| I have been feeding my dog rotisserie chicken without skin and spices at least 4 times a week. My husky loves this! I also feed him kibble. He has not been pooping very good and I am eliminating things I know he shouldn't eat like certain treats and such. He also has been going to town on a rawhide bone I got at the store and it smelled nasty so I bought him another one same kind at another store that was wrapped and it smelled the same. I am eliminating those but wondering if the Rotisserie chicken is bad for my dog? I know a lot of you are very smart with your husky's and need some answer on the chicken. My husband is totally against a raw diet so I won't do that. But I thought cooked chicken was great for Husky's as long as you feed him kibble with the other nutrients in them. So my question is cooked chicken ok for my dog 4 times a week as long as I don't give him the skin and bones? |

| I wouldn't be too sold on the rotisserie chicken - cooking it may devoid it of most of its nutritional value for the dog. Also, what brand of kibble are you feeding him?
Also, do you mind me asking why hubby is against feeding raw? |

| He doesn't like the fact of the dog eating raw food and raw chicken. I feed him Paul Newmans kibble and Rachael Rays kibble. They seemed to have good ingredients in them. He is such a fussy eater my dog. He is not a fan of canned dog food. He loves the chicken but I am not sure if it is giving him the bad poops he has been having. No sign of worms or anything like that in it. The cooked chicken isn't hurting him though right? I also cook very lean hamburg and steak for him and drain the fat. Not to much lately it's just been rotisserie chicken because he eats that the best. |

| My dog is the same - he will look at the fruits & veggies and give us the Whacha-want-me-to-do-with-that?? look. I haven't come across those dog foods, but try looking it up on www.dogfoodadvisor.com - it's a handy tool that helped me out when I was figuring out what to feed Stark (we ended up deciding on raw but that's personal preference) Try stopping the chicken for a little while and see if it changes the consistency of his poop. |

| You're doing good by knowing that spices aren't good for him. Raw meat is OK for dogs - it's what their digestive system does best! They have special acids to specifically break down the bones, ligaments, and etc. They will not get worms like humans could from eating raw.
Another thing you could do is a bland diet for a few days to rule out if he's having issues with the food, or something else.
Start with scrambled eggs (good source of protein), green beans (I know you said your pup didn't like veggies... peas are good too), and a tablespoon of pumpkin (100% pumpkin, not the pie filling. Libby's is a good one, comes in a can).
I'm not sure how old/big your husky is, but give him about 3 scrambled eggs, 1/2 cup of green beans (or carrots) and a tablespoon of pumpkin 2x's a day, for about 3 days. Within the first 24 hours he should have his first firm poop!
My 6 month old female had a few days of sloppy poop. I put her on this diet for about 4 days and then slowly put her back on the kibble, good as new!
For what it's worth, I feed Taste of the Wild - Pacific Stream. Each dog is different and may not get along with certain brands. Keep away from kibble that has grains and corn in it. Huskies are known for sensitive stomachs and picky eaters lol.
Good luck! Poke around the nutritional section, lots of other helpful information there too. |

| Thank you, My dog does like scrambled eggs so I will get some Libby's pumpkin and put some in the eggs. I will try the peas with it. My husky will be 4 in December I have only had him for one year. Yes he is a fussy eater lol I have tried wild buffalo and those kinds of canned foods and he snubs his nose at it. The Newmans Kibble has good stuff in it. Peas, chicken ect and I thought it was to sensitive for his stomach with all the veggie stuff in it so I changed it to Rachael Rays which the first ingredient is beef and says that it's not like the others with the corn crap in it. He enjoys eating that so I have been giving him that and cooked chicken. Maybe one day a week I cook him lean hamburg or cube steak and 2 days I give him canned food with his kibble. Lately I have been only giving him what he likes best the chicken but I wasn't sure if giving him cooked chicken without all the skin and spices was good for him? I never give him cooked bones. |

| The thing is you can't change it just because he doesn't like it. It will make him pickier. They will eat when they are hungry and if he doesn't eat the kibble that's good for him well that would be all he gets as treats and as dinner until he ate it. But that's just me.
But like Angela said check out that site and see where your kibble ranks. You want a 4 or 5 star kibble. We feed Blue Buffalo Wilderness and are trying Taste of the Wild might rotate them. And you want grain free! |

| Thanks for all the advice I really appreciate it. Yes that is it not wild buffalo lol Blue buffalo I bought 3 different cans and he wouldn't eat it. Dried up I guess I just can't be so soft with him and feed him and if he doesn't eat it take it away and feed the same thing to him again. I just feel like I am being mean lol |

