Second husky - choosing a puppy Empty
PostSubject: Second husky - choosing a puppy   Second husky - choosing a puppy EmptyWed Oct 02, 2013 11:21 pm

Hi, I have a beautiful girl Winter. She is currently 5.5 month old. She is an amazing dog that listens, does incredibly well in obedience and has never been destructive. Having said that she still runs around like a lunatic sometimes (she has doggy door so comes in and out) and gets hyper but she gets plenty of exercise. I work from home 3 days a week so she isn't alone much but I can't play with her constantly and she seems lonely at times. I have put my name to the breeder months ago when I first got her and she finally has puppies (just born) - I will get a first pick out of 4. There are 2 males and 2 females (6 puppies all together but one has been reserved by her vet and one she is keeping). My girl gets along with males and females so that is not an issue. She has also been spayed not long ago. I know that males are more dominant and females are supposedly better for family with young kids (which I am planning to have), are more loyal (???), easier to train (though I see some smarties males at obedience school so not sure), easier to housebreak etc.
My biggest fear is that a male one will be super hyper, destructive and dominant...
Myself and my husband are both clear on rules with Winter and we are consistent. I will obviously raise a new pup in the same way and I was hoping that Winter (who will be over 7 months at the time) will influence/help shape new pup's temperament for the better... What are your opinions?
I have million other questions I will need to address once I pick the puppy (before bringing it home - like sleeping arrangements, feeding, crating etc but will address this later since I have over 7 weeks to go). Thanks again for your inputs.

I don't really know anything about the gender differences as I only have a female, but I have noticed that males tend to be more aggressive as puppies? I have also read on here that male/female combos tend to work better although huskies don't have gender issues like mals do. I guess it would be best to see which puppy's personality best fits your's and go from there.

I have 2 females who are thick as thieves and my boys all wrestle like no tomorrow but they also all enjoy playing together, in all honesty I've found females more tempermental at times rather than males. I think it has way more to due with the individual puppy and how they're raised much more than sex.

PostSubject: Re: Second husky - choosing a puppy   Second husky - choosing a puppy EmptyThu Oct 03, 2013 1:28 am

I think either one will be alright. The only thing I know is that my female is not very accepting of other females. I brought my male Link into my home and she had absolutely no problems the 5 months he's been here, but when I pet-sat a friend's female husky there was immediately a fight within an hour. I'm not sure what could have triggered it other than simply two dominant females put together, although she plays with her fine at the dog park so it could've been territorial. So in my preference, I would get another male, but ultimately you know your dog best and its up to you Very Happy

My female is submissive so dominance fight will not be an issue. She is a real sweetheart. When she is about to do something naughty (like jump on my bed or lick dishes inside the dishwasher) all I need to do is say no. She left dishwasher alone now so this is no longer an issue (same with bin - doesn't even sniff it since she was 12 weeks old as she knows she isn't allowed) but occasionally jumps on the bed for literally a second when she gets hyper and runs around like a lunatic.
I do hope that being just as consistent with the new pup will help and also if Winter could influence the little one - after all she will be the big sis Smile

I think since you are getting a puppy, it really won't make a difference. If you were adopting an adult dog with established personality, then you would need to consider compatibility. I personally prefer male dogs. I find their personalities to generally be more goofy and loving and females to be a bit more standoffish. That definitely isn't true for every dog, just if I had to put a label on each.

It's great she is so good, but keep in mind that you haven't really hit the 'teen' husky phase that kicks in around 6.5-7 months. My boy is 7 months, and he was an angel at 5.5 months. Stopped play biting, listened well, etc. Now that he's 7 months, its a different story. You'll know she's hit that phase when you tell her 'no' and she looks you in the eye and does it anyway. I'm sure things will work out, but keep this in mind over the 8 weeks you are waiting for your pup to come home.

I say you get another female Smile. I absolutely love the bond between my two girls, now 6 & 11 months. I have never had any problems with them, just my older one Selena who is always reminding her sister who was here first! Keeara was potty trained in a matter of a couple weeks by following in her sisters foot steps. They are both wonderful with children (I do daycare from home). Selena never hit the teen phase and has always been an angel but Keeara on the other hand likes to give me a run for my money lol. It is totally worth the challenge of two of them though! They wrestle, tug, chase each other constantly until they can't keep their eyes open!

