My husband got orders, we're moving to San Diego! Good news, we keep hearing it's awesome there. Bad news, it's a 32 hour drive away. We only had 3 weeks notice, so it's been a little crazy over here trying to find a new place and prepare, but now we have somewhere to go and all that's left is the going. I'm worried about our fur-babies on such a long trip, but moreso Ezio since Gimli has gone on long trips before (from PA to IL and back to visit). I hope we can keep him comfortable. I keep reading to get some sort of sedative from the vet, but the idea makes me uneasy.

Have you ever done any distance driving with your pup? Ours does great in a car. We're about to do a weeklong road trip with him and have no intentions of any sedative.

Koda and Rogue handle 12-20 hour car drives fine. We just stop at the rest stops about every 4 hours for all of to go to the bathroom and stretch our legs. All of our drives have started around 4-6pm so we take them to doggy daycare for 8 hours prior to th drive and the usually sleep the whole time. Both of mine got brought up going everywhere in the car though. We took Koda on car rides as a puppy to calm him down and Rogue was going on 1.5 hour trips to Denver since the day after we got her. But if your dogs do well in the car generally, I wouldn't worry too much.

Congrats on San Diego. My brother is a Navy Seal stationed there and loves it.

I just did a 22 hour drive from california to Denver. We did stop for nights but we did it. Maggie is very good in the car she sleeps most of the way. I would try to make your pup as comfortable as possible. I keep bones in the back seat for maggie. Congrats on San Diego! It is pretty there. I was born there my dad was stationed there. My husband was in the marines at camp pendleton 30 mins north. Got to love the military and the last min stuff!

We took Blaze on a 12 car ride with little problem we did make a few stops along the way. He also went with use up and back to get Kerian she was 4 hours away from where we live. you might take some benadryl but I won't use it unless it gets hard.. You will also need to find hotels along the way that will take pets. Bring lots of treats like bones and toys to keep him entertained. along the way. I would try and walk him before each day you start out to somewhat tired him out.

Congrats on orders, my boyfriend and I EAS'd from the Marine Corps this year. We were stationed in Camp Pendleton, CA and moved back to NH. A 3 day drive with a 2.5 month old puppy. We had got what the vet called "puppy Dramamine" from him but we didn't have to use it all. We just turned on the A/C and she was out like a light. Just make sure to take him out every stop, have water available and some toys. Ours did wonderful on the ride (we were in a U-Haul), hopefully yours will too!!

I would assume that he would do just fine. We did a pretty long drive last summer, Embry got car sick on the way home, but he's very anxious in the car but otherwise as long as you stop frequently he'll be okay.

Oh wow, 32 hrs! I just finished an 18 hr drive with Juneau. What type of car are you traveling in? We bought an EZYdog Harness from wag.com. $24. It has a seatbelt attachment. http://www.wag.com/dog/p/ezydog-quick-fit-harness-199160

Beware, he may chew your seatbelt. I would get a big comforter and wrap a part of it around the seatbelt so he can't get to it.

Also- bully sticks! They will soothe (most of) their chewing needs. bestbullysticks.com or Wag.com too.

We stopped about every 3-4 hrs (to gas up and let Juneau out).

I would NOT feed very much food. I fed about 1/2 or less of what I usually feed Juneau. She didn't get car sick!

Definitely have some water available. Juneau was 15 weeks when we traveled with her. I let her have as much water as she needed. She didn't whine at us to go potty or anything outside of our 3-4 hr timeline. http://www.wag.com/dog/p/jolly-pets-roadrefresher-green-104127 I used this. It helped keep the water from splashing out!

And now, the best invention ever... Pet Ease. http://www.petsupplies.com/item/nutri-vet-pet-ease-soft-chew/493187/ A natural way to make our furbabies sleepy. It has herbs and amino acids. Damn, I paid like $10 for my bag at Petsmart. Oh well... I gave Juneau 2 (it goes by weight- 1 per 10-20 pounds) every 5-7 hrs, depending on her behavior. Don't go over 10 in one day though. It takes about a 1/2 hour or so to kick in. It keeps them from being stressed. It also helped her sleep! She slept about 80-90% of the way. It made the trip that much more bearable. She liked the taste too! It was like a treat.

I would take a few drives around town with the harness so he is used to it. Juneau didn't like it for 2 wks and she definitely let me know (by howling in my ears while driving!).

Good luck and drive safe!

32 hour drive?! Resampled_2012-08-08_13-01-54_517 Juneau passed out in our Camaro. lol
