separation anxiety - Separation Anxiety and constant crying and barking Empty
PostSubject: Separation Anxiety and constant crying and barking   separation anxiety - Separation Anxiety and constant crying and barking EmptyThu Apr 11, 2013 3:18 pm

I am pretty sure plenty have had issues with separation anxiety and I'd like to know the best methods of solving it.
My male pup is 8 weeks old and it is generally obedient and submissive, until we put it into a crate. We lures it in by putting food in the cage and we would close the door behind it when it follows. Then it would keep crying and moaning, even if a person is in the room. I ignored it for a long period of time, as advised by my other friends who had dogs. And I was determined to keep it in until it grows quiet. It NEVER grows quiet, I am losing my patience and I am more than willing to invest in a anti-barking shock collar.
Please help, we give it a LOT of attention and love, but it just doesnt seem to learn. We've tried to crate training it for 2 days, and each session results in the same fashion, it grows quiet for a mere 10 seconds and I let it out in hope that it's leaning at last. But the next crate training session would immediately prove otherwise.

You don't say how old this pup was when you got it but if its 8 weeks now you should have just gotten him/her. It's a baby! It's used to being with its Mom and siblings! Of course it's not happy being alone in a crate. It's going to fuss and cry. My Balon took 2 1/2 weeks to stop "screaming" in his crate at night. Luckily little Loki only took a few days!

You need to continue to have patience, and lots of it, plus a good set of earplugs!
Very Happy Never take out the pup when it is crying. Wait for that second of quiet to remove him from the crate. Are you taking the pup out for potty breaks? Make sure he is played with and tired when you put him in there. Basically you have to ignore the whining. Sure it can be really annoying, but if you want a well behaved dog you must do it. Honestly 2 days is nothing! It may take weeks to have a pup who accepts the crate. You don't say where the crate is but it should be where he can see you most of the time. Don't shut him him off somewhere, perhaps if he is bad at night try placing the crate in your room. You can also try covering the crate with a crate cover, some dogs really like the more den like feel, I know my lab does! I have a friend who cut a piece of plywood to exactly fit the top of her pups crate and he stopped whining!

A 8 week old pup is way to young for a shock collar! Just don't make a big fuss when placing him in his crate, and if you know that he has been fed, watered, and had a potty break, in he goes and let him be. I also place a chewing toy in the crate to give mine something to do. Make sure it is an age appropriate toy with no parts that he could chew off, like a kong or puppy nylabone!

good luck!

I agree with everything June said. At 8 weeks old "it's" just a baby. It's going to take a lot of patience on your end. It's like having a baby in the house. Please please please don't even consider putting a shock collar on "it". Poor thing is just getting accustomed to new surroundings. You might want to check out the training threads. You'll learn a lot of good tips. Good luck.

Oh, is "it" a male or female? What's his/her name?

Also keep in mind that an excited, anxious, scared, alert etc. puppy going into a crate is going to at least stay that way in there, and chances are these states will escalate.

If you can get your puppy tired and calm and quiet prior to going in the crate............you get the picture.

Good luck.
