1. Here we prefer clarity to agreement. Obviously not everyone is going to agree on a topic; here we prefer to talk out our differences in a respectful manner to ensure mutual understanding and respect.
2. Read the Stickies and Announcements. Each sub-forum may have specific rules which trump the Forum Rules in cases where there may be conflicting information. Read the rules of each board before you post so that you are clear on the expectations of the staff.
3. Respect ALL Staff and Admins. These people volunteer of their time and MUST be respected as well as their word adhered to. They are responsible for maintaining a free, open, clear and organized forum. Anyone found to be openly undermining any official ruling by a staff member will be warned.
4. Signatures: One picture only and no links. Images: To keep the forum looking neat and tidy, we ask that members insert just one picture only in their signatures. The picture should be no more than 200x500 pixels and should be of an appropriate subject, for example, your dogs and their names. Should you need assistance creating an appropriate signature, please PM an Admin and we would be happy to help! This is to ensure that signatures remain a welcome addition to our forum instead of a cumbersome distraction. Links: Hyperlinks in signatures--unless to a personal blog or photo stream of your dogs (like Flckr or Piscasa, for example)--are strictly prohibited. Please PM a staff member with any questions or concerns regarding this rule.

6 months of husky ownership! Empty
PostSubject: 6 months of husky ownership!   6 months of husky ownership! EmptyTue Jul 31, 2012 10:02 pm

Seems like much longer (which is a good thing when time seems to go by slower in my opinion!) but I just realized I've had massak for 6 months now. He is such an awesome doggy in so many ways and I have learned a lot about dog ownership and especially huskies! I know our limits and his traits and how to manage them. I am lacking in the training dept. which would probably make him even better, but that is on me till I start to make it happen. My life does almost revolve around trying to keep him well exercised and around me and other dogs if possible, but he lacks some training with the word "come". I have a friend with a full on sibe and he can get his dog to stop for chasing a deer because he is such a training geek. Sure he may stay around me and always comes back trying to find me, but if I can't get my dog to come when I call it to *everytime*, not just most, i need to work harder maybe.

what i have learned could fill a small magazine. Some specifics to him in particular would be...
If I am on a time schedule and take him out for a hike, he is gonna be on a leash. If I have the extra 15, 20, 30 minutes to kill and wait for him to come back if he sees something to chase, then I will indulge him in his freedom. (One time it was longer that i hadn't seen him and i was getting worries, but he was waiting back at the car) It is not cool to let him out of the house where I am at now because there are lots of other houses with vacationers around, trash, a swimming pool, and people with dogs on leashes, etc etc. In town, he will never be off a leash, because there is too much action, and cars. If it's just hiking, skiing, biking on trails, or wandering around the forests aimlessly, he is allowed to go run, which is such an amazing site to see when he is playing chase with other dogs! He can run like a banshee in the craziest terrain! My friends and I usually say the same thing..."wow, did you see that?!" Too bad he loves water so darn much because he will jump in anything liquid no matter how nasty and muddy! So I have to deal with him being wet more often than not, so must plan for that possibility accordingly. Funny however, one time when I was swimming in a swimming hole, he just sat on the edge barking at me and didn't jump in?!
Of course there are a ton of other things I have learned, but i have come to find out those are well documented 'husky things', so won't repeat them!

One thing is for sure, huskies are certified nut cases! But mostly awesome Smile
