| Ok so i tried to train my husky when he was small giving him food rewards. He learned to sit , to wait for me to give him the command until he can start to eat , to jump on command , to give me his pawn (the basic stuff) and then one day he just stopped listening to me and i don't know why. Now he is 2 years and 3 months old and I want to start training him again from 0. Teach him everything that he needs to know and i think it is going to be way harder now because he is not a puppy anymore. So could you please give me some tips and hints ? I read a lot those days about husky training but everywhere I found it wrote about how to train him when his a puppy...
yesterday i tried to teach him to stay around me without a leash , i wanted him to run around a little because i cant keep up with him running all day . I got tired so I decided that I should try at night first when there are no people in the park (00:00 am) so i let him go,he stayed around me and my friends , he came when I called him and we all played with him and told him compliments, I did this like 3 times then he ran away and started playing with other dogs in the park (street dogs) it toked me around 45-60 minutes to catch him because he stayed around the dogs and when they ran from me he ran with them and if i would got to close they were trying to bite me but eventually I got my hands on him.
I am from Romania and there are lots of street dogs and my husky always starts to run towards them and wants to play with them and it is really annoying when i want to walk him and really hard to let him off the leash and i am afraid not to lose him so please help me.
These will be the stuff that I want to teach him and in this order :
1.Sit 2.Stay 3.To stop pulling when I walk him 4.To stop jumping on people 5.To stop running towards every dog he sees 6.To stop stopping everywhere to pee 7.Recall 8.Walk off the leash
I need help doing this especially because I cant invest anything in this training, so i cant buy any delicious kind of rewards or any items that would help me train me.
Is my list of stuff to teach him good ? is it a good order ? do i have to add anything that would make my life and my dogs life easier and funner ?
P.S. : this is just for my curiosity , can you train a Siberian Husky to bark and bite on command ? As much as i read over the internet you cant...Is it true ? |

| Personally I feel like it's easier to teach an adult rather than a puppy since you are only fighting Husky short attention span, rather than Husky and puppy attention span Huskies are a prey driven, independent minded, and spirited breed. Combine that with no previous consistent training and you have your situation resulting in you running around for an hour chasing your dog! Generally- they don't do well off leash. There are a very few who have the right personality and drive and are capable of being off leash (in an area that isn't enclosed) but it requires a lot of foundation training and constant upkeep. Simply praising your dog for being around you isn't enough of a reinforcement when the dog has distractions like a group of new dogs running around. For the safety of your dog I really would urge you to keep the dog on a leash. You can purchase a long line which allows the dog more freedom without being able to take off and ignore your recall. A long line can be made out of rope, you don't need to buy one if you can't afford it. What motivates your dog? Does he enjoy his food? Does he like specific toys? Does he like to tug? In order for the dog to want to learn and participate you need to find something motivating. It doesn't have to be food- one of my dogs will go to the end of the earth for this stupid plastic ball with a handle. The best way to get any training done is to do it consistently... If he's only getting walked every 2 days (from your other post) teaching him to not pull on the leash is going to be difficult. You're fighting his energy level and inconsistent training in that scenario. That is also probably adding to him wanting to stop and pee everywhere. My advice for you would be to get into a routine with your dog. Dogs love and thrive on routine. Walks in the morning and night. Reinforcing and teaching basic manners that you want to see (such as not pulling on the leash, not jumping up on people, sitting for meals.. ect. ect.) Huskies aren't good at being protection dogs, they are very human friendly. Without hiring a skilled and trained personal protection K9 trainer I would highly suggest NOT trying to "home teach" your dog to exhibit those very un-Husky attributes. You will more than likely end up with a dog who decides what/when to bite which is an accident waiting to happen. _________________ Force Free Training ThreadCheyenne, Mishka, Mickey, Rodeo, & Odin Are you a Husky owner in South Florida?! | Welcome to the forum!
As far as the training goes, Huskies being off leash is a very controversial topic. We have a few members who have been able to do it, but by and large Huskies aren't very trustworthy off leash. I honestly would recommend you not do that for the safety of your dog.
For the rest, find something that your dog really likes that you can use as a training treat. When we taught Ghost "sit", we would hold the treat in one hand directly over her head while giving the "sit" command and hand signal (we give our dogs both verbal and hand signal commands). As soon as your dog's butt hits the ground, say "sit" one more time, then give the treat and praise like crazy. Repeat this process during multiple short training sessions per day, and your dog will have that command down very quickly. It honestly took us one training class to teach Ghost sit.
Stay is another easy one, but it does take a bit more time than sit. Put your dog in either a sit or a down (lay down), and then hold your hand up and give the command "stay". The first few times you do this, only make your dog stay for 2-3 seconds and then give the treat and praise. As you practice stay, make your dog stay for longer and longer periods of time before giving the treat and praise. Huskies are pretty smart, he should learn stay fairly quickly.
Pulling is extremely common with Huskies. A very easy way to train your dog to not pull is to either stop walking and stand still, or turn around and go the other way when your dog starts to pull. This requires consistency and patience, but if you do this every single time your dog pulls on the leash, he will get the idea that he will get to walk a lot further if he doesn't pull. Another method is to hold a high value treat, like a stick of cheese, next to you while you walk. The dog will be really interested in the treat, and will want to hang back in the hopes of getting the treat. Give him treats from time to time, and he will get the idea.
The running towards dogs can be mitigated by using a leash, though your dog will likely still pull if he is on the leash. We taught Ghost "on by" to use when we are walking, and when I give that command she knows to keep moving. She's still really tempted to pull to go meet new dogs and people, but she also knows that she needs to ignore them when I tell her on by.
With the peeing thing, is he neutered? Neutered dogs will be less inclined to mark things, but again "on by" will help for when you take him on walks.
For recall, randomly call him at different times from different parts of your house, and when he comes give him a treat and praise him like crazy. You can also use a really long lead outside, and do the same thing with calling him and then treating him when he comes to you.
I hope this helps! _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | Great post blueeyedghost ! We just rescued a 2 year old Huskey and everything you hit on is everything I want to teach him. He knows how to sit and stay, leash pulling isn't to bad but I think there is room for improvement. He does get over excited when other dogs are around. The only other thing you didn't touch on is how to stop them from jumping on people. He does do that a lot. Do you have any tips on how to stop that behavior? Again great post! |

