So after giving Lycus his breakfast I went to work. When I came back for lunch, I noticed he had vomited about 3 times, his entire meal. I decided to give him water and he drinks but he ends up throwing that up too. I've been fasting him but I'm unsure if I should leave him plenty of water to keep hydrated, or give him small portions of water now and then to reduce the vomiting. Any ideas of what I should do? He isn't really lethargic or sad, just vomiting everything. He probably ate something he shouldn't have but I don't have any idea what. Does anyone have any suggestions of what else I should do for him? If it's not better by tomorrow early afternoon, I'm going to call the vet and see what they say.

I also have Cerenia that the vet had given before when he had something similar going on. I might call in tomorrow morning and ask if it's ok to give it to him again to stop the vomiting.

While you're waiting overnight to talk to the vet, I would give him small sips of water so he doesn't get dehydrated. I hope he feels better soon!

I know Lexi has stomach issues, but she always can keep down water. I would call vet and try to give small amounts. I think in the past I have given my dogs pedalyte as well.

What does the vomit look like? As in, color and consistency. My vet always suggests Pepcid AC for vomiting to help control the stomach acid. He always suggests fasting for 24hrs and pepcid ac. When Gus started throwing up in the morning, it was only bile (yellow and foamy). And it was because he was hungry. He would continue to throw up nearly every 20mins in the morning until he got food in his stomach. When I wasn't sure what it was, I gave him very small amounts of food that I soaked in hot water. Just like 1/4 cup. Maybe even less. If he kept that down for an hour, I'd give him another 1/4cup soaked.

But in the past, I had a shih tzu who repeatedly vomited several times over the course of 1.5days, and it turned out to be an intestinal blockage and he required emergency surgery. His vomit was dark brownish.

The consistency of the vomit is pretty important! If you want to try the Pepcid, the non-brand name is famotidine I believe. And you can google the dosage. It's just an antacid. Hope he feels better soon! I hate how these things always happen at night or on a Sunday when the vet is closed!

Thans for the advice Maggie! He's vomit has been the color of basically what he has ingested. Yesterday morning his vomit was the color of his kibble. And after that it was all clear liquid from his water. That's when I minimized it. And last night he vomited and it green because he had eaten quite a bit of grass, and then a little bit again but it was mostly his water again. He has been drinking a little bit of water this morning and holding it in. Hopefully its getting better. I will ask the vet today bout the Pepcid AC as well or if they think I should just take him in to get tests done.

Probably a good idea. I used to give Dizzy pepto so that's an option as well.

Coincidentally, I am also stomach sick and threw up in middle of the night... ugh.

I actually did just end up taking him in. He's there right now, but they'll be keeping him for a while since theres two other dogs that have an operation this morning. It'll  be a while before they can take a look at him.

I know he did poop before he ate his breakfast yesterday morning, but after that he hasn't. Either he's probably blocked up, or it's because he's been vomiting all the food instead. I'm just really hoping it's not an obstruction that will require surgery. They'll be doing extensive blood work, and if necessary x-rays.

Thanks for the concern. I brought him home a little while ago. They did the blood work but not the x-rays. The vet said that for the most part he seems ok. He was a little dehydrated from the vomiting but not too bad. They injected some fluids so he won't be able to vomit them out. They prescribed antibiotics and Cerenia to stop the vomiting. If he's not better by Monday or Tuesday, I will be taking him in again for x-rays. He doesn't want to eat right now so I had to force feed him his medications as well as some boiled rice. Hopefully he starts feeling better soon and doesn't have a serious obstruction.

Can I ask why they did not do an X-ray and what exactly they prescribed antibiotics for? Seems like an odd diagnosis is all!

Honestly, I'm not sure why they didn't do the x-ray. They had even asked me that if it was necessary, if I would allow the x-rays and I said yes but they didn't do it... As for the antibiotics, his blood work showed that his white blood cell count was higher than normal, so he probably has an intestinal infection. This is actually the second time this has happened with Lycus unfortunately and he was prescribed the same thing and it did help. The antibiotics they gave are Metronidazole.

Please let me know why you think it's an odd diagnosis. Lycus is my first dog so I am still learning a lot with him so any help would be greatly appreciated

Jen, yes his anemia has been gone for quite some time now thankfully. His vomiting was very spontaneous. One night he was fine, I had taken him to Petsmart and he was as psycho as always, and the next morning he's throwing up.

How's Lycus doing now? Vomitting makes me nervous, so I've been thinking about him a lot!

He's actually doing a lot better now! Ever since I started him on the medications he stopped vomiting instantly and he's even pooped now lol. I had him on boiled rice for a few days and when I switched him back to kibble I think he was a bit disappointed lol. Thanks for your concern it means a lot
