3 month old pup with frequent vomiting Empty
PostSubject: 3 month old pup with frequent vomiting   3 month old pup with frequent vomiting EmptyMon Oct 01, 2012 11:52 am

I have been having some issues with Yukon vomiting frequently.

First, he gets car sick almost every time we go somewhere unless it is a short trip (under 10 minutes). If we drive at higher speeds or are in the car for longer, he will throw up. The vet prescribed dramimine, which did not work, and said that he should outgrow it.

Also, it seems that almost every day he vomits, and it is at different times. He does not act any differently, has a healthy appetite and is not underweight. I am just concerned that he vomits so often. For example, Saturday he threw up first thing in the morning, and then last night before we went to bed I took him outside to potty and he threw up twice outside.

What are some things that would cause this? I know the most common is that they eat something, but I watch him constantly and he hasn’t eaten any foreign objects. I have not changed his food or treats either.

I am racking my brain to figure out what is causing him to vomit so much, and what I could do to help him. He has been to the vet and had his poo tested and was checked for parasites, and all turned out fine.

Some things I thought may be causing this are:

Mulch - The only place I let him out by himself is my back patio area that has mulch and I have caught him with it in his mouth alot.

Toys - I let him chew on a rawhide dental stick and a nylabone, maybe the pieces that he chews off are not agreeing with him.

Treats - Maybe he is allergic to one of his treats?

Empty stomach - He never vomits after eating, it is usually in the morning when he first wakes up, or several hours after he eats. He gets 3 meals a day, each is 1/2 cup at 6am, noon and 6pm.

Food - I switched him to TOTW a month ago, so it may be possible that it does not agree with his tummy. His poo is normal though.

Picked up a virus - It is possible that on one of our walks he picked up something. His last vet visit with a few weeks ago and was fine.

Have you had any blood work done on him?
I don't want to scare you but my parents dog, who is part lab and part collie, would vomit almost on a daily basis. Most of the time it would be yellow bile. There was no particular time of day when it would happen and he would act fine. When he was 8 years old, he got really sick and we found out he had a problem with his liver through a blood test. He was given antibiotics and a 50/50 chance of survival. He's still alive today at the age of 14.
Once again, I am not trying to scare you. Nor does it mean that this is what's wrong with Yukon. But I definitely think you should have him checked out and maybe get a blood test if he hasn't had one. Just my 3 month old pup with frequent vomiting 2144500265.

No, I haven't but he goes in for his neuter on the 19th and will have a bloodtest before they do the surgery.

I seem to notice a pattern with Yukon's vomits. They are usually in the morning, and there is typically undigested food with it as well. I have not noticed anything foreign or any blood, etc in his vomit or I would take him immediately. I have not noticed any changes in appetite or behavior either.

When I took Biko in for sickness a month and half ago one of the 1st question the vet ask was if he got into a compost pile. Depending on what your mulch is made of the mulch could be suspect.

It's been a few weeks and the vomiting during the night has gotten much better. I took away all rawhide, and I slit his dinner up into two meals, at 6pm and again at 8pm so he does not have an empty stomach overnight. This has seemed to help with it.

He still eats like it's his last meal. I tried using the treat dispenser and it slows him down a bit.
