just after abit of advice please regarding my soon to be 2 year old. i just want to know what the best way of helpin them grow up together is.

my son adores her and runs past me and the rest of my family when he comes in to give her a cuddle.
i am teaching him to be gentle with her, he tells her no to his toys but i make sure he lets her have her toys.

my concern although im not sure wether i should be or not is their playing and im pretty sure it is playing.

my son will run aroud the room which gets akira excited and quite understandable
akira gets abit yappy but i know its only excitment because she is the same when she is chasing her toys around but
i would like advice regarding her bitting / and pouncing.

i grew up with a doberman and a gsd and they were mega loving and soft towards me even given the fact i was so small and i just want to make sure akira turns out then same with my son.

do i stop her from bitting/nipping and it is nothing nasty i guess its similar to bite inhabition she would learn from her litter mates and she will have a little pounce very playfull but i am unsure of weither to leave them to play or set some bounderies on my sons behalf he is not bothered by it at all he laughs his head of which gets akira more excited.

i just want to make sure they grow up enjoying each other like i did with my dogs.

I would put her in time out any time she nips your son, otherwise she could continue and progress. Hopefully someone can give better advice than that though xD

I agree with the previous poster and will add to do the same to your son when he gets too rough.
(I only say that because when my 2 year old and the pup get too rough, it's usually my daughter that instigated it. Wink )

my son is actually pretty good he knows what gentle means and on the few occasions he has been abit rough he has been disciplined and seems to be understanding really well so its not him i am so much worried about it is akira.

what do you mean by time out should i take her away from the playing and would it help if i make her sit during play to try and keep it at a lower level. or would it not make much difference if its coming from me and not my son?

thanks for the replies

Do you have any babygates? I would take a small area, like maybe the kitchen, and block it off with a gate. Everytime she nips, put her in the kitchen alone for a 'time out'. If she whines or cries, ignore her. After about 5 minutes, or once shes silent, let her back out to play again.

i have a small area gated off at my back door where she is going toilet on a pad ive got her going there on her own now and she is doing really good in a sort space of time im not sure if putting her in there as a punishment would discourge her to go toilet on her own as she may associate going through the gate with getting locked in and i only shut it on her when i know she needs to go the toilet and i am always stood their so she doesnt feel like i have left her and so i am able to instantly praise for doing her thing in the right place.
the only other place is her crate which obviously is a no! no!
and the kitchen is quite large so i dont think she would feel punished as i only let her in there when i a, able to fully supervise her and i think she would quite enjoy the freedom of the kitchen and no doubt find somewhere to toilet.

obviously it would be myself removing akira from the playing so would me telling her no to the jumping and nipping not have the same effect.
