf down dinner no problem but in the morning she refuses to eat. Then about 30 minutes to an hour after she didn't eat breakfast, she will throw up a small amount of the yellow pancake mix looking puke, and then dry heave for a while after that. She drinks water regularly throughout the day.

She seems very happy during the day, full of energy and gets plenty of exercise (usually an hour long bike ride keeping her at a full run and then plenty of time playing fetch and running around a large yard throughout the day). We have tried a lot of dog food brands, both solid and soft. We have also soaked the food in chicken broth, or given her all "human" food meals like chicken and rice, but in the mornings she just won't touch it and then proceeds to throw up.

Is this a normal Husky behavior? I have always had Labs who would eat everything under the sun so this is new to me. During the first year of her life she wasn't taken care of very well. Her owners "forgot" to feed her a lot and when they did a lot of times it was leftovers from their meals. Her stool is normal and has normal frequency. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

This is what prompted me to switch to grain free formula - in the morning only, he'd refuse his breakfast, eat grass madly, retch and spit up clear foamy fluid. Problem gone once I switched to 4Health turkey and potato (though, come to think of it, I wormed him shortly after I switched so...?

Amy is right on, we give grain free as well. Worms can play a role too, have you checked to make sure she is worm free? Funny I have a Siamese cat who was diagnosed with acid reflux because she did the same thing. Also may want to take her to the vet to rule out worms, and diabetes and anything else that has those symptoms, especially if she continues vomiting after going grain free. I did read a study not too long ago that dogs eat grass not because of upset tummies, but dogs smell grass as a protein, so maybe our dogs are just hungry when they eat grass, hmm.

I'm pretty sure she doesn't have worms. Her coat is healthy and stool is good and still has tons of energy, no coughing or bloating. I just bought three different grain-free foods, and go figure the Blue Buffalo (the most expensive) was the only one she would touch. She only ate a little bit but I had just given her some chicken and peas not long ago. I'll see how she does at dinner. Thanks for the advice.

Forgot to mention, Welcome to the forums. My girls doesn't throw up any more, I have her on Taste of the Wild, she just isn't a morning eater, she gets a couple grain free biscuits in the morning and then is hungry in the afternoon. So maybe a light snack in the morning, and then a meal in the afternoon may help.

My dogs don't eat a kibble breakfast either. I only give a couple of desirable treats for my dogs' "breakfast". They really only prefer one main meal and the morning treats are enough to keep their tummies from being empty and therefore eliminate the empty stomach bile vomiting. Just my experience.
