| Greetings everybody!!! I just adopted a 1-2 year old Husky/Border Collie mix, definitely mostly Husky. He is neutered and full of energy. He is mostly crate trained because when I first set it up he went straight inside and was very happy. I have come to find out that he is not house broken and he loves to mark his favorite smells in the house. I understand that getting mad at him is wrong because he doesn't know any better and it is my fault for not catching him in the act. Also I know not to yell at him for it might scare him. Has anyone had success with a Potty training/ indoor marking regiment for an older puppy. If so I would love some advise and like to thank you in advance. |

| Hi and welcome to the forum ... and you probably picked the worst day of the week to ask a question, most of the people seem to disappear on weekend. A few of us older folks hang around but I'll be surprised if you see more than two or three comments before Monday.
You're right on one point though, if you can't "catch him in the act" it's useless to get mad at him later - he only knows you're angry but can't put his marking / peeing as the reason.
I think the best solution to your problem is one that's given here often. When he's out of his crate at home (which presumes you are as well, otherwise he'd be crated?) put him on a leash and tie the leash to you. As soon as you see that leg start to come up (and since he's tied to you, you will see it, right?) give a verbal cue (eh-eh, no, etc [though "no" isn't good, he doesn't know what you're saying no about if he even knows what "no" means]) and then take him outside.
If it's strictly marking, clap your hands - anything to distract him from marking - repeat ad nauseum until he gets the idea that marking is forbidden. Again take him out so he gets the idea that marking the fire hydrant (or tree or bush) is okay, marking the couch isn't.
This, btw, generally works for any behaviour in house that you need to discourage. NILIF (nothing in life is free) - and the price of freedom in house is to not leave a puddle trail around. _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |

| I think no is a good word to use. Doesn't matter if he knows it not. It's strong and sharp. Whatever word you go with though always use it. Don't switch between words.
Get yourself a good enzyme cleaner and do as al already said. Keep him in your sight at all times he's out of the crate and correct him if he hikes that leg, then get him outside. Any spot he's marked inside clean with the enzyme spray.
I adopted my male at 3 years old. He had never been fixed and never set foot inside a house. No age is too old to potty train. He actually learned really fast with only a couple corrections before the act. _________________ |
