Yay...Giardia... Empty
PostSubject: Yay...Giardia...   Yay...Giardia... EmptyWed Nov 21, 2012 12:18 am

So Nikko has giardia. I'm going to the vet in the morning to pick up his meds. I've been reading about it online and ill talk with the vet in the morning, but does anyone have any tips for dealing with it? My main issue is keeping him from popping in areas he's already pooped, as he can reinfect himself. He has one or 2 spots that he poops in. Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated.

Just make sure you pick up his poo right away and keep up with the meds. I also recommend wearing gloves when you pick it up. You'll want to do a retest for it after he's done this his medication to make sure it's all taken care of, and possibly a month after that to be doubly sure. Giardia can sometimes be hard to get rid of.

Well one slight issue is I usually don't pick up his poop. He does it in a spot where the poop just blends in pretty much. I know that's probably bad and I should pick up every poop. So should I go dig around to get all his old poop or would the grass still be contaminated?

You need to watch him outside every time he goes, follow him. The medications aren't going to do anything if you aren't picking it up. He'll just get it again. Did you contact the breeder to see if the other puppies had it? was he getting dewormed regularly at the breeders?

I'm starting to take him to another spot he usually never goes to and I'll start picking everything up. No I didn't contact the breeder yet. He's been dewormed 3 times. Once with each shot. Will I need to clean his toys or is it just transmitted through poop?

I would definitely contact the breeder to let him or her know. There's a chance the other pups have it, since Giardia is a protist (not killed by regular dewormers). It's transmitted through poop, but you should also consider that poop can be stepped on and tracked to other places, so you might want to thoroughly clean anything his mouth comes in contact with (toys, food and water dishes, etc..) People can get it too, so definitely wear gloves when picking up the poop!

Sounds like the same situation I've been in with Lucian, except he had Coccidia. Came up in his fecal exam the first time I had him at the vet when he was 8 weeks old. So far it's taken two rounds of medication. I'll find out today if he still has it or not. So be sure to take a stool sample in with every month with his vaccines until it's gone. I'm crossing my fingers that Lucian is in the clear today. He's doing fine, but I still hate knowing he has a nasty intestinal parasite. I've been picking up poop every single time he goes. Good luck, hope it clears up quickly.

I had to google for a minute now I'm worrying Luna might have it do to the sign. Luna have not been eating a lot.(Loss of appetite) she been drinking a lot of water (Dehydration) she's very tired, she sleep a lot . Plus she's gassy. From my understanding its very common on young dogs with stress or weak immune systems. Luna is on med because she have a Skin disease and her immune systems is weak cant fight it so the med help. That's why she's not Spayed yet.

I know I can be over reacting, but I think anything is possible since I got her.

Shouldn't the vet pickup on that when she asked me for a stool simple ?

Nikko, how did you discover it or wasn't it the vet?
