Little Ms. Asia throws FITS over dinner! Mya and Kody had gotten their routine down. Kody would wait in his crate (gate open) and Mya would sit outside of the kitchen. Still working with Mya a bit since she'll try to walk up to me 2-3 times while their food is hydrating. However, that's major progress for her.

Anyways, back to Asia. She'll cry like we're beating her up, bite the bars, dig at the gate of the crate, etc. I've tried ignoring her until she calms down, but it goes on for 10+ minutes. Gets to the point that Mya and Kody start getting frustrated and acting up also.

This had been about 10min into her attack. Kody had been sitting down (in the crate) quietly, but after awhile can't take it anymore. She was acting much worse than this a few minutes before

Any other suggestions or than letting her throw her tantrum and feed her once she calms down? Should I feed Mya and Kody since they're being good and feed her once she chills out?

one of my previous dogs did that too and after being told to stop and she didnt i would say ok TIMEOUT and cover her crate with a sheet and once she calmed down then she would come out. right now with ax n roxy they eat together or he gets sad loooool.

Honestly, I would throw a bowl of water over her in there and deal with the other dogs like normal. But that's me. I don't tolerate that and make it quite clear that life sucks when that happens. Looks like you've got a bundle of fun there! Good luck!

I agree with Eddie. I always feed a new addition last anyway. Now that I have had all three for sometime now, I feed the first one who sits calmly and looks at me not the food bowl. None of mine get there food until they do. It makes feeding time less stressful.

Yeah, she always gets her bowl last too. Weird thing is that once I open the crate door she already knows to move back, sit, and wait until I tell her to eat. Just doesn't get the shush it while I'm prepping their food Kody was sitting quietly so I'll just feed him and make her see how he gets his food only when he's quiet.

Piper would get excited while I prepared the food too but I would stop preparing and make her sit before I would get back to preparing. I think Willow wanted to slap her in the head cause she knew she would have to wait as well! Lol! I wish I could watch the video. Damn laptop!

Edited to add. I prepare all three bowls at the same time so all three have to sit calmly while I do that. if one is excited then they all have to wait. But once the bowls are ready, then I treat them individually.

Boy do you have your hands full with this one..

I have a dog that could care less about eating we have to talk him into eating.

I think there several good ideas from others on how to handle it.

I'm with Mindy. She'll learn when you stop what you're doing until she settles down. It takes a while to get a routine, she's new. Be firm and consistent ignore her antics and she'll get it.

She's just excited. At least you know she's food-motivated (useful for training!). For all you know, she's not used to regular meals.

I agree with Sam. If she's over-excited, just stop what you're doing until she calms down. She only has to calm down for a second, and then you can start again. Be consistent, and she'll get the hang of it.

Getting three huskies to be calm at once has to be harder than concentrating on one at a time, but it depends on what works for your set-up. Also, be aware that some behaviours get worse before they get better, so you may temporarily get more noise (it's called an extinction burst).

The thing with Eddy's water idea is that the crate is right next to your couch, and you probably don't want to pour water on the couch. (Also it might put her off her crate, which isn't too good either). I agree with Eddy that you should sort it out, just not the mechanism, but that bar of red and green amuses me for some reason.

I agree with Ghost completely. Delilah was horribly defensive of food before we got her. She was a rescue so until she was with us I have no idea what happened. We worked through it but she used to get really mouthy. This forum has taught me a lot about how to treat your dog and I know meeting Asia with any form of aggression, as i am seeing Eddies idea to be, would be horrible. I say ignore her until she stops. It will take a long time, but it will get better and better and less and less. Just ignore her and feed the others. She will learn very quickly.

But, don't make her feel bad, because it may just be that she didn't get regular meals before.

Honestly I agree with Eddy. Rodeo is a SCREAMER. It drives me nuts (this whole Red Dog theory is looking more like fact...) while he doesn't do it around when i'm making food, he does it when I come home. Like last night. Came home at 1am and he is SCREAMING this horrible scream and jumping on everything... I have a watergun and I give him a few shots. It stops it.

Also if the other dogs are behaving, totally feed them. It's not their fault she's a bratty red dog.

Call the SPCA Kristina is shooting her dogs! lol.

+1 with throwing a sheet over her crate so she can't see and water if she really won't stop. And around here, if they are that bad, they usually don't get fed! I wait until hours later when Elara isn't hyper expecting food and sneak it in. So eventually she gets calm=food, hyper=no food.

Ok have not watched the video but based on what all are saying I would not do a dish of water but I would try a water gun (less mess) also the blanket but before doing any of that have you tried to leave her crate door open and will she stay there? U said she does sit and back up once u open the door. We feed in the crates with doors open but they know to sit and wait in there till I bring the food over and have to wait to eat. I forget how we go to that point but I'm sure it took lots of waiting on my part for them to get it. Hang in there and no food till she behaves. I would feed kody and mya when they are behaving.

