Female puppy humping??? Empty
PostSubject: Female puppy humping???   Female puppy humping??? EmptyTue May 14, 2013 11:10 pm

We have a 12 week old female Siberian and have had her for a month. She is doing really well as far as training goes, she does great in her crate at night and potty training is really progressing. She started humping our legs and back/shoulders if we are at her level.. It usually happens while playing with her, but she is not spayed yet. Is this normal behavior prior to spaying? Also, any tips on reducing biting?

Thank you!

It is a sign of dominance as Nathan mentioned. My female never tried it with a human - however she recently (last month or so) started humping her best friend (border collie that is same age as her - 7 months old). Don't let her do it to you and say firm "no".

I'm in the exact same position: 12-week old husky we've had for a month. When my parents' old beagle/Jack Russell mix was visiting this past week Layla humped her, the first time she had done something like that. My mom was watching her at the time and just separated the two dogs. It probably was a dominance thing. You just have to tell them no and get them off of you. Be consistent, and try to set them up so they don't get into situations where they can hump. If she starts on your leg, just keep walking or get up from where you're sitting and walk away. She'll get the hint.

Same goes for biting. If she play-bites you (whether she uses a "soft" mouth or a harder one) give a firm "no" and stop play immediately for 15 seconds or so. If she keeps doing it, you may need to stop play and walk away and put a barrier between yourself and the dog (a door, baby gate, etc.) for about 15 to 30 seconds. Puppies this age are naturally mouthy, and it will only get worse as they start to teethe, but after around one year it will get better. Read some of the other biting threads on this site and you will see it's totally normal behavior that will decrease when they are a little older.

Humping in adolescent dogs is different than in younger puppies. In a 12 week old, I would just ignore it and redirect her to another activity. My 8 month old male went through a really brief humping phase at that age, I just ignored it and redirected him to play or something else, he stopped pretty quickly (outgrew it). Now that he's an adolescent, he humps other dogs during play and that, I do correct. It's just not a habit I want him to get into, even if its relatively harmless. He's still in tact, so I don't allow humping of any kind.

Nicky started humping at about 9 weeks old and is still humping at a year and a half old. We sorta just laugh it off and call her a freak. She doesn't do it to us as much, but she makes poor Hayden her bitch haha. He just sits and takes it and then they go back to playing, I don't get it, I'm assuming like everyone else said its a dominance thing.

Two of mine hump other dogs, Kay is about two years old and Maya almost five. Maya only humps dogs that she really likes or sometimes a dog that Kay is going to hump, she does it for dominance. Kay humps dogs for dominance and play. They're both spayed too, lol.
