| I've been mulling this over in my head for a week or two now. In all of the Huskies/Malamutes I encounter I really only see two major personality types. The first and most prevalent is the standard crazy, high prey drive and exuberant sled dog (Ridik, Jack, Kosmo, Coco). The other is a super friendly, mostly laid back, quiet and easy to handle dog (Sioux, Sierra). Those are pretty broad generalizations, I'm not finding the right words to express this. Sioux definitely has some sort of prey drive, but it never gets past what I would call level 2 of 10. He has turned into such a stable , won't step on a spider, adult dog that I really don't have to work at it. The other two, however, require much attention in certain areas. Ridik has that level 7-10 prey drive and it causes Coco's normal level 5 to spike right to 10 along with him. Then there's their willingness to just bolt and take off and Coco's aggression which requires careful management. Sierra and Jack are quite different too, granted Jack is still a pup brain. He will wail and screech and carry on endlessly if Jenn is not within his leash radius. While Sierra is content to just hang out silently until it's time to do something. Those more or less describe the two big types I see in these breeds. With that clumsily said, I'm sure most with two or more sled dogs has one that's just a bit crazier than the other. This is where the color thing comes in. As implied above, I see a lot of these dogs and I've noticed a pattern developing. The darker colored dogs are typically the standard crazy sled dog, and the lighter colored sleds are a lot more relaxed. Of course varying degrees of different drives makes a difference, but when I see two or more sled heads together the lighter one is the chill one. ¿Eh? |

| Hmm... WEIRD! Cause if I had to label it... Koda is the goofball, off-the-wall crazy... and Hailey is the calm, chill one. And the color thing definitely fits our situation!
I have to say though, I think a lot of it has to do with the pack mentality though. For example, separately, I think Koda and Hailey might be equally off-the-wall, but when you put them together, one naturally takes on the more submissive, relaxed role. Adding more to that just adds more to one side or the other, but I guess what I'm saying is, I don't think Hailey's "calmness" would be nearly as pronounced without Koda. I think she'd be a nutter all alone too! _________________ www.itsahuskything.com It's a husky thing... you wouldn't understand. |

| hahahaha let me just get that out of the way. you are right on most of that but Sierra has one hell of a pray drive and Jack is picking up on that. although he is the first one to bolt to the back door if he hears something but Sierra is right behind him. i am hoping the "chill" in Sierra which i love will be Jack in a few years when he is out of the puppy stage, whats that like 5? She is also the oldest in the group and Sioux does have some medical things going on that might make him more quite. i will have to make more of a point to watch at our husky meet ups how everyone is doing. we have 2 R&W's that are 8 and they are chill like Sierra, we also have some young R&W's around jacks age that are crazy. with your thought a white older husky would make the best one to have _________________ |

| Well, Nanuk & Isis are definitely the crazy ones in our household. Mika, being the red, doesn't seem to demand a lot of attention, will sit back and watch when the other two are spazzing out....having said that, she has the highest prey drive. Probably 8/10. (See my post about Mika's poor baby bunny.) Our late Tia was the same way. Red & white, mellow, patient, yet hell on vermin! Mika (&Tia) are the ones I would be most afraid of as far as aggression. When you've seen their innocent faces patiently lure a squirrel, bunny or cat right into their path, then snatch them up, well....whereas Nanuk would run hell-bent after something just for the joy of the chase, yet just as easily be distracted from the chase by a butterfly flitting into his path! I don't know tho, if I would term Mika as "Lighter". She's just not B&W. I think I do see a definite difference between the two colors as far as temperment. |

| Dakota (9 weeks old) is pretty damn laid back. At night when it cools off she gets a little playfull. but thats about it. When we go out, she can't be bothered with other animals. We have 2 indoor cats and sometimes she wants to play with them (even tho the cats do nothing but hiss at her lol). But for the most part, she just looks at them as they walk by. She can't be bothered getting up off the floor to chase them.
I just assumed its the heat.
Another thing. She never really wants to go for walks. I usually have to put the leash on her and drag a bit to get her off the floor. Then when I get her outside. She has her pee. Then wants to run back to the door to come back inside. |

| Pretty typical for a 9 week old puppy You ain't seen nothing yet! The teenage years are the ones to fear. The NILIF training now will help with that though _________________ www.itsahuskything.com It's a husky thing... you wouldn't understand. |
