When I got my puppy I noticed discolored bumps on his chest and belly along with a bald patch on his arm and tail. I took him to the vet immediately and he had RINGWORM ! (Very pissed about this for just having got him from these people that seemed very sure of what they were doing !) The spots on his belly and chest were some kind of skin infection the vet said is common with puppies. I have antibiotics for that and cream for the ringworm now. I guess my question is what can I do to get him to stop scratching? Is a banking soda soak safe? I tried the anti itch spray from the store and it doesn't seem to help for very long. I tried calling my vet but I couldn't get through to them today. There has to be some kind of home remedy for intching !

My GSD has the same "spots" on his stomach that the vet just said is normal in puppies, however now about 2 months later he has it AGAIN! grr it makes me think it's more than what they said, but the spots don't bother him, so I'm going to let it go unless they get bad.

Well these spots are scabby and when when come off they're like yellowish green. They've been driving him insane! I had to file down his nails really well because he was making himself bleed!

Bullet's are too. They almost look like small dime sized brush burns. I dislike it. Thankfully he doesn't pay any attention to them.

Hydrocortisone spray that you use for anti-itching in people. I got some for Kale when he had a hot spot on his face and it worked great. I got it at CVS and got the generic CVS brand one.
ETA: Its called "Instant Cooling Itch Relief-Intensive Therapy"

How often did you have to put it on? The spray I have wears off fast or he licks it off and is scratching again about half an hour later.

When Koda had his hot spot, we soaked the spot with some peroxide and put baking soda on it. It's the oils that make something itch. Any alcohol will dry out the spot and relieve itching. The baking soda deters them from licking. That's about as "home remedy" as I can get.
Ringworm straight from the breeder is a warning flag to me, but it can happen even with the best breeders. Check out the How to Find a Reputable Breeder Thread to see if there were anymore red flags other than that

They weren't really breeders. Their dogs just had puppies. I don't think they knew. Then again his spot is large and obvious so idk how they missed it. Thanks for the tip ! I'll try that when he gets up from his nap
Lol I meant I don't think they knew about the ringworm. I do think they were trying for puppies but they aren't registered. I wasn't looking for a husky when I was looking to get a puppy I just saw their post on a bulletin board and decided between him and a chihuahua. My husband doesn't like tiny dogs so there we have it. I'm pissed about it but I'm glad I have him to give him the care and attention he needs and was clearly lacking.
I use hydrocortisone cream on itchy/hot spots. I only apply it maybe 2-3 times a day when I have had to use it and if they bother the site at all in between applications I simply stop them and redirect their attention.
I'm stopping him all day long but it's at night when we're asleep or trying to that he just whines and whines about it the other night I got up and saw he had scratched himself raw in one spot. Today has been better. I tried the spray again and this time put way more on and didn't care if he got all oily feeling and he seems to be doing okay. He just looks disgusting.
I didn't feel like making a new topic so I'll post here.
So over the past week or so I've noticed my boy has been scratching his right side ear at least 10 times a day, same spot every time..and each itchy season is about 12 seconds. I've checked behind his ear but everything looks and feels normal. Just a little flea dirt ughh but just a little bit. I haven't changed is food, although I was slowly starting to mix in Orijen kibble but that can't be it cause it's so little like 1% Orijen and 99% Dr. Tim's. I stopped mixing in Orijen like three days ago just to see though but nothing has changed. Should I go to the vet for this or just continue to keep an eye on him? I'll be posting a video clip of him having an itchy session soon.
Ahh man that's what I was thinking..hmmm no I haven't smelled the area but now I will when I get home. Although I get on his face everyday, I haven't noticed any out of the ordinary smells. What if I don't smell anything? It bugs me so much seeing him scratching in the same spot everyday, I know something has to be going on.

Odor is normally a dead give away that it's an ear infection but not the only one.
Ears are one of those great places that "bugs" like to attack, they're warm, moist and really hard to reach. If he's scratched himself so much that he's created a raw spot there, then it's time to make a run to the vet, in my opinion.
David, a lot of people refer to the greater Houston metropolis as "living in Houston" (I often did when I lived in Rosenberg because everyone knows where Houston is but few know where Rosenberg is ... there are a couple of really good vets that I know out 59S)

Is it suppose to smell really bad? Cause I don't smell a nasty smell but then again it's the first time I ever smell his ear lol what do you mean by raw spot? And sighh if it's because of bugs then I feel guilty I still live with my parents and my room is right next to the kitchen and it's nasty..little roach bug things are common on the floor and like to crawl over to my room. So a bug probably is the problem I can't wait til' I finish college and move out. I still have to upload the video of him scratching here when I get home.
And I'm near downtown, I like my vet. They know us by name there already, I think I go once a month something always comes up.

I'm sorry David, that comment about a raw spot was the previous poster on this thread ... my bad!
The smell that *I* associate with ear infections is a yeasty smell... like when your mom bakes bread or canned biscuits but not so strong. I like that you like and have a good relationship with your vet - I wasn't suggesting you change, just that if you didn't have a "normal" vet and were in the southeast I did know of a couple good ones.

Here's a clip of Mylo having a itchy ear session that he's been routinely having throughout the days for about a week already.
I've checked in and around the ear and it looks fine and I don't smell anything "smelly". Maybe I should smell some yeast then try smelling again. I'm not familiar with that smell haha
I think I found the culprit of Mylo's ear scratching…I got to inspect the back of his right side ear and it had a quite a few flea dirt ughh. His ear looks fine from far, I would've never guessed that he had so much of that stuff there. As I was trying to get all that crap out, he was getting itchy. So no ear infection then.
