| Subject: IS my dog a husky? Fri Mar 15, 2013 7:08 am | |
Ok so about a year ago when me and my significant other got our first home with the room and land to suit a dog i began looking for a husky because that had been my dream. I started with the registered breeders in the area, I quickly dismissed this course for several reasons, one the price, while i have wanted a husky more than anything since i was a child paying 1500 or more for one was out of my price range, second the only two breeders in the state had application processes that where as grueling as adopting a human child and while i understand the need for that especially with all the homeless and abused animals out there there where in fact several things that they required that i did not have yet Mostly though i didn't care bout the registration. I wanted a pet not an investment. So after much searching i found an add for husky puppies. I had done a lot of research on the AKC standard for the breed as i had never really seen a pure bred husky in person and when i went to see the puppies i also saw the parents. To this day i have no doubt in my mind both are huskies, However recently my girl kiska just turned 1 and recently she blew out her coat and it was like her whole appearance changed. After a lot of comparison with all the huskies i have met through our obedience classes and our weekly trips to local dog parks I could almost swear she resembles a miniature albino German Shepard. Her parents where both good sized dogs in the 50 to 60 lbs rang but she is very small and delicate. I have no regrets getting her even if i find out she isn't purebred but i wanted to know if anyone has any advise on how i might go about finding out if she is pure bred. When i bought her they mentioned that one or both of the parents was papered but that they hadn't registered the litter because of the cost. I have spoken to my vet and the best her could suggest was a breed test from a site online that he found after some research that he said looked pretty legit. I have another husky a male and he shows the more classic characteristics of a husky so i was thinking of testing them both using him a a kind of control. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

A few things: -White GSDs are not albino -breed DNA tests are not accurate. There are different tests for pure bred and mixed dogs, if you choose the wrong test you will get a bad result. If you do tests from different sites you'll get vastly different results. -The picture in your avatar isn't great but to me that looks far more husky than GSD. GSDs have larger ears. The eyes look very husky (they're blue right?). Also her paws aren't wide like GSD. Does her tail curl up? -GSDs are larger than huskies so her being small should not lead o e to believe she is GSD. -at 1 year old she still has a lot of growing to do, especially her thickness. If you search for other size threads you'll find most people report their sibes didn't fill out until 2ish years old and some take as long as three years.

thank you, I know she dosn't really look like a German shepard but when i see her with other huskies it's hard to see the likeness. She totally has a husky temperment and alot of the physical characteristic of a husky, I was just really suprised when she quit growing and my vet was pretty sure she wasn't going to get much bigger, he said she may fill out but not grow in height. I mostly just want to know if anyone else has run into this problem or had this same question or if anyone had some advice. Yes her tail curls up and her eyes are blue almost white blue. She is just so delicate that is really the only way i can describe her. when she dosn't have weight on her paws they are very small and thin. I may be over reacting, it's just weird how i only really started noticing this after she blew out her coat. it was like she lost half her mass in fur alone. (picture in avatar is a few months old and before she blew out her coat)

What does she currently weigh? Imo, you will likely find she fills out a lot over the next year. The breed standard for females is 35-50lb. Far more huskies are bred over sized than under so your perception of what her size should be is likely somewhat skewed.

Her last weigh in was a few months ago and she was just over 40 lbs. Since she just turned 1 I will be taking her to the vet to borrow their scale to get a one year weight on her. luckily she absolutly loves her vet and they love it when we drop in just to say hi and so they can see how much they have grown. Since two full vet visits can get spendy they don't mind it if we drop in just to get weights since they are still young and growing. well at least my male is still growing. he is 4 months younger and huge compared to her. I guess that is in part why i have these questions about her.

Looks Husky to me from you're avatar. Can you post more pictures of her at different angles, so people can get a better idea of what she looks like? We purchased the DNA kit from our Petco for $60 and we got the results back in 6 weeks I believe it was. The test indicated my dog was purebred, which I had a feeling he was, but some people kept telling me he looked part pit bull. You're dog could be a poorly bred Husky, which can result not having the "typical Husky look". I have owned several German Shepherds and been around tons of them and I can honestly say you're girl doesn't look like a GSD at all to me, but that's just my opinion. White Shepherds :

A small female GSD will be 55 lbs. It's pretty unlikely either parent was a GSD based on the weights provided, but they do fall in the large husky range. I don't think it's surprising that she's full height but not yet full weight. Dogs finish growing up before they finish growing out.

She's perfectly normal weight and size for a female husky. Hailey is purebred, no doubt in my mind to it, and she is full-grown at 45 lbs. Your girl is right on track, if not a bit on the above standard size for a female. That filling out period between 1-3 years old can add as much as 10-15 lbs on (always depends on the dog). _________________ www.itsahuskything.com It's a husky thing... you wouldn't understand.

Thank you everybody, you have reassured me. It's about that time for some updated photos so I'm sure i will be adding new ones of my kids soon. (that's what i call them since it's like have two, two year old running around all day) I'm probably over reacting, I just can't help but compare her to the other huskies we meet. usually when we go out people obviously guess right away that Loki is a Husky but they are always surprised that Kiska is one to. Course most people i find out know absolutely nothing about huskies. Had a guy tell me the other day that Huskies don't usually get along with other dogs and that he was suprised on how close my two where to each other. I was like are you kidding me, they are pack animals, the more the merrier and they absolutely love meeting new friends human or dog. As long as they where raised that way and not abused or mistreated. I wanted to smack this guy with all the books i have at home about the breed.

I agree that she looks husky to me. Seeing how they *really* look after that first coat blow is always a shock.

A lot of people at the dog park ask me all the time if Nicky is purebred and is a white GSD. People just aren't educated that Huskies come in a variety of colors, including white.
