I have been told that my dog is a seppala siberian sleddog which falls away from the siberian husky breed standard and she looks like one to me but I just want to see what you guys think. (if I coud figure out how to post a picture!)

To post a photo, see the little icon above where you reply with the tree? The one with the tree and floppy disk allows you to upload directly from your computer.

Seppalas are not very common in general and I would definitely find it unlikely for her to be one. I think a husky mixed with a white German Shepard could easily end up closely looking like a seppala as well as other various mixes, and just like with Alaskan huskies, a lot of photos of seppalas accidentally have photos of Siberian huskies.

I have had her DNA tested and it said pure husky, I personally don't see any german shepherd in her but I do agree with you that a husky white swiss shepherd mix gives a seppy look. I know its rare but I have had a few Seppala breeders say that they think thats what she is, I just want to see what you guys think. Thanks for the help!

Can't see the link. Your privacy setting is probably not letting people see it.

Chreiber, go to that link you posted and instead of copy and pasting the URL from your web bar, put your mouse over the photo, right click, and select "copy image URL" and then paste it here.

I'd also bet the seppala breeders are actually not seppala breeders- well, most anyway. Probably someone trying to get a bigger buck from a husky or husky mix.

The one on the left? I think he just has a snout that is a little off from what the breed standard desires, but you meet a lot of huskies that have snouts that are not sloped right and whatnot.

But if they were a seppala, I don't think it'd show up on a DNA test at all since it's not considered a real breed.

I already asked the DNA company about what a seppala would come up as and they said a siberian husky since it is just a working line husky

That's 100% husky. No doubt. I don't know why anyone would even think its a seppala, I don't see any of the features that distinguish a seppala from a Siberian husky.

You just have to add [img] in front and [ /img] to the back without the space between the [ and / (if I add the space now, the whole thing will just show up as a red x in a box.)

On my iPad so I can't copy a photo from a kennel, so wiki will have to do... I'd say your husky/Shepard would be a lot more likely to be mistaken for a seppala than the one in the middle. Their snouts are different and their bodies are more lanky, longer bodies, longer legs....

I do not think there is anyway to tell if a siberian is a so called "seppala" husky just from its appearance. I think that line was bred more so for their working skills and not conformation, so they could look quite different. You just have to decide whether to trust the breeder or not, but I do think the whole official seppala breeding program was shut down a while ago due to not many people being interested in it.

But note that pretty much all (actually probabaly all) siberians today have ancestors that were owned at one point by Seppala in the past.

A seppala is a siberian husky lol. It is a siberian husky that comes from the original 10 dogs owned by leonard seppala. The only difference is they have never been bred to show only to work. That is why you see them with less fur and a leggier dog. My dog was found near a seppala breeder that was shut down because of puppy mill type breeding. here is a seppala: http://douwil7.100webspace.net/g1992_files/image006.jpg

I know they are siberian huskies. Sorry I guess I worded my comment wrong. I know they are siberians that were only bred for racing and not show. My thing with them is a lot of them don't look anything like the old pictures of the dogs Seppala owned. They are a lot more racy looking now and it makes sense cause back them long distance and endurance was key and racing nowadays is just speed and not so much endurance, hence alaskan huskies winning most everything.

I get a seppala is a Siberian husky, but present day there are features that distinguish different from "normal Siberian huskies" slightly and she has none of these features. I think the general consensious is she is a regular ole husky. If the breeder thinks she looks like one, she must think all Siberian huskies are seppalas. But like Sara said, in the gene pool immsure seppala is floating all around, and they are just purely working huskies. A siberian husky is a siberian husky.

O i know! I was writing that to heather. I just can't see why someone who actually breeds seppalas would say she looks like she is one when it doesn't benefit them at all to say it.

She is much more leggy than most huskies when standing next to them, she is quite a bit faster, has shorter fur, has taller ears and a saddleback all these are common in seppalas. The person who told me she looks like she has seppala lines is one of the largest breeders in the united states so I would assume she doesn't think all siberians are seppalas. There are tons of seppalas that look a lot like my dog.

Why ask what others think and then just defuse their opinions? If you are set on the breeder's opinion then there is no point debating it. You asked for my opinion and I have tried to be as insightful as I can be with my answers.

I am speaking facts, not just making my opinion up out of the air and I never insinuated that they were a different breed entirely from a Siberian husky, just that they have specific features that that type of Siberian husky differs from that I do not see in your dog. Plenty of the dogs here are taller and have big ears, among other things you named, and still are plain boring huskies. Also, you pretty much said she is being called 100% seppala Siberian in your first post, not that she just has some seppala lineage in her (which is very vague on how much).

Like I said, you seem quite set on her being a seppala so I will not waste my time any further pointing why I think otherwise anymore because all you are doing is rebutting and getting defensive when I have just been giving you answers to your question.

Your right I am sorry for doing that I don't blame you for being annoyed of my responses. I get asked if she is a husky shepherd sometimes and I guess I was kind of curious as to if people thought that when i was posting this originally. I do believe she is a seppala but either way it doesn't matter. I appreciate your time and I am sorry for getting defensive over it.

"looks" is different than "is"

My pup, Cato has Togo in his lines - simply because they were the original imports. The majority of dogs will. IMO, There are too many blurred lines in the racing world and show world - Your dog is a Siberian, that's for sure. Unless you do a DNA test with blood from true Seppala lines, you will probably never know.

IMO, legginess and shorter fur occur in many Siberians today - show quality is different and they tend to be much fluffier. Even in my two dogs I can see a difference - Delilah is very leggy and shorter in coat - Cato, a dog from Karnovanda, is very fluffy with dense fur and a sturdy body. I'm sure Delilah has some Seppala in there, but I wouldn't consider her a working dog.

I don't know if you can tell from the pic in my signature - but Cato is SUPER FLUFFY and stockier - Delilah is medium coat with Long legs.
