New Husky Owner Empty
PostSubject: New Husky Owner   New Husky Owner EmptyWed Nov 28, 2012 1:09 pm

Hello, I am currently living in San Antonio and my wife and I decided to get a new husky puppy. We currently have 10 month old lab and we would like a playmate for him. Also we wanted a husky for our first dog but was advised not to as a first dog. We have no idea what to name our new puppy yet but we will be picking her up in 2 weeks. Our lab has a lot of energy. He started off very VERY lazy until about 6 month old but now I think he will play until he drops if he has a chance. From what I have read on forums so far, the exercise part shouldn't be that big of a problem in our household. My wife and I both read through "Husky for dummies" and learned a lot about them. But I do realize all dogs have their own personality which I learned from my lab. We studied a lot about labs before we picked up our first dog but he was nothing like a typical lab. But I like to think he's our kind of a lab raised our way and fits in perfectly (or we were fitted into him). Well I hope to learn a lot more as I face husky puppyhood.

Neat! Another Texan, yay! I'm in Houston. Cool

Your Husky will love having another playmate! Unfortunately, I don't have a second dog for Juneau, but I always take her to dog parks/social events. They'll wear each other out!

Poke around our nutrition section to find out which food is best suitable for your Husky. Crate training is a must. Positive reinforcement works better than negative reinforcement. As you probably read, be prepared for stubbornness!

Congrats, and can't wait to see puppy pictures!

LOL thank you for your reply. We are in San Antonio.

We have a crate that we used to potty train our lab. It's the cage one with dividers so I probably will use the same one and let her have it. It might be little too big eventually because I bought XL crate for our lab but he has free reign in the house since we moved here. And training's going to be the one thing I will be focused on.

As for food, I am against raw food diet so I would like to stick with kibbles but I think I'll need more research on that.

I will post pics as soon as we have her.

Welcome to the world of huskies, you will have fun!!

There are a lot of decent kibbles out there, I feed Blue Buffalo to my puppy and she just gobbles it up (much better than she did with the old food.)

Welcome! Be careful with food because what works for the lab might not work for the husky (sensitive stomachs). Yuki originally did horrible on Blue Wilderness, but now I have her on Taste of the Wild pacific stream and both her appetite and health have gone up! Haha you'll just have to find what works for you. Good luck with the new pup!
