When to switch to adult food?? Empty
PostSubject: When to switch to adult food??   When to switch to adult food?? EmptyWed Aug 15, 2012 3:12 pm

Hi all,
we are pushing 9 months with our not-so-little little furbaby!

I was wondering when is a good time to switch to adult food? Some say at a year some say for high energy breeds (ie huskies) wait longer?

Any advice???

Thanks!

Most people say 1 year....others use all life stages food and don't really buy into the puppy vs adult food. What type of food are you currently using?

My guy is also almost 9 months and I have heard to switch them around a year, others have said they never used puppy food.

I feed Nikko Wellness for puppy, and that is what I am switching Yukon too (breeder had him on puppy chow :-/) My plan is to switch them both over to Taste of the Wild in 2-3 months. Nikko will be about a year, and Yukon will be about 5 months old. I don't like the idea of having them on different foods, and I have heard TOTW is fine for puppies too.

I've always heard approx. a year although I have also read that when your puppy stops showing interest in their food can also be a sign (reason I had to switch Cally over)

Just as an add to that, Cally was around 6 months when we switched and she seems to be doing fine on it Smile

Tama is on Blue Buffalo wilderness puppy kibble. His breeder had him on a grain based kibble before prob because it was cheaper. But we have had great success with BB. His coat changed and his shedding (mind u it was the dead of winter) was so much better.

We would probably stay with BB unless there are other recommendations? He is NOT a fussy eater... Actually it is probably his favorite parts of the day! We though about the Raw diet but from what I have priced it is more expensive.

Tamasmum, I fed Cato WIlderness Adult since I got him and Acana all life stages, until we switched to raw - Claudia helped me out with this, as I was nervous at first, but it appears that the calcium/phosphorous ratio is perfectly fine for huskies and so is the protein content.

Blue Wilderness is a great food. 5 starts and grain free. I alternated between Duck and Salmon, the dogs loved it.

hahaha well thank you. Smile

I switched to raw because after lots of research, I found it to be the best for my dog and any dog I should ever have, since dogs share 99.8% of their genetic make up with wolves.

It's cheaper than Blue for me. But you have to find co ops in your area to keep cost down.

Blue Wilderness is a good food. I feed Orijen to my huskies. I'd personally go with Orijen, Acana or Fromm over Blue, but it is a good food, too.

As with dry food, there are a lot of options for raw and a wide range of prices for raw foods (depends on type of meat, type of food, etc)