| I walk him every 2 days because i am still a kid and i still like to sleep and go to places that i cant take my dog with me but ill try to get a schedule going (to be honest i got no idea what to put in my schedule) if u guys have any schedule of ure own and want to share it would be great What is "on by" and how do i teach him that ? ( I am romanian dont really know everything in english) He is not neutered. Forgot to say : Everytime my dog sees food in other places than home i can barely keep him beside me,he starts pulling as hard as he can, jumping , doing anything to get that food. There were lots of cases that my dog jumped and stole the food from my hand or my friends hands or if somebody passes by with a bag that haves food in it and he smells it he tries to steal it. a similar thing happened yestarday but not with food. A gipsy came and stretched his arm to me holding something that he wanted to sell,my dog stayed a little and then suddenly he jumped and tried to bite that guys hand or grab what he was holding,i dont know because i was not really paying attention to the gipsy but my dog never bite anybody. I would also like to know how to calm him down. I made him a space just for him in the yard and when i want to enter it (it haves a door and fence and roof and all that stuff) he starts to jump all over the place and tries to get out to run away. How do I stop that? Another thing that i forgot to say is that when he was small for like a year i usually toked my dog and his friend , a really nice and big pitbull to the stadium and let them both free and my dog never ran away or anything like that, he used to play with the pitbull or stay with me if he got bored of the pitbull but he never got to far away even if there were people or other dogs on the stadium (its a really sucky stadium, just a open space with grass and a goal. Here are some pictures of them over there (they were really cute) |

To stop jumping, we give a firm "off" and then a gentle nudge with our knee to get across that jumping is not appropriate. If they jump on someone else, we either tug on the leash or collar (if not leashed) while giving the "off" command. Our foster pit mix can't seem to get that through her head with those corrections though, so we're about to start using a pet corrector. The pet corrector is a can of compressed air that lets out a burst of air and startles the dog. We've had huge success using it with our super reactive cocker spaniel, and you can find them at some pet stores as well as amazon.com. - Rami wrote:

He is not neutered.
For someone who is not a native English speaker, you are doing really well with it. You actually write better than quite a few of our native English speaking members, so whoever your teachers are in school they are doing a great job and you are obviously doing your part with your studies. On by basically means "ignore whatever it is that has your attention and keep moving". We mostly taught it to Ghost for when we were biking or roller blading with her, but it comes in handy on walks as well. We give the command, and she just keeps walking. Does that help? You should really look into neutering him, it will actually help a lot with some of his issues as well as preventing accidental litters of puppies. I know you have mentioned money being an issue, and I don't know how things work in Romania, but when I was your age I earned a lot of money doing odd jobs for people. I would mow lawns, shovel snow, and babysit mostly. I also delivered newspapers and worked as a lifeguard. I saw you mention that most people don't want to hire a teenager, do you guys have any jobs there that are typically held by younger people? Here, a lot of teenagers work as grocery store clerks, waiters, lifeguards, and fast food workers. If you are particularly good at a subject in school (and I'd say your English qualifies), I know people who have made good money tutoring. I hope all this helps, and please don't hesitate to ask more questions, especially if you don't quite understand something. _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | Thank you for explaining it to me. I will try to train the dog when I take him to walks because at home he does what I tell him the basic "stay" and "sit" commands but when there are people around he never listens. my english is good because 7 years ago I left Romania and moved to Jordan for 3 years and i studied in English 2 years and 1 year in Arabic. Was pretty hard but I got the hang of it and now i am really pleased of my self for knowing English,Romanian,Arabic at the age of 17 I tried to offer my services of tutoring but cant seem to find people to send their kids to me.Romania is kind of a poor country to and people would rather shovel the snow themselves , didn't really see people in my town to own a nice lawn and mow it. There is no see or anything near me to try to get a job as a lifeguard even if i toked swimming lessons for 2-3 years and took place in swimming competitions , i actually love swimming , its my favorite sport to do |

| Your knowledge of those three languages will serve you well in life. Language is an extremely valuable skill to have, unfortunately a lot of people in the United States don't realize that. I took French and German in school, but it's been so long since I've used either I only remember a little. Keep looking for jobs, you will find one eventually. I'm reasonably familiar with Romania's history and I know you guys are still recovering from Ceausescu's leadership, I just wasn't sure how your current economy was. I went to college with a Romanian exchange student, and we would talk quite a bit about your country. Okami is gorgeous, by the way _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | Thank you, I will try to invest more time in looking for a job. Right now i am trying to get a interview for a Bartender position . The country is nice but the economy sucks,a minimal pay over here is around 200-250 euro a month and it looks like every jobber haves minimal pay these days... |

| Good luck with the interview! I know at least here bartending can be a really fun job. I had to laugh though, because here you have to be 21 to be a bartender and my first thought was "wait, he's only 17!". One of the many differences between our countries. _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword.
