I'm curious how many of the folks around here use this method of training.

I've clicker trained Bella and quite a few other dogs (non Siberians). I love it.

I use a clicker sometimes, also with my cats.

I use it once in a while for my own dogs. I use a clicker or a training whistle every day in my animal training classes for zoo and aquarium animals.

here i will copy / paste from a book how exactly Trainers commonly use the word “yes” for this purpose. Teaching your dog the meaning of the clicker/yes is the first step in your training program. Trainers refer to this step as “charging up the clicker” or “conditioning the dog to the reward marker.” Simply click the clicker/say yes one time, and give your dog a treat. Repeat several times and in several sessions. You are teaching your dog that a click/yes means that a treat is coming right away. Easy enough. Your dog doesn’t have to do anything at all at this point.
Long, Lorie (2007-05-01). The Siberian Husky (Terra Nova Series) (Kindle Locations 1682-1686). TFH Publications. Kindle Edition. The ability to communicate well with others ranks high as an important skill among canines. Most dogs catch on readily. When you click/yes, and your Siberian’s eyes instantly light up, his head swerves around, and he looks for the coming treat, you have successfully activated one of your most useful training tools. The chain of events for training behaviors is: 1.Get the dog to do the desired behavior. 2.Click/yes to indicate that he has performed the desired behavior. 3.Reward and release by saying “Okay,” the signal that the exercise is finished for now. 4.Add the signal or command word to the desired behavior. 5.After the dog makes the connection between the signal word and the behavior, use the signal word to get him to perform the desired behavior. 6.Generalize the behavior by asking the dog to perform it in many different places.

I don't get the whole "say Yes" thing. Bandit doesn't speak English. I could just the same say the word "toothpaste" in a really happy, upbeat tone and he'd still view it as praise.

You could indeed say 'toothpaste' if you wanted! The important thing is that there is one signal that is used to mark the behaviour, and is always followed by a treat. It acts as a bridge between the time the behaviour happens and the time you hand out the treat. It's really there just to mark the behaviour at the exact right time. Some people like a click because it is a different sound from speech and very recognizable. Other people prefer a 'yes' because then it still works whether you have the clicker or not, and you don't have to hold a clicker in your hand (can get tricky if you have the lead and a clicker and a bag of treats to manage). 'Toothpaste' wouldn't be ideal because it's a longer word, and perhaps less distinctive from other speech sounds, but it could still work. 'Yes' is nice and short and easily recognizable.

The click is shorter and more quick than -any- word we could say to a dog to mark a behavior. Even using "yes" a dog could be doing/thinking of something else by the time you actually get the word out. Click is also very distinguished from speech - you use the word "yes" quite a bit every day.
Bella responds more readily and excited when I use the clicker than with any form of formal praise (i.e. "yes", "good girl", "good", "yay" etc).

We used clicker training in the Petsmart classes and it is a favorite of the one trainer we use. It worked excellent to the point that when Onyx sees me pick up the clicker he immediately sits, waiting for his treat and his command. I highly recommend clicker training and will be using it on all my future pups.
