| My husband, my daughter, and I brought home two beautiful husky pups back in late December. They were 5 1/2 weeks when we got them and are now about 11 1/2 weeks old. We started potty training right when we got them so they would have structure from day 1. We have a dedicated spot in the yard for them and take them out whenever they wake up, immediately after eating, and anytime they have played really hard.
They both do really, really well in their crate over night 10-12 hours (same schedule as my daughter) and rarely have accidents. However, we have to pick them up when they exit their crate, regardless of if they have been in there 10 minutes or 10 hours, because they will immediately squat and pee on our carpet otherwise.
They (and us by default) have had to be confined to my tile kitchen because we have been having indiscriminate peeing issues lately. Remi (agouti) does the best of the two and only pees every once in a while if I am busy helping my daughter with something when they feel the urge or if I leave the room to take my 2 year old to the bathroom and he has to go. Diesel, on the other hand, will sometimes signal that he has to go by scratching at the door, but other times I don't get any warning at all. He will pee randomly and half the time his pee is clear. Diesel will also pee after he comes in from being outside in their run. If I leave the room, for any reason for more than a couple minutes (like to take my daughter to the bathroom), Diesel will pee and possibly poop.
Every time we let them into the living room with us, they will pee on the carpet within 5 minutes of being in the room - even if we just took them out to go potty.
They eat in the morning and evening (not free fed) and they get water after they eat and once during the day. If we give them more than that, Diesel seems to pee every 10 minutes and Remi tends to have to pee every 20 minutes or so. We took them both to the doctors and Diesel had a slight UTI, which we treated, but never saw any changes in his indiscriminate peeing.
What am I doing wrong? How do I get them to stop peeing everywhere? I want my dogs to be apart of our family and have more freedom, but I can't have 15+ accidents a day on my carpet with a 2 year old playing on them. Is this normal or just our pups? Are we having more problems because we have the two pups at once? Please help, any insight/advice specific for huskies would be appreciated! I've never had/or known anyone who had this much trouble with pups not taking to potty training. Thank you in advance! |
