Hello all!

My name is Larissa and I'm from Oklahoma. I'm in the process of finding my soulmate!

This site has been incredibly helpful in preparing me for all-things husky. You guys have great advice. Very sincerely, thanks.

Hoping to have some pictures of the little one to show off soon!

Speaking of finding my soulmate....

Does anyone know a reputable, reliable breeder or nice family to adopt/buy husky puppies from?

Looking for a female, black/white, around a month old.

In Oklahoma you're really not going to be able to find a good breeder, the vast majority of "breeders" there and in the states surrounding it are not the kind of breeders you're going to want to go to. They're the kind that breed indiscriminately for the money and don't care about potential health/temperament issues.

If you aren't stuck on getting a puppy, I have a good friend in Moore who runs a Husky rescue. If you're on Facebook, run a search for Heartland Huskies. There are a lot in the 8 month - 2 year old range that get dumped in shelters around there.

By the way, I was stationed at Tinker for 4 years and lived in Moore Smile

What a small world!

Thank you so much for telling me about Heartland Huskies! Now I know where to keep my eye out. I'm glad to hear of fellow Husky lovers in OK.

I'm not completely stuck on having a puppy. I just thought it might be nice to have a bond from the very beginning. I've had a cocker spaniel for most of my life and we got her when she was a puppy so I guess I'm basing my husky desires on that experience. And of course, I want some puppy-hood time too.

I am a little nervous about potentially having a husky that was previously neglected. Any advice? Happen to know any good books on re-acclimating or re-training rescue dogs?

Brian, the guy who runs Heartland Huskies would be a tremendous resource for rehabilitating a neglected/abused dog. Aside from him, I honestly think your best bet would be to poke through threads here and talk to people. A ton of us have rescues, and of those of us who do, a lot of us have dogs with either medical or abuse/neglect issues so we are a wealth of information.

I miss Norman a lot, too. I really liked Norman, it reminded me a lot of home. I grew up in Urbana, IL right by the University of IL. I like the college town feel Smile

Welcome we are in Tulsa, Ok area I have two huskies the male I got because someone was re-homing him at 9 months old. After about 8 months I want a second one we found a real sweet heart at the shelter in Missouri that was about 2 years old. They have bond real well with each other and with me and my husband.

A month is really too young for a puppy to be separated from its mother. If a breeder will sell you a month old puppy, I'd suggest you run the other way. 8 weeks, if not 12, is ideal for better socialization purposes.

That said, I have never bought a puppy, and am new to dogs myself. But, I do have a previously neglected husky that is a sweetheart.  Most rescues have their dogs with fosters, who get a chance to evaluate the personalities of the adoptable dogs, and can tell you how good of a fit a dog will be with your lifestyle.

A GOOD breeder or rescue will be thorough in checking YOU out, to make sure you're going to be a good husky owner. If it's too easy to buy a dog, there's a good chance you're getting a puppy mill or backyard breeder dog, lacking in health/genetic testing and other important factors.

A good breeder will not only tell you they'll take the puppy back if it doesn't work out, they will REQUIRE that you give the dog back to them if at any time you are not keeping the dog anymore. Good breeders don't want their dogs dumped at shelters or otherwise abandoned.

Just my two cents. Don't rush into this. You may have to wait for a litter from a reputable and ethical breeder.
