Aggression in a puppy Empty
PostSubject: Aggression in a puppy   Aggression in a puppy EmptySun Mar 10, 2013 4:52 pm

Hello,

We have had our puppy for a few weeks. He is 12 almost 13 weeks old now. We've not had any issues with him really, until today and we are at a loss. We are experienced dog owners and have had a husky before (but she was a girl). But, I've never really had to deal with aggression and I am not sure what to do. I have an 8 and 2 year old and I can't risk this being a continuous problem. He and my oldest daughter were playing in our yard, he was trying to chew on a rock or stick something and my daughter tried to pull him away from it...he turned on her so fast, he looked and sounded like a badger! He bit her on her side and hand pretty bad for a puppy. We aren't even thinking of getting rid of him, we just are at a loss. I don't know if he thinks of her as another puppy or what. I know this is a jumbled post, I am just a little shaken up. If he had done that to my 2 year old...or even someone else's child it could have been really bad. Any advice is appreciated!

This sounds like resource guarding/ food aggression type of thing. Luckily it's still a pup so you can nip this in the but now. I'd use the search on the left and search for guarding. It's quite common for dogs to be protective of toys and to bite at people trying to take them away. It's only natural. He just needs to learn that no matter what it is he has to give it up to a human. You're not alone in this, my Cocker Spaniel was HORRIBLE able guarding, especially when it was something he knew he wasn't supposed to have (he loved socks, underwear, toilet paper, you name it).
