| First night he did ok, he had the basics of crate training from his breeder. He only whined a little maybe 15 mins the first night then went to sleep after a potty break. Second night he moved up to 30 mins of whimpering and barking but then I heard him playing with his toys and We both went to sleep. Tonight it's been 2 hours and he is still going strong. Only difference is I moved him to the guest room across the hall so I could sleep. He is on a regular potty schedule and I work hard to prevent accidents.
The high pitched puppy screams are so LOUD , I'd love to keep him in the room with me in all honesty , but I think I'd go deaf.. I'm beginning to suspect he might be getting comfortable with his surroundings and not using his crate as a safe place as much like he did the first two nights. He is persistent, if I'm missing something or there is something different I could try that I just don't know about please enlighten me.
He loves his crate during the day, he plays and naps in it with the door open. At night it's become a whole different story. As I type this he is in the guest room telling the world about his sorrows. He will take mini breaks to listen to see if I'm coming to release him then starts right back up again. I'm thinking of trying a radio in there with him or something. He sounds like he is a victim on the set of a west craven movie at the moment. |

| I'm no expert on Huskies yet, but it seems to me that the move to another room might have triggered the anxiety. Can he see very much out of his crate? Where was the crate the first 2 nights? If it was close to you, and you moved him a drastic distance away from you, I could see that setting off seperation anxiety. Make sure you work with a lot of positive reinforcement. Take a day and put him in there for 10 minutes. Wait until he has a quiet moment, and let him out and give him a treat and tell him what a good boy he is. Do that several times a day, and gradually up the time he is in the crate. Positive association is working wonders with our 2 year old husky. His dad used to use the crate as a time out and a very NEGATIVE thing. Since they have moved in with us, I have put his crate in the livingroom with the door open and lead him in there with treats every once in a while. He has gone from hackles raised at the sight of the crate, to laying in the crate and taking naps when the house is quiet. And if your pup is barely even 2 months... cut him some slack. He doesn't understand why you are locking him in a box for hours. Hide a few treats in there for him for bedtime. Give him a treat in the crate when you put him back in after a potty break. Play around with things and see what works for him. Every dog has a sweet spot that us owners can take advantage of. Oh, and earplugs are a really good investment btw. My boyfriend has a pile of them next to the bed! |

| The move happend after the first hour of screeching. I feel like I've taken 4 steps back with the training. I'll try moving him back to my room to see how he does. Not like I'm sleepy anymore anyway lol. As for being locked in his kennel he's been sleeping in his own little crate at the breeders. He did well there, I'm thinking it might have something to do with him being alone in that room like we both suspect. Lucky for my no class tomorrow so I can take all the time I need to work this out and make him comfy. |

| Yea, locked in a room sends even my friendliest non-barking dog into a tizzy (they aren't crate trained though). He just got to your house a few days ago, right? He's still in an adjustment period. Did he get to keep his crate from the breeder or is he in a new one? If its new, he will have to adjust to the change. Wear a shirt (that you don't care about at ALL) around the house/sleep in it/grab something out of the dirty clothes and put it in there with him like a safety blanket. Sometimes that helps. And yea, if you want to get him used to being in the crate in the other room alone, take it slow. Put him in there for 5 mins, leave, wait till he quiets for a second, let him out, treat him. Rinse, repeat. Don't overwhelm him though - more is not always better. It will take some time to recognize your dog's signals on when he's at max capacity and continuing training will do more harm than good. From reading everyone else's first week horror story, it seems you are not alone in this. Keep it up, try not to get frustrated. Frustration and anger at not being able to sleep are counter productive and your puppy will sense it. Now, on Friday night, when I start my own thread begging for help on getting my new pup to be quiet, please feel free to laugh at me a little. Edit: Oh, and looking at your dog's name, I can see why he's being whiny about being locked in a room all by himself. You just aren't letting him live up to his potential. You obviously don't trust him. |

| I'm going to rework my methods and try and work on things with him more during the day . He has my robe in there with him as well as one of his mothers duck toys with her scent on it, but I think the being alone thing was a bit to far of a step for the little guy this early in the game. I'm sleep deprived but I'm not put out with the little guy just yet . I'll be interested in hearing about your first week with puppy and seeing lots of pictures. I just hope I'm still sane by that point |

| Good call. Make sure to update what you do, what works, what doesn't. I have helped raise and train countless puppies (my mom bred Shelties) but this will be my first husky puppy, and with all the horror stories, I'm getting nervous. But I also have a 4 year old, so I am no stranger to napping for 15 minutes and being awake for 5 hours...
And hey, if my boyfriend can make it through that first week with NO dog knowledge/prior ownership experience... I have complete faith in you, person I do not know! He didn't get ANY sleep the first 3-4 days is what I heard. Took about a week before he really got any decent sleep. |

| I imagine this is a little like waking up with a baby I took him out just now and he went 1 & 2 . I thought that was why he was barking so much but after letting him walk around a bit until he got tired I put him back in. Right back to barking |