I don't think it matters what sex of puppy you get as long as you match their temperments. Let your sibe spend some time with other pups of varying ages and sex and it will really help you see what she will handle or won't put up with. If you can make sure you get one from a breeder that does personality evaluations. My breeder watched videos of Shaqua, looked at pictures of her playing with other dogs and pups, before she chose Journey to be my pup out of her litter. She's been doing it for years so she is really good at it. Smile

The breeder is quite local and I met her while walking my girl once month ago and this is when I put my name done. The she was recommended to me by my vet - complete co-incidence. Breeder is very friendly and she suggested that before I make my choice at 5-6 weeks (I have a first pick out of 4 puppies left, 2 other ones-black & white my vet is purchasing) I can visit them since they are 2-3 weeks old and watch them change. They are also going to be doing personality tests on each pup so that will be helpful. My vet says that Sire and Dam are the most healthy, relaxed, and easy going huskies she has met apart from my girl. The clinic also participated in the testing done so I'm thrilled :)I have met sire and dam and have pictures of them too and they are amazing. I think that is a good sign that they have such great temperaments so hopefully this will pass on to the pups.
I see everyone has a difference in opinion and MGoBlue it's interesting to hear about your experienced with male as well as laura56083 advising a female. You all are right it does not matter because of puppy's age and I guess I would like the male one to see the differences in characters between them and keep things in balance perhaps. I am now leaning towards a male but the final decision will have to be made once puppies show more personalities at 5-6 weeks of age Smile
This is all very exciting, I would love to fast forward the 4 weeks and make my choice :)My Winter will be so excited, I wish I could tell her what is coming haha

Exciting!! Can't wait to see pictures Smile and yes Yuki is my princess so its definitely nice to have both a boy and a girl. Definitely cheaper buying collars because with Yuki I have to buy 10 girly ones and only one manly one for the boys xD

Visited the breeder with the hubby, they let us see the pups - pic below. They are 5 days old!
They showed us the test results on both parents and I just can't wait to pick one of these little guys up. Both parents are amazingly placid and very healthy and it is the second time these 2 are in pup Smile
The breeder said I can come over weekly to see them grow. Look forward to see them change! There are 4 white ones and 2 black and white Smile

Just wanted to say those 2 middle pups don't look like they will be white.

but also, having dealt with adding in huskies to my pack, and having seen how the teenage years/hormones can change a dog, I would recommend a male.
Bitch fights from my experience have been much worse than my boys getting into it. I hate to put human attitudes on dogs, but its really like guys getting into it and getting over as compared to girls who get way more vicious about fighting. Now I haven't dealt with a female/female husky, but my family does have female akitas, a female shiba and a female bichon along with the male huskies, shiba, bichon and aussie and we have had fights and scuffles and it has been so much easier for the boys to get over it and just move on than the girls.

I agree with the color judgement. To me, it looks like 2 reds, 2 grays, and a black, but it's hard to tell at only 5 days. My pup is grey & white, but was cream/buff with a slightly darker stripe down the center of his back. Also, if you look at their tails, you can see tiny white tips. They are SO adorable! Congrats! As far as male/female, they are both so young I think they will be fine together no matter what. Smile

We have a male (7 months old), and a female (5 months old), and so far they're doing great together. Bane is a really great dog with everyone; kids, adults, small dogs, big dogs, you name it, he's friends with it. Willow is a bit more reserved, and often waits for my ok (when on a leash) to go up to someone or another dog. When she's off leash she's really mellow, and submissive.

My parents had bred Boston Terriers for 21 years, and we had to keep two of their females separated at all times. We had to rush Gem to the vet on one occasion because of Jackie attacking the poor thing Sad Jackie was just a mean dog all around though, unfortunately.

But, I agree with what everyone has said above. Smile

Love the pictures of the puppies! Very excited for you as well! Smile

I'm super excited too. The two lighter ones will be most likely white (breeder had white before and they were just like this when they were that age)- they are already cream. Not sure about the other two light ones - they are not dark enough to be red, even apricot but too dark to be white. I am excited to see all of them change. There are two black ones too though one looks like will be turning gray so there will be only one back one left. I will post some more photos once I visit the breeder again. Perhaps on Friday :-) All of them are super cute, I saw one yawn - way cuter than the "sneezing baby panda".

Pictures of puppies at 12 days old. The 4 are now all cream. 2 will be most likely Isabella White and 2 pure white since they were already white at birth. I'm really happy I have a chance to see them grow. I will visit them again this weekend.

Not sure about the points yet, hard to tell still but looks like going to be dark. They were just opening their eyes when I was there on Saturday. They are growing super fast and are now very mobile. They were about 1kg each at 12 days! I will take more photos again this weekend to see the changes Smile

The pups are almost 4 weeks there - they are definitely isabella white - gorgeous babies!

This one looks like it has wooly coat - his coat is thicker than that of his siblings...
