| Sorry I didn't know the situation I would continue doing as you are doing then and when you see her going or sniffing around to go pick her up and take her to her pee pads. When she goes, do as you have been doing and give her lots and lots of praise. At night when you guys are sleeping or when you are gone I would definitely crate her to help control the accidents... remember to set an alarm and still take her out every few hours throughout the night. When you guys are there and available though, I would continue to do as you are doing because you don't want to isolate her in her crate when you guys are there because as pups they need that socialization and comfort that their humans are giving them. So I would say crate when unattended and other than that just keep an eye out, lots of praise and keep doing what you're doing |

| I'm new at this, but what seems to be working pretty well with me is just constantly watch him and take him outside at least once an hour. If I see him going in the house I yell NO and immediately take him outside. The more often you take him out, the less he'll go in the house |

| Well would you believe it?! Woke up this morning and not a single accident. The amount of pride i felt for Molly was probably a bit much, but considering how bad she has been during the night i feel like it was a huge night for her. I suppose maybe there is hope yet! |

| Just put a deposit down for a pup. My wife and I work from 7:30 - 4:30. Is this going to make potty training difficult/impossible given the long time away? It is possible we can bring the puppy out at lunch, but that is the best we can do. Thoughts? |

| Well due to the long hours ur out from the pup theres no question potty training will be very difficullt. Theres nobody to correct the behaviour for half the day and with a ypung pup holding it in is out of the question as its impossible for pups to hold it. Something like an hoyr per month old i think?! U should def try get someone to check in on him/her as the poor thing will be so miserable on its own for so long. Sorry i couldnt give u more happy reply. After the pups 12wk vacc and kennel cough vacc u can enroll him/her in doggu daycare which is great for not only keeping ur dog company when u work but learning omortant socialising skills. Its just a case of getting ur pup to that age without leaving it alone for too long os gonna be your problem. Wish i could have been.more help. Sorry havent posted in a while been.busy, but will post updated pics of Molly soon. They grow so fast :-) Thanks Molly and Darren |

| My pup seems to have figured out that going pee outside = good, but she will poo in her crate and smash it and get it all over and i feel like its hard predicting when she has to go #2. We just got a crate divider and the first night, no accidents! it was a miracle. Then the next day, i took her out and she pooped and i put her back in and she pooed again 20 min later in her crate! I feed her at the same times every day yet every day yet her inner poo schedule makes no sense to me. Any thoughts on how to get her to stop pooing in crate? This poor dog has to keep having baths and baby wiped b/c she just makes a big gross mess if it helps to know, she's 3 months old and gets fed hill science diet. sometimes we hang out in my yard FOREVER just trying to get one to come out but she wont do it. : ( |

| reading through this thread has actually cleared many questions i had.
However, i had one more.
Koa pees outside when he's at my house. He sleeps in the room with me and not one single accident. Koa is good in telling me he needs to either pee or poop. He begins to whine , and when it gets to the point where he has to go, which i don't usually let it get there, he whines much more louder.
The problem here is that whenever he's NOT in my house , ( in the car specifically) , he pees wherever he wants, on the seat, the floor, even on the arm rest divider!
Does anyone have any suggestions or explanation for this? |

I thought I was alone. Koda, will not let us know when he has to pee. He is just walking through his area in the kitchen and pees as he is walking. He was checked for bladder infection at age 12 weeks and is now 18 weeks. We take him out 20 min after he eats or drinks any water. And right after any rough play. He holds his pee from 11:00 pm until 5:30 am in his crate. He is only having about 3 accidents a week and he is 4 1/2 months. I am hoping he will get better as he ages. Also, never pooped in the house. We follow all guidlines in house training. Any other suggestions. I am thinking about tethering. |

| I have recently gotten a siberian husky and she is just about 4 months old and will not got to the bathroom outside no matter how long I stay outside with her,but as soon as we come in the house and i take her leash off she will go right there on the spot.I take her around other dogs on a regular basis hoping she will learn from them but she will still hold it untill we come inside.I have been using the potty pads and placing a used one outside so she has her scent but now she wont go on those either she will go beside it. Please any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.Thank you. |

| This is the biggest reason why puppy pads are not a good potty training tool IMO. They learn that it is okay to pee in the house. Are you crate training? |

| When you take her outside to go potty do you go to the same spot every time? Also, when you are out there don't walk around...stand in that same spot and she gets the length of the leash and that is it. It can be extremely frustrating (I know, I went through it) but you HAVE to stand there until she goes no matter how long it takes. Make sure to use "go potty" or whichever word of your choice repeatedly. I don't recommend using puppy pads for outside dogs, for my chihuahua on the other hand who was an inside dog..pads were the best thing ever made! |

| I think this was brought up but not really addressed earlier (if it was, I'm sorry, I'm multitasking like a mad man at the moment). I live in an apartment with 3 other people, one of which isn't overly fond of Vegeta. So most times I have Vegeta in my room with me with the door shut. He doesn't pee nor poop in my room and knows sitting by the door means he gets to go out. The problem is when we are out in the living room. Whenever I leave my door open so he has free roam of the apartment or I am sitting on the couch watching tv he always just goes in the apartment (in the same general area for that matter). I try and take him out whenever I see him walking towards that area but if I'm not quick he just goes. Do you have any advice for this? I think my main problem is that we aren't out there frequently and as such he doesn't get tons of exposure to situations where he can learn. |

