Hi everyone! I'm AMB (short for Aidan Michael Boyce, or just Aidan Boyce which is my name) a 15 year old hyperactive nut and as you probably can tell I'm new here. I've actually never owned a Husky before due to my age and inexperience, however my family did have several family dogs in the past (a Golden Retriever and a Labrador). Unfortunately they passed away and no animals currently inhabit our house (excluding a small water frog) but I intend to change that. My parents have given me some strict instructions that if I want to get a dog then I need to fund the entire thing by myself, I need to be 100% responsible and in charge, and most importantly, I need experience. It's for that third reason that I joined this site, I was looking around on the internet and this is the first website that seemed to be full of more Husky experts than I could count. I wont be getting a dog for about another 6 months in order to save up enough $$ but until then I figured I could volunteer at the local animal shelter and ask tons of questions on here, arming myself with as much knowledge and experience as possible. I've already decided that I would like to get a Husky if possible, but I've read too many stories about how they were abandoned or put down to let myself be unprepared in the slightest. I don't blame you if you think I'm too young, but I think I can do this with the proper instruction.

Anyways I rambled on a bit too much (a very bad habit of mine) this site looks really nice and I look forward to meeting new people and all that stuff. If you actually read this whole post than you deserve a cookie.

Welcome - there's a LOT of information here so make sure you read through the "stickies" and search a few keywords. Looking forward to watching your journey to a puppy owner in the near future!

Hi and welcome! I was exactly where you are husky-wise about 16 years ago. I don't think anyone is too old or too young to own a husky, as long as you are physically and mentally ready. It sounds like you are working hard to get yourself there. I got my first husky, Tasha when I was 15. She is now approaching her 16th birthday. She is amazing and I love her more than I can even begin to describe!

I don't know exactly where you are in CT, but there is a pretty great husky rescue in Matawan, NJ called the husky house. They would also be a great resource for learning about and maybe even adopting a husky from when the time comes and you have enough saved up for your dogs care. You may not be able to make it down there often, but you might be able to help with adoption events on the weekends, and when the time comes, you may be able to foster/adopt from them. Or, you could even work with local businesses or groups in your town to do a fundraising/adoption event with the husky house. Btw, I'm not associated with them, just a suggestion of a husky specific rescue group close to you.

Rescues are amazing for learning from about what to expect from your husky. They have seen it all and can really work with you to prepare you, your home, and your family for a husky. Good luck and ask lots of questions!

She raises and shows siberians, you might want to get in touch with her to see if she needs any extra help around the kennel. http://www.nandosibes.com/ I would suggest calling though, she really doesn't like email much. Funny story, her caps lock was on and she didn't know how to turn it off for a while and every time she emailed me it was in all caps. I thought she was yelling at me until I asked her about it, and she said she didn't know how to turn it off.

I think the way you are going about this is great.
I hope you find the information you need and that this search and research will help you love the husky more.

One way to "save" money would be to check out your local husky rescue sites. They alot of times have a fee with the shots/fixing/ etc included. Plus I would think a young adult husky may have less expenses than a pup (more vet checks, changing out collars harness, pups toys vs adult toy). Rescues may have volunteer spots there too. But the shelter is a great place to help all dogs.