| Hahah. You aren't being mean. You are just trying to avoid any issues. I feed only dry food and when she was a pup I would wet the food but thats as close to canned food as I will get. We feed the duck and salmon flavors of Blue and she loves them both. She wasn't too interested in the chicken. We are trying the pacific stream and high prairie flavors of TOTW. She seems to like them both. If you are interested in Taste of the Wild you can contact them like I did and tell them you are considering switching food and they will send you samples of the flavors you wish to try. |

| I only tried the wet Blue Buffalo and he wanted nothing to do with it. I will go to the website and ask for a sample of the dry food. I don't want to buy a big bag and then he won't eat it. I wonder if I should only feed him dry food and cooked chicken and such as a treat? Do you know if rawhide bones make the dogs poop bad? He had chewed one for a good hour both times he had bad poops. My husband is not to happy because the dog woke him up all night the other night having to go outside. |

| Yes some dog's tummies do not agree with the grains in rawhides. They can make his stomach upset. Anna thankfully doesn't have as sensitive as a tummy and she can chew on rawhides. Just make sure the he doesn't choke on a rawhide. Be careful with them.
I would try TOTW samples and if he likes the food stick with that. I think dry food is better for their teeth? I maybe wrong on that one. If you try Blue Buffalo Wilderness again try the 11lb bag of some odd flavor. He might like it. I wouldn't feed the canned.
As for the chicken. I think there are some people on here that feed chicken breast pieces as a treat but I am not sure. I am not the best to ask on that one. We stopped treats for a while because she wouldn't eat her food. I feed her twice a day and I will treat her with her dog food if she is not eating it, Anna loves it, thinks she is getting something special. The treats we do have I use to brush her, clip her nails, and teach her tricks as long as she is eating her food. |

| Cool thanks I can use all the advice possible on Husky's I have read so much on the internet about them I think I know quite a bit but the food part is a stinker with him lol I need to find the right thing and stick with it. I just know how he enjoys the chicken but I am thinking it's not to good for him because it is cooked. Thanks so much for taking time to talk with me. |

It's not being mean, it's what we like to call tough love. Just like kids, they may not appreciate that we are actually trying to do better for them. Honestly, I would cut out the rotisserie chicken and feed the kibble only for a while and see what the results are with the stool. Just because the skin and spices on the surface are removed does not mean it isn't loaded with other stuff that might upset his stomach. A lot of chicken has salt added which you don't want to feed your dog, I would guess rotisserie chicken contains a fair amount which is not good in the long term. If I had to guess, the chicken would be my first suspect for the loose stools. - ladylisa wrote:

You do not need to feed lean meats to your dog. Dogs need more fat in their diet than we do, I buy lean meats for my family but I purposely get the higher fat content cuts for my dogs. I would suggest not buying rotisserie chicken and just cooking up your own plain, unaltered, boneless chicken and cooking it lightly. I wouldn't cook it as thoroughly as you would for people so that it actually retains more nutrition. And I can't imagine any dog preferring the average canned dog food over a fresh, roasted chicken. If he's used to eating chicken and beef and cubed steak it's not surprising that he would turn his nose up at canned dog food. _________________ |

No, dry dog food does nothing to clean their teeth. Does eating cereal or crunchy cookies clean yours? The only diet that actually helps keep teeth clean is one that includes bone, basically Prey Model Raw. Diets with ground bone do not count as the dog doesn't actually have the opportunity to chew on the bones. Lisa, keep us updated on what changes you make and how it goes. _________________ |

| Forgot to say that Ellen is correct, rawhides do have a tendency to upset the stomach and result in soft stool.
Lisa, I'm not sure if you are aware that rawhides are one of those debatable items. Dogs cannot digest rawhide so it has the potential to be hazardous to their health if a large piece or amount gets stuck in the digestive tract resulting in a blockage which can be fatal, if not very expensive to remove surgically. This is why most people prefer not to give rawhides and stick with safer chew alternatives such as bully sticks, antlers, etc. I would keep rawhides on the "do not feed" list at least until the stool issue clears up, if not forever. _________________ |

| Thank you so much for the clarification, Megan! So glad I asked instead of making an @$$ outta myself LOL I feed raw, but I know people that feed kibble and this issue has come up. I'll make sure they know the truth so they don't deter other pet owners unintentionally. |