| Yup. They just wanna be with you. The baby doesn't develop the ability to "fake" anything for a long time. When they cry, they are legitimately crying. It may not be a rational reason, or a reason we would sympathise with, but all they know is they are scared or cold or anxious or hungry or tired or wet or uncomfortable. I have a mini Dachshund, and that's just how he is. I let him stay with me at all times because A. he is adorable and a total lap dog, B. that's just how the breed is, C. he NEVER gives up on the barking/baying. And even when he chews something up, its still somehow adorable. He has to drag my slippers over in front of the heater to lay (and occasionally chew) on. If I leave the house, I come back to him laying on the most recent piece of clothing I wore. He even lays on my feet while I do the dishes.
As they get older, they become more independent, but as babies, they don't have enough experience to regulate their own fears. 7-8 weeks is the biggest human socialization period, so they are just learning how to interact with people and trying to understand what the tall things wearing funny colored fur are doing and why. Also, good job on the potty break! Keep it up. I am going to have to set a timer to go off every 2 hours so I remember to do that... |

| Dragon was awful and screamed like an old woman at a seance until we moved him into our room. Since then he is quiet as a mouse. He will occasionally wimped but my husband will just say "no" loudly and he stops. It's been SO much better because he was so loud and obnoxious before but I think he was just scared and wanted to be next to us. |

| We have been very lucky with Scarlett and crate training, which surprised me because she lived in a barn as a puppy and had free rein there and to an outdoor pen. So first couple of nights we tried her crate out in the hallway just outside our bedroom.... first night I slept on the floor with her (in the hall), and she was perfectly fine no whining...second night my husband did the same... again no whining. Third night we tried no one sleeping in the hall with her.... then she started whining. After about 5 min. of that I moved the crate into our room right beside my bed and again no whining.
She has slept in her crate beside our bed for about a month now with no problems. Of course she will start to whine if she hears me and my husband talking (because we are awake and she knows if we are awake we let her up on the bed to cuddle before sleeping).
They definitely just want to know that you are close to them. Also - making sure Puppy is tired before bed will also help! Have a serious play session in the house or outside to tucker the little one out before bed. And routine too - do the same things before bed so the Puppy knows that "ok, this means it is bed time soon"- we found that helps as well (helped a lot with our Lab as well)
Now we just ran into the opposite problem last night....Same routine as always... play before bed, outside to Potty, upstairs so we can brush our teeth, both dogs up on the bed for some cuddles.. Scarlett in her crate. And then the whining started. I thought it was because she had to pee so I took her out again and sure enough, she did her business. But she started to whine and whine again when I put her in her crate. Finally I decided it is time for her to be back in the hallway... moved her crate out there... put both dogs in their crates (Charlie too, he didn't seem too impressed by this, you should have seen the eyes and droopy ears he gave me), and she was fine again. I had a feeling that now she is a little older and knows what it is like to be up on the bed with us she did not want to be in her crate.
So things will also change - just give Puppy some time to get comfy in its new surroundings and house. |

I constantly keep him awake.. If he is about to fall asleep i take him for a walk, or take him to my sister so my neice and nephew can play wit him, or let me parents play with him.. Then when i ate diner which is around 8. I pick up his food.. And leave water out for extra half hour.. I give him his bone that he likes alot but he only gets it when i eat diner before his bed time.. This way he doesnt beg.. After he plays wit the bone for a while he falls asleep around 9:30 and then i take hik outside right away to potty.. Then just put him in his crate and he is out for the nite.. He usualy sleep tille about 5ish then and then he pottys and goes back him his crate about every hour after that point. Hope my routine help you a little |

| We discovered if we covered Karli's kennel so she couldn't see out of it at all, that helped tremendously. We did that the second night, after her crying for hours the first night. She now is perfectly fine sleeping in her crate at night. |

Sounds very similar to my daily routine although he catches a few naps throughout the day. He mostly wants to play at night my mom made the comment that maybe he is getting too much rest during the day. Sounds like you don't let koda get too much of that during the day and shifted his sleeping more towards the afternoon. |

Old woman at a seance I have a few videos of his late night wailing and put them up on Facebook. My friends think I'm a saint at this point for not making him sleep in the garage but I'd rather him closer and easier to watch. Thank you all for all the info so far btw. |

| Kavik cried and howled like a banshee the first couple of nights (and still does at times). I was able to calm him down by moving him to my room. I played with him around and in the crate, then when I put him in it I stuck my fingers through the door to show him I wasn't going anywhere. When I turned off the light he started crying but I made noise to let him know I was there and he eventually settled.
As others said, tiring him out beforehand goes a long way to him going right to sleep.
It won't last forever. Good luck! |

| Alpine was the same way until I put a blanket over his crate at night. I would tell him "go night night". At first he would wimper for a bit, then would sleep all night. He kept the blanket over his crate until he was around 6 months old (he started pulling it into the crate & tearing it up). So I decided to remove the blanket, & he started back whimpering. Then I started giving him a kong slightly filled w/ frozen peanut butter, that lasted a couple months... Now I just tell him to go to bed & go night night & he does... Just takes time & patience. |

He will lie down next to me and shut his eyes and ill let him sometimea but never longer than 10min and that whole 10mim im rubbing him or touching him, i guess trying to annoy him a little so he doesnt get a good nap.. But it works wonders!! Cause the first night i would wake up when he woke up every hour and then play with him until he got tired again. But this works alot better |
