| Hi everyone!
Currently my puppy is being fed Eukanuba from their breeder. We will get that as well for a little bit in order to switch him over to something healthier. (Eukanuba is three stars on DFA and we want something that's 4.5+.)
The kind of dog food I'm looking for: - Something with fish oils to help his coat be shiny and healthy (egg also works) - Absolutely no meal with "by-product" - Little amount of grains (no corn at all) - Something with very easy to digest vegetables
We want the dog food not only to keep him healthy and help give him a high energy level (although I doubt he'll need 'help' with that,) but something that keeps his coat beautiful. Something that breeders would feed their dogs to keep them healthy and looking great!
Unfortunately the Fiance and I don't feel Raw would be beneficial to us because we wouldn't have the time or ability to feed him raw while traveling nor would we have the time to every day. Although I feel that's really healthy, we can not do raw so please don't suggest that.
The dog foods I've been considering: - TimberWolf Organics - Nature's Logic - Taste of the Wild
I am interested in knowing if anyone uses the above brands, or a brand that is equally as healthy. If you use or used it, what was your experience?
Also, a question: Would feeding him similar but slightly different varieties of the dog food keep him healthier or looking his best? I have heard once a dog gets very used to the diet that his coat loses the shine or gains weight. Since I don't have any experience with this I'd love feedback!
Thanks for the help in advanced! |

| Only had some experience with Taste of the Wild, got some samples from them awhile back but Roxy didn't like any of the flavors at all. |

| I feed TOTW and mine do great on it. Their coats are very nice. Orijen is one of the best IMO but i just can't afford it right now.
TOTW gets 4.5 on dogfoodadvisor |

| Use TOTW Pacific Salmon. Bodhi loves it. His coat is shiny and beautiful. |

| Wow thank you everyone for the feedback!
Bad or good, it's nice to know there's so many people that have heard of and tried TotW. I'll ask for some samples from them--thanks for that!
And thanks Michael! I suppose that would take care of the fish oil I'm looking for. TimberWolf has a both salmon and herring in theirs, so that's one reason I wanted to try theirs, too. |

| I do give Bodhi two fish oil caps a day too.
My vet (who used to own a husky) told me that for thousands of years, siberians' ancestors ate just fish, frozen in winter, fresh in summer. He said they need a fish based diet.
I learned this when my first husky developed ZRD (zinc deficiency). It's a skin condition that looks like hot spots and dull coat. My vet said I could give the dog either fish in his diet or a zinc supplement every day.
I started giving him a small can of tuna with his kibble. Now I wish I had known more about effects of mercury in tuna... This was before TOTW. |

| I didn't realize at first that they truly had a fish based diet. It surprised me the first time Roxy flipped out when I opened a can of tuna, or when I was eating any other fish for dinner. She LOVES fish. I do give her cans of tuna from time to time, more of a treat than anything else. |

| We sampled TimberWolf and Chili loved it! It just wasn't available at many of the stores closer to us, so that was a pain. |

| That makes sense, Sam. I think we would have to order it online every time we needed more, to be honest. It seems easy now but it might end up being a pain in the butt later.
I never would have thought about Mercury being in Tuna, thank you for bringing that up! I didn't know that, that is what they used to live off of, either! That's so cool!
I really want to go with TimberWolf because of the fish in it, but we could always give him a substitute if needed.
Michael, what did you mean by a "cap"? Do they have pills / an actual dose for dogs to give them? Would we buy fish oil in say, a grocery store, and than give it to him?
Thanks all! |

| Chelsi, I think there is a discussion about the merits of different kinds of fish oil on here somewhere.
I give Bodhi a 1200 mg capsule at breakfast and at diner. It's Nature Made brand, and purified to remove mercury. I heard something on NPR about cancer in dogs and how prevalent it is. My husky #2 died of cancer, so I'm trying to be be better with what goes in Bodhi.

| I fed timberwolf years ago when my first girl was a pup and she did fine on the food. It was difficult to get once the small store by us that sold it closed up. |

| I feed TOTW. I had wanted to feed my pups the best, I didn't care about price. So I went with Blue Buffalo as I had always seen it advertised as the best food and natural ingredients - except my pups did horrible on it! I know a couple people feed it successfully, but Cloud absolutely hated it and Yuki had horrible runs for over a month. I finally caved and switched to TOTW after hearing the reviews, and I have to say I love it. Yuki is on the Pacific Stream puppy salmon diet, Cloud is on the Buffalo adult diet, and Cloud actually *eats* his food instead of picking at it. I'd highly recommend it |

| Thank you everyone for all of the help! I think I've made my decision--I'll be going for TotW. I was dissuaded about TimberWolf due to the amount of times they've changed factories. They also filed for Bankruptcy in 2009 so I'm not sure if someone else bought the company, or what...? But I just felt uneasy about those things--not to mention it's not even available on their Website right now, and the closest place to buy for me is an hour and a half away. (Any website I found it wasn't available. I thought that was kind of crazy.) Nature's Logic has Fish Meal in it. This had me worried about Ethoxyquin, even though it would have been in very small amounts. I still don't want pesticides in my puppy's food! No matter how small. TotW has "Ocean Fish Meal". Customer Service from TotW did say that this fish meal does not contain Ethoxyquin. However; I do know that companies (when Ethoxyquin is added before manufacturing) they do not have to say that Ethoxyquin is within the kibble. With as many people that reported using TotW and that it worked, I decided for that over NL. Thanks everyone for all of the help! Looks like our baby will be on TotW too! And Michael, thanks for that info on fish oil! I will be finding the other thread too! I want his coat to be all shiny and healthy. |