| I have some questions about brand-new puppy and potty training. With a possible 8-10 week old puppy, while I’m home, of course it will be bringing puppy out every hour. I don’t mind interrupting my sleep for a while to do so over night as well if need be (though I hope that won’t have to last long!) The problem is that I do work. I’ll be gone 4 hours in the morning, back at lunch to take care of puppy, and then gone again for 4 hours in the afternoon. My plan is to block off the kitchen and have a puppy pad there for when I’m at work until the point when the puppy is able to pretty well hold it for that time and I’ve gotten him/her well on the way with crate-training. I don’t want the puppy in the crate before its really able to mostly hold it for that long because I don’t want it having to sit in its crate with the accidents. I know others have said on this thread that puppy pads aren’t great because they teach the dog that it’s ok to go inside, but I’m not quite sure what else I can do in this case. Does this seem like a reasonable plan or does anyone have better suggestions? |

| I have a similar schedule, although I couldn't go home midday, I had a dog walker instead. I brought my pup home when he was 9 weeks, and took the first week off work. The second week, I worked half days. By the end of the second week he could go 4-5 hours in his crate. When I went back to work, I hired a dog walker to come take him out for quick potty breaks, feed him, and spend time playing with him. It worked really well. He only had one accident in his crate ever, and it was because the dog walker was late. He was potty trained by 14 weeks and would only have an accident if I couldn't get my shoes on fast enough to get him outside. |

| Unfortunately, I don't have vacation time so taking a week off or half days won't be an option for me. I'm fortunate that my schedule is flexible a bit and that I live very close so I can go home at lunch time, but that's it. |

| I would try the crate before you do the pee pads. If he/she has an accident, then go for it. No bones about it, pee pads will prolong your house breaking so I would use them as an absolute last resort. |

| So new puppy is home, first day with him. i make sure he goes potty and poop before we come inside after the long car ride home. After a little while inside he tries to pee. I'm able to catch him in the act and rush him outside. Outside, he's not interested in going potty. First, he spent some 20 minutes playing. Finally I think he went. He at least did a half squat type pose that he held for a few seconds and the leaves seemed to be wet afterwards. The second time he started to wee in the house, I caught him in the act and rushed him outside again. For the first few minutes he played again, and then he lied down and went to sleep. The next time I tried to bring him out to pee he immediately curled up and went to sleep. I'm bringing him to the same spot each time. I'm hoping this is just a first day excitement/learning, but any suggestions for a dog that plays or sleeps rather than goes potty? |

| My puppy is 8 weeks old. He would squat and when I would catch him he is already done. It seems like he will pee maybe 1 to 2 tablespoons about 8 times or so a day. So when I take him outside when I catch him he will not go, we will spend about 30 minutes outside so we will go back inside. He will not go potty again for another hour and a half to two hours. We cant crate train him because he will whine from hours on end and our crate is an extra large I believe. Any suggestions? |

| So last week was Klaus' first week with us, he is only 10 weeks old and I know he has a long way to go. He sleeps from about 10:30pm to 5:30am without waking us or accidents in the crate. My boyfriend and I both work 8 hour days, but only overlap 4 days a week so he is only crated like that 4 days a week. It will be about 3-4 hour intervals because someone lets him out during lunch. Last week he only had one accident in his crate while we were gone. All of a sudden this week he peed both times he was crated yesterday and today.
I'm not sure what the set back is. He also would willingly go in his crate last week, now I have to put treats in and shut the door because after trying to tire him out, wait, and coax him in there after an hour I'm late to work. Also, when getting him to potty outside he takes his time, wants to play, and even after he has went potty and played outside I cannot get him back in for the life of me. It's a game of chase to get him back inside!
We started taking him out on the leash the past two days now and he doesn't like to go on the leash, but I'd really like for him to learn to go first, then he can be let of the leash to play. Can anyone tell me if we're taking the correct action here? |

| Yes, you are doing just fine. It just takes time. I was going to suggest taking him out on the leash, then you said that you have been, so just keep going with that. Potty time and play time are separate. Try and keep one area of the yard the business spot, then unleash for play when he is done in another part of the yard.
If you catch him in the act of doing business inside the crate or just in the house, stomp your foot on yhe ground and shout "No!" Then say something along the lines of "potty outside!" Then immediately take them tothe spot, even if he doesn't have to go. You will get your message across firmly, and tell him his boundries. |

| Thanks Lucy, he definitely hates going out on the leash so I just wanted to make sure it was okay to do so. I'm pretty sure he was protesting yesterday. He went all day without a poop, and he kept whining in the house and was very anxious so I knew he had to go. Eventually he went on the leash, but now getting him back in the house with the leash on he acts terrified. Doesn't even want to go up the back steps. I'm just worried he is going to negatively associate the two. |

| My boy was already excellent in doing his business outside…but then he caught Parvo Once I saw him rejecting food and treats for a whole day I took him to the vet the next day and boom. I knew the boy wasn't right. Vet said good thing I brought him with early signs. He survived it...two days in the vet hospital on IV and a week on meds at home He's looking great and stools look better than ever. We have not let him walk outside for almost two weeks now. I have him inside in a gated spot with a potty pad. Fortunately he does do his business on the potty pad all the time. So it worries me when he's finally 100% with his shots complete if he will get back in the flow of going outside to potty. Today he is 10 weeks old |

I'm thinking it was at the first vet I took him to. I made the mistake of letting him down for a little bit while in the room. At the time I didn't know that was a big mistake. Shortly after my boy started to look too calm and slept for most of the day and I tried to feed him but nothing. Then the following morning he rejected food and I took him to a different and closer vet. I can't wait to be able to safely take him out again. |
