so took the pups in for their shots yesterday and they got 3yr distemper shots, is that something new? thought it was just 1yr? and jack got his rabies 3yr and sierra is good on that till next year. called the other vet about her teeth and looks like for 2 yearly dog checkups and her dental cleaning/ tooth pull it will be about $200+tax so not to bad hope to do it this month. I think if I can keep their shots and checkups the same month we got them it will not be hard for us to forget to do them! what else does everyone do for caring for their dogs yearly other then grooming, or added shots they get?

We just do the yearly check up, heartworm check/meds and rabies (if needed) all at once every April. The Lepto/Distemper we give at home since the sister-in-law is a vet tech. It costs us $8 per dog plus a couple of extra needles. This is the first I've heard of a three year distemper. But I'm not one of those in the know people on that stuff.

I think the 3 year is new Jenn, but I'm not positive. I don't have the dog papers on me, but I think the most recent ones we did for Hailey were 3 years but the one we had for Koda was a year? But don't quote me on that Smile

They DO have a 3 year rabies vaccine. Koda has that one and so does Hailey.

Hi All,

I'm also confused on my dogs shots. They (Banfield Vet) tell me we can go 3 years before needing shots again. Slightly confused as a different associate told me every year....

I'm cool with every year, if these new shots go 3 years my wallet will be happy.

Dogs need AT LEAST a rabies shot EVERY year. Unless some shot came out that lasted longer and I don't know about it.

They have 3 year rabies, but some areas require it yearly for licensing. If I lived in an area that didn't require the annual rabies, I would still go in for an annual well visit. I've never heard of a 3 year distemper. I am very okay with that!

This site has been a god-send for me.

Interesting... my dogs have been on 3 year distemper combos for many years. Rabies also. Licensing is annually through the state, and it says if they need a shot or not, so 3 year rabies must be the norm, at least here. Usually, they do the 3 in a row for puppies, the last of those 3 being a one year vaccine, then every 3 years thereafter. In fact, I don't recall ever doing it differently....

Thanks again for the reply. I'm now positive I probably misunderstood what they told me.

The information from you all will help in funding my dogs bank account (a 2nd savings account) for next years shot. Just started "Meeka" shots 2 weeks ago and going to Banfield again next Tuesday for the next set of shots.

Oh wow. Well, I learned something! Down here, maybe it's just the areas I've been, but we have yearly Rabies. Over the years, I've been to several vets down here and they always have yearly. That 3 years is NICE.

They do have 3 year rabies vaccinations now - the vets upsell the shots - not needed every year - but good income. Has anyone ever done a titers test? to determine if there is enough vaccine left from previous shots - sufficent that they dont need another one? just like people, animals are being over vaccinated and its causes health issues. I have my horse titers tested and only do what is absolutely neccesary - my dog had cancer so she really couldnt get any vaccinations after her dignosis - her immune system couldnt take it - and she had a waiver. A titers test is similar in cost to the vaccination - but what inject them with something they dont really need??? thoughts anyone??? we all worry about their food and feedign raw is the new thing to do - why not do the right thing with the vaccines too........

Dogs definitely do NOT need a rabies every year. Dogs don't even need them every three years. But because our Government doesn't understand how detremental it is to our animals to flood their system with unneeded shots, some places are up to three year rabies and some are still at one year. But guess what? Both vaccines are EXACTLY SAME!! Vaccines are seriously the number one thing I think pet owners NEED to have knowledge on!! A wide majority of owners have NO idea what annual vaccines are doing to our animals. I only do the three year rabies because I HAVE to. Everything else is titer tested.

Where we live, the 3 year isn't even an option. And you have to have an up to date rabies tag or you know (dog could bite someone and get put down). Heck, I didn't even know there was a 3 year shot until I read it on a thread!

When I lived in Illinois, dogs has to get the rabies shot every year. Moved to Ohio in 2003, rabies shot was only required every three years- same exact vaccine. So there could be some states out there still requiring yearly rabies.

In most places, the rabies shot is all that is legally required. A three year vaccine is commonly used. The vaccines like distemper, parvo, lyme's disease and canine hepatitis may vary in schedule depending on your vet's risk assessment of the dog. I would think huskies, with their tendency to wander, eat things and generally get into stuff should be getting boosters with more frequency than something like a toy poodle that never leaves the living room. But, I'm not a veterinarian...

I have never had any experience with Banfield. I'm wondering if you always see the same veterinarian when you visit. There are a lot of benefits to seeing the same person every time, just as there are for us by seeing the same physician.
