Ghost came home last night (late) for the first time! The breeder said that my son had picked the "troublemaker" of the pups! It was also the one that the breeder took to the most. Ghost ran to my son and sort of chose him though.

So last night I bathed him because he smelled of urine (and the smell is still there, but it is lighter now). He slept in the bed with my son. He cries and howls every time we leave him in a room without us or if we have to kennel him. There will be times when he needs to be kenneled for his safety when we are gone, etc.

A few questions: Is it bad to let them "cry it out" if they are howling, etc? Will he get used to our routine and learn fast that it's not permanent but temporary? Did anyone else have trouble with their Husky pup chewing up the puppy pads? We can't leave pads down because he destroys them! He has chew toys and does play with them. And also - he growled at my pug doesn't want nothing to do with him as of yet. But I'm hoping in time he will come around.

On a brighter note - he's adorable and my son loves him to pieces! I'm stressing though!!!!!

It's OK to let them cry it out for a while. Wait until he calms down and then go check on him; you don't want him to start thinking that when he cries, you come -- the opposite with human babies! Go slow with the crate. Have him in there for a few minutes at a time during the day and then slowly increase the time as he gets more comfortable.

We didn't use puppy pads, so I can't really help you there. Is there a reason you aren't training him to only go outside? I trained Layla early on to ring a bell I hung by the door to indicate she had to go outside. You train her to ring the bell first; then you pair it with opening the door and going outside. I just think it's easier to have them go outside to potty all the time so there's less risk of confusion later on. Just my opinion, though. If you're wedded to the pads, then sternly tell him "no" when you catch him in the act of chewing them, and try to redirect with one of his toys.

Keep an eye on the situation with the pug. He could just be unsure in his new living situation and will come around, or it could get worse if his fear is fed. Try to make his interactions with the pug positive. In fact, try to make all his interactions with people and other dogs positive. Since he's very young, you'll have to begin socializing him with lots of different types of people and dogs, but in a safe environment, as he's still not fully vaccinated yet.

There are lots of other threads around here about crate training, socialization, redirecting from chewing unwanted things, etc. Search around. Congrats on the new addition!

I'd also add with crate training that it will be much easier if he not sleep in bed with your son, as much as they both probably enjoy it. You can try putting the crate in his room at night for a little while until the pup is more comfortable in the crate.

Thank you for all the info! The crate is in my son's bedroom. Husky just howls and whines until he sounds hoarse. He keeps tipping his water bowl. We just thought the puppy pads were a good idea for in between his potty breaks outside. (my pug appreciates his puppy pads and will pee on them when he needs to - as he's still a pup and goes frequently.)

Hey there! Your new baby is adorable. Liz gave you some great advice. Personally, I always take something with me (her Kong, a bully stick, a chew, ect.) to put her in her crate, so she gets good stuff for going in there. Now, she loves it in there. I agree with Liz on the sleeping with your son as well, but that's a rule I never followed. I love my cuddle times! As far as pads go, they teach a dog that it's acceptable to go inside if its on something and not directly on the floor. Good luck with your baby!

Thank you Tyler!  I definitely need to get him a kong toy!  I know this sounds incredibly silly but I've never used one!  hahaa!  I will have to figure out what to get for it (as far as treats).  We had a much better afternoon than morning here.  Ghost finally tuckered out outside (we have a fenced in yard) he was dozing on the cool shaded concrete steps up to the porch.  He also fell asleep in my arms... he craves to be held always.  Or to be laying right in your lap or touching you when he lays beside you.  He hates being alone.  I wish I could give him attention 24/7 cause he's such a cute ball of fuzz!!!  I have a toddler that keeps me occupied of the morning!  Hopefully Ghost will learn our routines here and when he's vaccinated fully, I can walk him too!!!  He will love that!  He also had a few fleas so I got him some sentinel and capstar meds today!  We are on our way to getting him all situated and happy!!