Thanks for all of the advice guys! I had a dream that I sprayed her water instead of pouring water over her Like Ghost said, the crate is next to the couch and getting water all over it wouldn't be cool. It's leather, but still a pain in the butt to clean up. If it was Mya and I sprayed her with water she's be like "oh, yes yes yes, more please!". Not sure on Asia's reaction to water yet so I'm going to stop by Walgreens on the way home and get a bottle sprayer. If that doesn't work then feed the other 2 and let her scream in the crate until she calms down. Even if it takes an hour. Feel bad for the neighbors, but oh well!

She also throws this fit when I leave with Mya and Kody. I feel so bad for leaving her screaming, but she needs to understand that sometimes she just can't go. Same goes for Mya and Kody. Sometimes all 3 can't go...period. Like yesterday, for example, the weather was nice so we took Mya and Kody for a bike ride and she screamed so much that her voice was going away! After the bike ride I left Ivan outside with Mya and Kody and brought Asia out for a walk with all of us. She needs to learn that we'll be back and she'll get her turn too. When I run with Mya and then leave her home to take Asia and Kody for a walk she doesn't freak out. There's no way that I could walk the 3 anytime soon. Asia is horrible on the leash so I'm trying to get her used to walking next to Kody. All she does is zigzag around EVERYWHERE, gets behind me, and jumps all over Kody constantly. He gets mad at her and snaps. I would get mad too! She's so annoying! The other 2 pull, but at least they walk FORWARD! LOL!

This is so much harder than I thought guys. Seriously!!!

On a positive note though. Asia slept next to Mya on the doggie beds all night

Oops, we posted at the same time! I haven't tried leaving the crate door open b/c as of right now it's on top of Kody's. You'll see when you watch the video. I'm afraid that she'll jump down and hurt herself. She's so clumsy!

Seriously, she's young and completely untrained. You've got a lot of work ahead of you, Melissa. Be consistent (that's my weakness with both kids and dogs), tough and patient - she'll eventually learn the rules. I think you have been given great advice. I can't wait to hear how she responds to the water squirt....

Yeah Melissa I think it has a lot to do with her being young and having not many rules and boundaries when she was younger. She's been with you a week (I think?) and it will take a few more for her to "get it." Don't give up! If it's any compensation I left Rodeo with my dad and took everyone else to work a few weeks ago. When I came to get him he said all he did was scream. All. Day.

Everyday I find myself saying "god please give me patience" several times a day Gotta laugh. Oh, and if her and Kody would seriously stop rough housing for just an hour so that I can cook it would be great! Little shit is so rough! I know it's normal, but seriously she's made Kody cry a few times. He would never hurt her, but I think he needs to put her in her place just once!!! if they did it in the yard it would be nice too, but nope they choose to do it on the couch and our bed

I would it will get better with time, but I just have to vent! All that put aside, we love her very much and it's so worth it!!!

Hang in there, Melissa - the little crazy white one took months to get a routine down! I was *so tired* the first week. It gets better every week. For the crazy playing, I would lead them both outside when it started. Now they "get it" that the house and my precious hardwood floors are not a playground.

Oh, and we finally got the "walk your dog with love" harness and it's AWESOME (Thanks, Mindy!). Hubby keeps saying "Omg, it's like a different dog!". Took forever to come, so expedite the shipping!

Melissa, look at it another way. A dog that is stressed and miserable isn't interested in food. Some rescue dogs don't eat properly for weeks or months in a new place because they are so stressed by everything. And yet your new girl has settled in so well that she is not just hungry but excited by food already and you haven't had her long! So although the excitement is annoying, you should congratulate yourself on helping her feel at home so quickly!!

IMHO if you've never looked up at the heavens in the middle of a field or some other random spot and just grumbled to yourself about how "Bad" your dog is, or asked your dog "How can you do this to me!? I feed you I give you a good home!? Whats your Problem !?", you've never had a dog, or at least a puppy . Or maybe that's just me LoL.

I wanted to reply earlier but work was calling. I too would just feed Mya and Kody if they are being respectful of your rules and just let Asia whine and woo until she calmed down for hers. Like everyone else has said. Weather you use your squirt bottle, a bucket of water, or just time, the message is the same "My house, my Rules and if you misbehave there are consequences".

Your doing well Melissa, but you know that . Just keep at it.... Just be strong like you were with Mya when she was jumping like CRAZY at the door last year before walks.

If you are stopping at Wallgreens on the way home, maybe invest in a pair of earplugs though

Yep, especially with huskies!!! My dogs must think their middle names are some curse word that I'm not going to say. haha!

Mya has gotten much better, but she still does it right when I go for the leashes. As long as I block the door she'll just sit and whine. Don't think it will ever be 100%, but something is something. At least I can leave the house with Mya and Kody now. That's all I wanted.

I wish you the best with her I give you alot of credit for all of you effort with her and still dealing with the Kody and Mya different issues also.
